BOOK EXCHANGE

The SGS Library has begun exchanging books and periodical issues with other genealogy libraries around the country.

Thus far, through this exchange, we have added 7 new books (conservatively valued at over $280) to our collection which bolstered our holdings for counties in Virginia and West Virginia. In return, we have either reimbursed the sender for postage, or exchanged some of SGS’ publications with them.

When the SGS Library offered our publications to other libraries, we received requests from seven other genealogical libraries. The response has been very positive.

One librarian checked her own family names in Edmond S Meany’s Living Pioneers of Washington, published by SGS in 1995, and found two family members with full articles, including the date their wagon train left Illinois, and a third relative is mentioned. She hopes to visit SGS in January 2019 when the American Library Association meets in Seattle.

This book exchange is an excellent way to raise our profile within the genealogy community!

GOT ACADIANS OR CAJUNS IN YOUR FAMILY TREE?

The SGS Library has a new section devoted to Acadia. The colony of New France in northeastern North America was known as Acadia. This includes areas of Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Maine. Acadians who resettled in Louisiana came to be known as Cajuns. You can find this new section under Canada (CAND/AC/) in the library, but for a while check for items for Acadia on the new acquisitions shelf.

SGS NEEDS 20 to 30 VOLUNTEERS for the 2017
PACIFIC NORTHWEST SCOTTISH HIGHLAND GAMES
Saturday, July 29 & Sunday, July 30
Enumclaw Expo Center

– COME LISTEN TO THE BAGPIPES – WATCH THE DANCERS –
– VISIT THE CLANS – HELP SGS PROMOTE GENEALOGY –

We need volunteers to help at the Seattle Genealogical Society and Library booth during the Pacific Northwest Scottish Highland Games in Enumclaw. We have been participating for many years and it is a great way to let the public know about SGS and to promote membership. Our participation also gives us valuable community outreach credit for our grant applications with 4Culture which has resulted in thousands of dollars for our equipment and projects. Game attendance is about 30,000 for the weekend. Most of the people who come to the SGS booth don’t have an understanding of their Scottish or Irish heritage and have not done any research. They primarily want to know two things:

1. “What clan do I belong to?”

2. “What tartan can I use?”

We will have a number of reference books available at the booth that help answer those questions. You will receive an e-mail attachment prior to the games that will give you a refresher course on Scottish and Celtic genealogy.

We need twenty volunteers for each day; two volunteers for each two hour session and three people during the peak afternoon hours.

Unfortunately, this year SGS is not able to fully fund the entry tickets to the games for our volunteers. However we will be able to get a substantial early booking discount as long as I can purchase E- tickets online by June 28th. If you are able, a suggested reimbursement to me at the games of $10.00 would be appreciated. The games are a lot of fun. Parking will be at your own expense at $7.00 per day. We encourage carpooling.

Please contact me, Jean Roth, before June 25th to confirm that you can or cannot help. Send along your name, email address, phone contact, age if you are over 62 and a day and time preference, if you have one.

Thanks so much.

TIP OF THE WEEK –
DNA TESTS ON SALE FOR FATHER’S DAY

For the next few days all the major DNA test players (Family Tree DNA, Ancestry DNA, 23andMe) are offering Father’s Day promotions of $20 off the regular price of their autosomal DNA tests. Family Tree DNA is also offering $30 off the Y-DNA test for males. If you are in the market for a DNA test, now may be a good time.

If you need help deciding which testing company is the right choice for you, The Legal Genealogist wrote a very good article, “2015: Most Bang for the DNA Buck”, that might help you decide. Here’s the link:
