Our GFO Stars this month are all those involved in the German Special Interest Group, including Mike Fernandez  and Tia Cobb.

CORRECTION: The German SIG co-leaders Mike Fernandez and Tia Cobb implemented a German Book Fund Drive in August 2017 to purchase a series of German books for the GFO Library.

Their original goal was $1,100. Members of the German SIG and other GFO members quickly stepped up to the plate, donating cash and several of the desired books. The three series were:

German Immigrants in American Church Records – purchased 10 volumes, 4 volumes donated, and there is money to purchase additional volumes that are being published;
Alphabetical and Reverse German Place Names – Library already had 2 volumes, 14 volumes purchased, 4 volumes donated;
Map Guides to Swiss Parish Records – Intended to buy 5 volumes, but an additional 20 were donated by Judith Leppert, thus completing the set.

Their Book Drive goal was exceeded in only 1 and 1/2 months! Excess funds have been set aside to purchase additional books in the series when published.

THANK YOU, MIKE AND TIA!

SATURDAY, January 6th

Virginia Group 10am – noon

To begin the new year we will work to develop a finely tuned research plan. How often do we start researching without a specific goal in mine and surface hours later after going down the rabbit hole with random bits of info that don’t necessarily serve to further our goals? With a well thought out research plan to follow you will be more likely to find sources, evidence, and documents that will help to break down those brick walls. Come prepared with specific questions you need to be answered and a review of what you already know. We will work together to come up with a plan to reach our goals. For more info, please contact Judi Scott judiscot@gmail.com and/or Carol Surrency lcsurr@gmail.com.

German Group 1 – 3pm

Speaker: Daphne Garrison
Topic: Making a genealogy webpage

If you have written any family stories/histories over the past two months, bring them in to share. Danke. The German Interest Group was formed in the spring of 2011. It is intended to be a source of information and inspiration for anyone with German speaking ancestors. One goal is to provide information on a variety of topics related to Germanic history and migration. We also will provide time for members to share their research journeys and connect with others who may be researching the same region or time period.
