Wish I lived closer to Olympia! Visitors to the state Governor’s Mansion during Women’s History Month in March will have the option of choosing a special “Women in the Mansion” tour. During special tours on March 15th and 22nd at 1:00pm, volunteer docents will talk about women who have influenced Washington’s history from inside the mansion. The standard mansion tours will also be available. For more information, click to www.tours.des.wa.gov or call the tour office at 360-902-8880. What a neat opportunity; I sure with I lived closer to Olympia.

Remember a while back I asked for folks to send to me a list of museums in their area/city/town? Two wonderful people responded, Bonnie Moore from Yakima and Jim Bull from the Columbia Gorge Gen Society. Jim sent the list he uses in their society; Bonnie sent me the copied page from the Yellow Pages.

Here is the point I’m making and working to resolve….. with your help. If you Google “museums in Washington state” a nice list will be shown courtesy of Wikipedia. Comparing the Wikipedia list to the phone book page that Bonnie sent, there were three museums listed for the Yakima area in those Yellow Pages that were NOT on the Wikipedia list.

The Wikipedia list can be amended and updated and I will learn how and be happy to do that. But I need input from YOU all. I need your society lists or Yellow Pages lists to compare with what’s already included in that Wikipedia listing.

So once again I’m asking for the lists (and contact info like website, address and phone) of the museums and perhaps historical societies in your town or area. Scan and send the Yellow Book pages would be dandy fine. I shall keep you posted on the progress.

As long as we’re on the subject of museums, this came from the blog UpFront with NGS on January 6th. “The George Eastman Museum, among the oldest archives of photography in the world, recently launched an online platform that allows you to search through over 250,000 objects from its collections. Aside from the thousands of photographs that date back to the medium’s earliest years, the digital archive also features objects form its massive library of artifacts that together chronicle the history of image-making.

In case the name doesn’t ring a bell, this is George Eastman of the Eastman Kodak Company, headquartered in Rochester, NY, and the leader of the camera-film industry for decades.

Under the website heading of “Photography” you’ll learn that the oldest photos date to the introduction of the medium n 1839 (1839!!!) to the present. Might there be a photo of interest to you within this collection?

Had to share this with you from Janet Margolis Damm who lives in Pullman, Washington. She and hubby recently vacationed in Costa Rica and she wrote that “I couldn’t believe my eyes when I spotted this sign…do you think it means what I think it means? Or was it a botanical tour?”

Either way, it would be interesting. And if it does pertain to genealogy, then it proves once again that folks from anywhere and all over the world are becoming interested in learning about their roots. Thanks, Janet.

According to Parade magazine last Sunday (19 Feb 2017) the favorite comfort food for Washingtonians is Cedar-Plank Salmon. This article was a fun, fun read! Continuing to read after our state: West Virginia’s is Pepperoni Roll. Wisconsin’s food is Deep-Fried Cheese Curds. Wyoming’s is Bison Meatloaf.  If you Google “What America Eats Comfort Food from Coast to Coast,” you will find out your state’s favorite comfort food.
