Come join us for our free monthly meeting program. Mary Kircher Roddy will discuss what you’ll find in city directories, where and how to locate them. These directories contain information to help fill in the gaps in your ancestors’ lives — occupation, residence, work address, the community they lived in and how to find families.

Puget Sound Genealogical Society is having their bi-annual seminar “A Day of Discovery” on Saturday, September 24, at the Poulsbo Community Church on Saturday, September 24th from 8:30am to 3:30pm. The featured presenter is Thomas MacEntee, a well-known and popular speaker from Chicago, Illinois. He will be presenting four topics: Internet Archive: A Gold Mine for Genealogists; Managing the Genealogy Data Monster; Mapping Your Genealogy: From A to Z and In-Between; and Successful Collateral and Cluster Searching. The registration fee is $40.00 for PSGS members and $45.00 for non-members. The late registration fee after September 15th is an additional $5.00. Registration fee includes a light lunch, morning and afternoon snacks and a chance to win one of more than 20 genealogy-related door prizes. There will also be a raffle of more than $500 of technology-related items. Tickets are only $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. Jim Johnson will also bring lots of research goodies from the Heritage Quest Research Library’s Bookstore. Since 2003, the Washington State Genealogical Society has recognized more than 400 outstanding volunteers, nominated by their local society or genealogical organization for their service and dedication. These volunteers are the backbone of their local society, giving their time and expertise, to the organization and the field of genealogy. In the last of this series, you will be introduced to each of the 2014 award recipients and learn why they received the 2014 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award.
Today we’re introducing Jean Joal Drane Yager of Bremerton, Washington who was nominated by the Puget Sound Genealogical Society (PSGS). She was recognized for her outstanding leadership and consistent support of the goals and operation of the PSGS.

Since joining PSGS in 2008, Ms. Yager has been active in all aspects of the society. While serving in her first leadership position as chair of the education committee, she was instrumental in developing, organizing and teaching on-going classes for members and the public. During her tenure as President from 2012 – 2014, PSGS entered into a partnership with the Kitsap Regional Library. Ms. Yager was a key player during that time of transition and her “can do” attitude and endless energy ensured success.
In addition to being the 2014 Immediate Past President, Ms. Yager was also chair of the education committee, 2014 seminar committee and the PSGS field trip organizer.
Ms. Yager has been a dedicated member of the PSGS and her constant efforts to support the goals of the society are invaluable. As a result, she richly deserved this recognition.

Today we’re introducing the Puget Sound Genealogical Society’s Obituary Records Project Team, which included Jeanne Menchenton, Beverly Nelson and Nancy Ladenberger. The team was recognized for their outstanding support and work in the preservation of important records of genealogical value to the PSGS and other researchers interested in the families of Kitsap County, Washington.
Over the course of the last 12 years, these three individuals were the primary volunteers who collected over 40,500 obituaries from newspapers and other local sources. After clipping each obituary, attaching it to an index card and storing it in a plastic sleeve, the cards were alphabetized, labeled, checked for accuracy and stored in a large card catalog cabinet.
After completion of this portion of the project, the team created a database of each obituary with the name, date of death, publication name and date and any extra information that could be helpful to a researcher. The information was then posted on the PSGS website.
While many volunteers spent time on this project over the years, these three – Jeanne, Beverly and Nancy, were committed to finishing this project. Due to their dedication and tireless work, they richly deserved being recipients of a WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award.
