Also, if you missed your free copy of our monthly Insider for August 2017, you’re in luck because we saved you a copy HERE. NOTE: The Insider issues are now located under the “Learn” > “Our Publications” menu at our new website (still gfo.org).
Curious about the status of your GFO Membership?? We’d love to have you as a GFO Member!

Can’t find the thumb drive or USB slot!!??

We’ve recently purchased USB extension cables for our computers at the GFO Library.

They are black and easily snake their way out from behind the back of most of our new white computer monitors in the library’s research area.
No more standing on your head to get your USB or thumb drive plugged in. Yay!

Announcement from the GFO’s German Special Interest Group

The German Group has taken on a project.

The gauntlet has been thrown down and the German Interest Group is picking it up! Harold Hinds Jr. has found three specific German research book sets, including one that is going out of print.

The German Special Interest Group (SIG) has decided to take on the challenge of raising the funds to purchase the following book sets outside of the regular GFO budget and is looking for additional donors.

We would love to have your participation in the endeavor. Any donations for this project should be designated to the German Books Fundraiser. Donors will also be given the necessary tax deduction forms.
The book sets include:
1. German Immigrants in American Church Records. There are a couple volumes that are no longer available, but due to Harold’s generosity, he has secured the rest of the set at his own expense and the German SIG has pledged to reimburse him once the moneys for this are raised.
2. Map Guides for Swiss Parish Registers. We’ve already had another donor step up to order all available volumes (and THEY JUST ARRIVED TODAY at the library). This donor’s generosity has allowed us to pre-order the rest of the set.
3. Alphabetical and Reverse German Place Names Indexes. This is a 21 volume set, and another outstanding donor has donated four volumes to get us started.
With the above-noted donations, we’ve raised almost $900 of our original $1,800 goal! Click HERE to contribute.

Thank you all in advance! Most sincerely, Tia Cobb and Mike Fernandez

GFO Audio Tapes can be checked out by members! But did you also know we have syllabi to go with the tapes?

If a GFO member wants to check out one of the audio tapes, they should know that we probably (not always, but most likely) have the class handout to go with the tape.
Here’s how to find the class handout and/or syllabi for your audio tapes at the GFO.
1. Examine the tape to see what conference it was from or look it up in the catalog,
2. Check the catalog to find out if we have the conference syllabus, and
3. Go to the shelf to pull the material and make a copy of the handout.

Example: Massachusetts Church Records
Here’s the catalog listing for the Massachusetts Church Records tape:

From the online GFO catalog record, you can see this is an audio tape by the picture of the red and black cassette tape that pops up.

The online GFO catalog record also shows you who the “Publisher” of the event was. In the example shown above, the event was hosted by the New England Historic Genealogical Society in 1995.
Next, you can…

Search the GFO’s online catalog for “New England Historic Genealogical Society 1995” to find this listing:

Ask one of our Research Assistants to help you find the book so you can make copies of the appropriate handout and/or syllabus to correspond with the cool audio tape before you check it out to listen to at home!

Hot Links in Genealogy…

There’s DNA in the parchment!

Publications in both New Scientist and Archaeology journals are raving about how scientists and historians are using DNA remnants from medieval parchment paper to make some pretty amazing discoveries! Read both articles HERE.
Speaker change for the Bellevue Genealogical Event next month.

The Jewish Genealogical Society of Washington State are very sorry to report that their speaker, Marcia Fine, for their free genealogy event in Bellevue on Monday evening, Sept 11th, has had a family emergency and will be postponed until later this winter or next spring.

Please continue to check HERE for news on their replacement speaker and topic in the next week or so.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 26th

DNA Beginners Group 9am – noon

Group leader Emily Aulicino will discuss a few ways to organize your DNA matches and segments. Bring your ideas and join the conversation. Most of the time will be spent in a group discussion about individual questions and DNA problems with the intent of having other group members offer their suggestions. This process will help everyone learn from each other! If you have a particular item you would like to raise, you may also email Emily directly at: aulicino@hevanet.com before Thursday, August 24th.

Please bring a copy of the handout and evaluation form. DNA Kits and her book will be available.
SUNDAY, AUGUST 27th

Library Work Party 9am – noon

There’s another work party at the GFO library today for those of you who can come. There’€™s lots to do and we’€™d love to have your help. Doors open at 9 and work usually wraps up around noon. Some people come for just an hour or so and you’€™re welcome to do the same. Any time you can share is valuable. Hope to see you there.
