Reminder about the January Monthly Program

GFO proudly presents Stephen Hanks, author of Akee Tree, Saturday, January 16th, 2pm – 4pm.

This event is free to the Public…so no excuses!

Come spend the afternoon with us as we indulge in a talk by fellow genealogist and author, Stephen Hanks, who spent over 10 years tracing his paternal African American family line. He will be discussing the research behind his most recent book, Akee Tree: A Descendant’s Quest For His Slave Ancestors on the Eskridge Plantations.

The book is written as a narrative, so readers can experience the “thrill of the hunt” and follow along with Hanks’ research methodology to get a peek at the records he discovered in his search for ancestry in the United States as well as Africa.

Save the Dates for October 15 – 16, 2016

We understand that planning ahead is important, and we’d love to be first on your list of exotic places to visit, especially since we have the best views, activities, events, and of course the best company!

To help in your planning, we’re giving you fair warning that D. Joshua Taylor will be at our October 2016 Seminar and Workshop events this fall. Don’t miss it!

January Workshop – “Discover Your House History”

The GFO would like to cordially invite you to come hear our very own Connie Lenzen, author, researcher and board-certified genealogist, teach about the histories of the brick and mortar we all call home.

HouseHistory

Have you ever wondered who lived in your home or building before you? Have you ever wondered when your house was built, and maybe WHY?? Connie will lead us through the process of researching the history of your house. While her examples will begin from Multomah and Clackamas County, the principles are applicable to any location you might be curious about.

You should really hurry up and register now, as this session is limited to 50 attendees! Click here for a registration form.

Salem Witch Trails’ site confirmed…

Salem

An article this week in the Boston Globe walks readers and fellow researchers through what it took to make this discovery. A memorial is being planned, with more details to come from Salem Mayor, Kimberley Discoll.

Can you guess which records were used to help historians during the verification process?

What’s Happening this Week at the GFO?

Hunting and Gathering – Saturday, January 16th, 9:30am – 11am

Tennessee to Texas??!! Come helps us work on a family that moved from Tennessee to Texas, perhaps by way of Illinois, in the 1840’s. We will need to look for local sources, those not typically found on the internet, to break through those pesky brick walls. Hope to see you at this week’s meeting. Free to members. Visitors may request a guest pass at education@gfo.org.

Irish Group – Saturday, January 16th, noon – 2pm

Meeting programs vary and are meant to help participants gain a greater knowledge of Ireland, its history and culture as well as how to find and use a variety of resources to assist in Irish heritage research. Anyone with an interest in Irish genealogy is welcome to join us. Questions may be directed to: Chairman Suzanne Lemon at slemon46@yahoo.com.

January’s Monthly Program – Saturday, January 16th, 2pm – 4pm

Our speaker this month is author and genealogist, Stephen Hanks, who will be walking attendees through the making of his book, Akee Tree: A Descendant’s Quest for His Slave Ancestors on the Eskridge Plantations. Mr. Hanks will be giving a behind-the-scenes look at the research that went into his book, giving examples of the records he found in both the United States and Africa.

Library Work Party – Sunday, January 17th, 9am – noon

There’s another work party at the GFO library this week for those of you who can come. There’s lots to do and we’d love to have your help. Doors open at 9 a.m. and work usually wraps up around noon. Some people come for just an hour or so and you’re welcome to do the same. Any time you can share is valuable. Hope to see you there.

Family Tree Maker Class – Sunday, January 17th, 1pm – 3pm

We’ll be covering some alternative database software programs this week, as you may have heard that Ancestry.com has stopped selling Family Tree Maker since January 1st. Please email Laurel Smith at bearpair@comcast.net. This special interest group, like all the others that meet at the GFO, is free and open to the general public.

Learn & Chat – Wednesday, January 20th, 10am – noon

Join us to talk about your genealogy questions and help provide support to others. Facilitated by Connie Lenzen.

DNA Q&A – Wednesday, January 20th, 1pm – 3pm

Lisa McCullough will be available to help answer your DNA questions, whether you are new and just getting started or have more involved questions.
