Golden State Killer

Questions of public information ethics arise.

As the news of the Golden State Killer spread this last week, DNA experts, the public, and many genealogical enthusiasts rallied to ask about the implications this case’s evidence poses for public and governmental access to DNA records.

Read what DNA Geek has to say HERE on the matter as it unfolds.

More Book Reviewers Needed…

Flying Books

Catch ’em before they all fly off the shelves!

GFO has an agreement with a few genealogy book publishers. In exchange for providing us with free books, we agree to provide them with book reviews. Recently, the donated books have begun to pile up. Please help us get caught up (and stay caught up) on this project that benefits the GFO library. You just might find the most amazing book in the process!

1. Boyle, Joseph Lee. “Our Troops Are in General Almost Naked.” The Delaware and New York Infantry at the Valley Forge 1777-1778.
2. Dobson, David. The People of Fife 1600-1799.
3. Dobson, David. The Scottish Jacobites of 1715 and the Jacobite Diaspora.
4. Dobson, David. Scottish Trade with Colonial Charleston 1683-1783.
5. Dunn, Richard, Editor. Warwick County, Virginia. Court Records in Transcription 1782-1843.
6. Mills, Elizabeth Shown, and Ellie Lennon. Natchitoches Colonials. A Sources Book: Censuses, Military Rolls and Tax Lists 1722-1803.

If you can help, please contact Joan Galles at bookreviews@gfo.org, or call her on Fridays at the GFO, 503-963-1932.

Housekeeping Request for Assistance

library stacks image

Our Facilities Manager and Wednesday morning Research Assistant is taking some time off this summer to work on other projects.

Do you know what he does while at GFO? He takes out the trash and recycling items, sweeps the floors, dusts the overhead pipes, and lots of other housekeeping jobs.

We need someone to take over some of these duties in his absence. Can you help?

Email volunteer@gfo.org to lend a hand!

SATURDAY, May 5

Virginia Group 10:00am – noon

Topic: Virginia Genealogy Trivia Quiz

Come to our meeting and test your knowledge of Virginia history and research and see how much you know and where there are gaps in your knowledge. We will have a list of questions taken from past meeting presentations. Then we will devote the remainder of our time for sharing and give everyone a chance to talk about their research problems, to ask questions, to share a new discovery, or a research technique or record group.

German Group 1 – 3pm

Presenters: Judith Leppert and Tia Cobb, on Lutheran Religion

The German Interest Group was formed in the spring of 2011. It is intended to be a source of information and inspiration for anyone with German speaking ancestors. One goal is to provide information on a variety of topics related to Germanic history and migration. We also will provide time for members to share their research journeys and connect with others who may be researching the same region or time period.
