It’s June! The month announcing summer, my mother’s name and, the name of a particular green beetle. Is there really such a critter?
Well yes there is:
Cotinis nitida, commonly known as the green June beetle, June bug or June beetle, is a beetle of the family Scarabaeidae. It is found in the eastern United States, where it is most abundant in the South.
I’ve never seen one but I know my Dad called my Mom his “June bug.”
Interesting that they are green! I quickly Googled it to see pictures of them – green. I’m from Texas and we saw them ALL THE TIME in the summer – they sort of dive-bombed us as we went in or out of a door with a light near it! However, as I wondered about the color, I looked to the right and saw a more familiar pic – a gold one. Now, after all these years, I discover those are MAY beetles! I’m sure they are related, but I guess we all had their name wrong!
