TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER! YOUR GERMAN ONE THIS TIME PLEASE…ALSO, DO YOU HAVE THOSE SPECIAL BOOKS ON GERMAN MAP PARISH GUIDES?? Firstly…
The GFO’s German Interest Group is in need of a brave new soul to lead this flock of researching fans! Won’t you help? Are you ready for the challenge? We think you definitely are!

If destiny’s calling, please give the library a call at 503-963-1932 or email volunteer@gfo.org to help out in this very vital way!

Visit the German Interest Group website for a peek at what they’ve been up to, and what we’ll all be missing with the upcoming retirement of their fearless leader, Nanci Remington, after Saturday, June 4, 2016.

Secondly…
This Saturday’s German Group session will feature information regarding how to use, and the immense value of, the book series the Map Guide to German Parish Registers. Right now the GFO only has eight of this 55-volume series.

Stay tuned for upcoming fundraiser information to help solve this catastrophe! (Okay, it’s not as bad as all that, but it could be better! We could be offering better service to you and your researching loved ones. So, yes, stay tuned.)

Don’t forget the upcoming Oral Histories Class! June 5th

Jewish3

Family history is often about gathering oral histories and stories from family members, and the Jewish Genealogical Society of Oregon is here to help!
Description: The Oral History Project is a key part of the OJMCHE’s mission to preserve and present the history of Oregon’s Jewish community The central goal is to develop a community oral history archive that provides a chronicle of the experiences of the Jews of Oregon. The project began by documenting the lives of the former residents of South Portland in the 1970s. Efforts have also included the testimonies of Holocaust survivors and liberators of death camps. Several focused efforts are currently underway to collect multiple histories from within particular geographic or communal areas throughout the state.

Bio: Anne LeVant Prahl, the Curator of Collections at the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education, has been working in collections management since 1987. She began doing oral history by interviewing former members of Texas’ Black gospel quartets for the Texas Music Museum as part of her masters work in anthropology at the University of Texas. In Oregon, as part of her position of curator, she runs the oral history program for the museum, training interviewers, identifying interview subjects, and maintaining the collection of nearly 700 oral histories.

The meeting starts at 11 AM, June 5th.

SPECIAL VENUE
Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education
1953 NW Kearney St.
Portland OR 97209
Phone: 503.226.3600

There is no cost for this program. A donation to the JGSO or OJMCHE would be appreciated.

What’s Happening this Week at the GFO?

SATURDAY, JUNE 4th
Virginia Group 10am – noon

Research in Virginia can be difficult, with the complication of “burned counties”, as well as the ordinary difficulties of using historical documents. But it is not impossible. We discuss the history of Virginia and explore various methods to do sound genealogy research. We hope to foster collaboration among our many Virginia researchers and work on our varied research problems, our “brick walls”, together.

Questions? Comments? Ask/Tell our facilitators: Judi Scott at judiscot@gmail.com and Carol Surrency at lcsurr@gmail.com.

German Group (Monthly Program) 1pm – 3pm

We will be looking at a question sent by Carole Linneman about her Germans from Osnabruck. She is most interested in finding if there is a relationship between her relative Raymond Linneman and the John (Gerhard) Linneman–also from Osnabruck–who settled in Gresham.

We will also take a look at the book series Map Guides to German Parish Registers. Stay tuned for a fundraiser announcement to help the GFO achieve its dream of being able to purchase copies of the complete set! Come learn at the German Group just how valuable this particular resource is.

Note from this group’s facilitor: “I’m still looking for a few good people to step up to help facilitate the German group beginning in September. I have loved doing this for the last five years, but need to focus my time elsewhere, so this will be my last meeting. Please let me know if you can help plan for the coming year.”
SUNDAY, JUNE 5th

All are welcome, from beginners to more advanced users. Come and learn and share your ideas and questions. Taught by the lovely and wonderful Sarah Holmes.
