Topic:  “Using WIKIs in Germanic Genealogical Research”  – Come learn what is a WIKI, how WIKIs can help your research and see demos of Germanic research completed on various WIKI sites.  I was surprised by what I learned and you may be, too.

Presenter:  Dorothy Pretare started collecting family history in 1995 and joined EGS in 2000.  She has been their Publicity Chairperson since 2007 and is an active member in three of their SIGs, including the leader of the German Interest Group.   Dorothy is also a member of South King County Genealogical Society, Seattle Genealogical Society DNA Group, Germanic Genealogy Society in MN and Polish Genealogical Society of MN.  In 2008, she visited her ancestral villages in old East Germany and present day Poland.

Topic:  “What’s Your Family’s Story?”  – “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.”  Maya Angelou.  Three of the many ways in which to capture your family’s history will be addressed: 1) Family Medical History, 2) Legacy Statements and 3) Family Biographical Stories.  Utilizing the facts that genealogists research, information can be presented in a way that descendants will want to read or see more about their ancestors lives versus dust covering their copy of your ancestral pedigree charts.  Bringing these stories of our ancestors to life will benefit future generations.

Presenter:  Paula R. Seeger. Paula is an ESG member and will share information she’s gathered over the years of research, interviewing and writing her family history and working with others to capture their story by voice recording, video recording, slide shows, biographies, family history memoires as well as interviewing nursing home residents and writing the text for a book of their legacy statements.

“Newspaper Research: What’s Available and How to Find Scanned Images”: Newspaper research can provide clues to birthplaces, keys to finding relatives and adding local flavor to our ancestor’s lives. Finding the newspaper in the area of research and during a specific time frame can be challenging. Three web sites will be shared to help discover the names of the newspapers available, the time frames they were published and major sources of online images.  This includes all English newspapers as well as foreign language newspapers, including German, available in America, plus a world map of historical newspapers.

Speaker: Janet O’Conor Camarata, as a genealogist, has researched her own family history for over 25 years. She is a seminar presenter and trainer in a variety of genealogy subjects to societies and libraries across Washington; a newsletter editor of the Kittitas County Genealogy Society (KCGS); a publicity chairman and past-president of South King County Genealogical Society (SKCGS).   She is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists and is a graduate of the University of Washington Genealogy and Family History program

Topic:  “Meyers Orts” has been the classic reference source for information about German cities, defining government, court, military and religious jurisdictions. As a result, Meyers has been a valuable tool for genealogists in locating offices which might hold important documents. Originally published in fraktur German, use of the gazetteer was a true challenge to non-German speakers. We’ll explore the history of Meyers Orts and follow its development from old book volumes to today’s easily accessed English internet sites.

Speaker:  Ken Passé has been doing genealogy research for more than 20 years and has been fortunate to have visited his ancestral village in Germany several times. A self-professed maritime guy/waterfront rat, he has extended his research to touch upon shipboard travel from Europe to America.
