Seattle Genealogical Society Tip of the Week Elephind

TIP OF THE WEEK – DO YOU REMEMBER THIS ELEPHIND TIP?

Elephind, is a the Search Engine for Historical Newspapers. Many genealogist love the Library of Congress –  Chronicling America – historical, digitized newspapers website, but have you heard of Elephind.com? Their goal is to search all the world’s digitized, historical newspapers from one place at one time; it’s similar to the idea behind Travelocity.com with the airline industry.

Elephind currently is at over 200 million items from over 4,300 newspaper titles worldwide. That is far more than what you will find at Chronicling America.  In fact, Chronicling America is one of the sites Elephind has covered. Also like Chronicling America, Elephind is adding volume almost daily.

At the website for elephind,  start with the Search Tips.

The “proximity search” is particularly useful.  An example, using this syntax  “Jane Doe”~4 in Search will find for you :

•Jane Doe
•Jane E Doe
•Jane Elizabeth Doe
•Elizabeth Jane Smith, nee Doe

But it will exclude something like “Jane and Sally found a young, frightened doe in the woods”.

Elephind.com will be a good addition to your arsenal of historical newspapers websites and someday it might become the only one you will ever need.

SGS MEMBERS, DID YOU REMEMBER TO VOTE?

The SGS 2023 Election is April 1-30! Vote on SGS Board Members for 2023-24 and Changes to Bylaws

For 2023 Election information click hereGOOD SHEPHERD CENTER ELEVATOR UPDATE

The manager of the Good Shepherd Center has informed SGS that the elevator will likely be out of service well into May, and quite possibly until the end of May. The major hurdle at this point is getting all the permitting and reviewing required by Seattle and King County government done. Our apologies for the continued inconvenience.

100 years ago: 25 April 1923

If one is looking for aerial maps of Seattle from 1923, you are probably in luck. Three articles in two days noted the fact that two army planes had been in Seattle taking aerial photographs of the City for mapping purposes. “photographers had to take 750 snap shots to get her all in…” The article further explains “The pictures were taken to form a mosaic of the city… The map is being prepared for the army, but copies will also go to congressional committees to enable them to visualize the harbor and
development problems of Seattle.”

“Aviators Snap Seattle From Dizzy Height, City Has Pictures Taken Yesterday From Army Planes; to Make
U.S. Army Maps,” Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 24 Apr 1923, p H 13, col 8.

“Army Planes Leave Seattle,” Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 25 Apr 1923, p H6, col 4.

Seattle Genealogical Society Tip of the Week Generation by Generation Book

TIP OF THE WEEK –
THIS NEW BOOK IS GREAT!

By Lisa White, SGS Director of Publiations

Recently I had the pleasure of reading Generation by Generation: A Modern Approach to the Basics of Genealogy by Genealogy Guys Podcast co-host Drew Smith.Coincidently it came to me at a very appropriate time. Lately I have been involved in many discussions about how best to get started in genealogy. This book addresses this question wonderfully.

Directed towards beginning genealogists, this book provides an upbeat and clear guide to the steps involved in doing good genealogical research. The main focus is on United States records, but there is also a chapter devoted to research outside of the U.S. such as Canada, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. The chapter on DNA testing is especially good as it provides the basics for understanding types of DNA and how testing can help us with our projects.

Even if you are a seasoned genealogist, I recommend that you read this book. In genealogy, as in most things, there is always something to learn, and I came away rejuvenated with so many ideas and insights. I can’t wait to put some of these suggestions to work, especially in regards to organizing my digital files. Some of the tips can even save you money!

To help start or boost your research, you can get your copy at:

 JEAN A ROTH
1944-2023

We are saddened to have to report a pillar of our Society has passed away. Jean Roth was one of our super volunteers. She was a member of SGS for 46 years. She received an Honorary Lifetime Membership to SGS for her years of service. She will be so missed.

Some of you will remember when Jean was on the board as the Director of Education and most of you will remember Jean as the leader for many years of our Irish SIG and German SIG. She also was the leader for the now defunct Brick Wall Problem Solving Session that SGS had on Wednesdays from noon to 3:00 PM. Jean was SGS President from 1995-96. She has also served as Vice President.

Additionally, Jean was the organizer for our community outreach activities; the SGS booths at Irish Week/Festal at Seattle Center each March, including this March 2023, and at the Seattle Scottish Highland Games in Enumclaw each July.

Jean loved to travel and made that her career. Besides SGS, Jean also belonged to the Greater Seattle Chapter of the Germans from Russia, the Seattle Scottish Highland Games Association, and the Irish Heritage Club.

A visitation for Jean will be held Sunday, April 23, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Evergreen Washelli Funeral Home, 11111 Aurora Ave N, Seattle, WA 98133. A graveside service will occur Monday, April 24, 2023 at 12:00 PM at Evergreen Washelli Cemetery, 11111 Aurora Ave N, Seattle, WA 98133.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations may be made to: The Seattle Genealogical Society, The American Historical Society of Germans from Russia, The Irish Heritage Club, or Northwest Kidney Centers.

NEW AT THE SGS LIBRARY!

Oops, this is a correction. Yes, you saw this item in the last eNews! but the url inadvertently got messed up so it didn’t work. Sorry. So let’s try this again.

As of April 1, 2023,  a new subscription service, https://historygeo.com , is available at the SGS Library. This website is an online version of the Family Maps and Texas Land Survey Maps book series. Instead of looking at landowner maps township by township, you’ll have a single, interactive map containing over 12.3 million landowners among 30 states (all 29 of the public land states, plus Texas). A single click of a parcel of land will link to both Google maps and patents’ source documents at the Bureau of Land Management or Texas General Land Office. Also included is a collection of approximately 4000 maps from various sources showing landowners at a particular point in time. Sometime in the near future, SGS will offer a class on how to use this website. Watch for it.

“Real Estate Investment in Seattle Urged”

If only one had bought Seattle real estate back in 1923. On April 15, 1923, a newspaper headline read “Real Estate Investment in Seattle Urged”. The article went on to state “In no other city of the United States are conditions more favorable to profitable real estate operations…” “Full realization of this is the only prerequisite to a period of intense activity during which the present low level of values will be raised by rapid stages to approximate those obtaining elsewhere.”

“Real Estate Investment in Seattle Urged” , Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 15 April 1923, p10 col 1.

“Alice Gentle Laughs Over School Days” celebrates home town Opera singer Alice Gentle’s return to her Seattle and recounted recollections of old school times. The article noted that on the operatic stage she is “notably the lead of “Carmen”, “La Tosera”, “La Navarraise” and “Le Chemineau.” The article further explained that she was singing in “La Tosca” …with the San Carlo Opera
Company at the Metropolitan Theatre” and would appear at the Opera Comique in Paris
during the coming winter season.

Christine Schomaker Named One of 2022’s Outstanding Volunteers

Since 2003, the Washington State Genealogical Society has recognized over 600 outstanding volunteers and teams, nominated by their local society or genealogical organization for their service and dedication. These volunteers are the backbone of their local society, giving their time and expertise, to the organization and the field of genealogy. In the coming months, you will be introduced to each of the 2022 award recipients and learn why they received the 2022 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer and Team Award.

Today we’re introducing Christine Schomaker of Kenmore, Washington, who was nominated by the Seattle Genealogical Society.

Christine is the Swiss army knife of the Seattle Genealogical Society. Over the past 20 years, Christine has been treasurer, library director, operations director (three times!), and is starting her sixth year as membership director.

She is always willing to help out with just about anything SGS needs done, and has been the de facto SGS registrar for anything that involved registrations, including seminars, SGS’s online courses and managing the over 600 alumni of the Certification Discussion Group.

At the in-person seminars, Christine and her husband Eric were regulars in moving the sales items over to the seminar venue (and back!). She assumed the responsibility of sitting at the sales desk and handled all the monetary transactions.

Having served so much time on the SGS board, Christine is a key part of the society’s corporate memory, which is an important thing to have in these days of transition.

For more information on the WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award program, visit the Recognition page of the WSGS website or contact Info@wasgs.org. Please type “Volunteer Award” in the subject line.

Seattle Genealogical Society News

JESS RAMEY, VOLUNTEER
OF WINTER QUARTER 2023
Each quarter the Seattle Genealogical Society recognizes one member as our Volunteer of the Quarter. Our Volunteer for Winter Quarter 2023 is Jess Ramey.

Jess Ramey has been a member of SGS for twenty-six years and an SGS Library volunteer since 2016. Jess started helping out by sorting all the maps and then progressed to scanning and indexing document collections donated to the library over the years. Currently he is in the process of making those digital collections available on the library’s patron computers. Jess has also served as a Library Trustee and is currently a member of the Material Review Committee. When asked about what he likes about volunteering with SGS Jess said, “I like the feeling that I am contributing to others’ quests for information about their families.”

Jess also appreciates attending SGS events, especially in-person. Pre-pandemic, he attended many of the Spring and Fall seminars and enjoyed the interaction with the other attendees.

Jess’s personal genealogical interest is his family name. Although he has found much research on the Ramey surname, he has not yet been able to make a connection to the family in late 18th century Virginia. Census records indicate his third great-grandfather was born in Virginia in 1783, but he has not been able to confirm this, or identify parents.  This is a brick wall he has been attempting to break through for the past thirty years.

When Jess isn’t helping out at SGS or sleuthing genealogical mysteries, he enjoys spending time fishing with his sons. He also volunteers with the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program and works as a tax counselor/preparer every February-April tax season.

Congratulations and thank you Jess for all you do for our Society!SGS MEMBERSHIP MEETING

VIRTUAL SUNDAY: SOMEYHING OLD,
SOMETHING NEW
SUNDAY, MARCH 19, 2023
1:00 pm – 2:30 pm

This month’s presentation is “Finding Treasures in Academic Libraries”. Academic libraries, archives, and special collections are an often overlooked resource for genealogists. These collections, located on (usually) university campuses, will have resources available nowhere else. One’s ancestor does not need to have been a student or faculty member to find value in an academic library. New territory for you? Don’t feel intimidated. Jill Morelli’s excellent advice on the subject will guide you.

Please register in advance for this presentation.

Who wouldn’t want undivided writing time with like-minded genealogists?  Consider signing up for the SGS100 Writers’ C(r)amp to be held April 20-23, 2023 at the UW Friday Harbor Laboratories.

Wonderfully located in a nature preserve yet within easy distance to Friday Harbor, we will have 2+ days of undistracted writing time. Whether you are working on a personal project, a portfolio, or an entry for the SGS100 Family History Writing Contest this is an opportunity to start or polish up an existing project. Experts will be there to help. You can find out more and sign up at the SGS Centennial website page

“Women Paying for Working” informed the Seattle P-I.

Crouched in between an article regarding “Rum Men Pay Income Taxes” was another an article “Woman Paying For Working” noting that “Nearly one-sixth of the income tax returns being made at the office of the internal revenue collector in the federal building are filled by women.” A fitting article for Women’s History Month.

Seattle Genealogical Society Save Access to Immigration Records!

Genealogists and family historians, your help is needed to save access to historical immigration records!

The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has proposed a substantial fee hike to access millions of historical immigration records held exclusively by its genealogy program. This could effect you so it is really important that you post your comments and write to your Senators and Representative.

The comment deadline is now March 13th so please submit your comments by then. Please share this deadline with your networks, too. Encourage them to comment and contact their Senators and Representative. If genealogists don’t comment, USCIS will think we don’t care how long it takes to get records or how much it costs.

Visit the site below to learn more and make your voice heard in 3 easy steps! Thank you.  https://www.recordsnotrevenue.com/
