GFO’s November Stars!! It’s a Double Act…
Keith and Darlene Pyeatt represent stardom to GFO for their many presentations, from their recent explanation of how to use the German Parish Map Books last month to on-going workshops on many topics from beginner level to advanced. They work as a team and even go to prisons to help the inmates with genealogy. Prisoners are not allowed to use the internet, so the Pyeatt’s have brought many books and other resources to the prison and have completed some internet research for them. “We hope our work helps them have a sense of connection to their family and the community.” Thank you, Keith and Darlene!
Notes from the Underground…or, wait…nope, just from last weekend’s Seminar!
D. Joshua Taylor in his Saturday lecture to GFO entitled “Bridging the Gap: Finding Ancestors in the United States Between 1780 and 1830′” mentioned several special collections and archival repositories that could be accessed via online databases generally available at “public and/or college and university libraries.” The following list is probably not definitive, but here are some Oregon and/or Portland area locations for the following databases mentioned by Taylor :
Early American Imprints: Series I, known as “Evans,” covering 1690-1800.
At Portland State University. May be at Reed College via Readex AllSearch.
Early American Imprints Series II, known as “Shoemakler-Shaw, covering 1808-1819.
At Portland State University.
ArchiveFinder.
At Reed College.
Early American Newspapers.
At Reed College & GFO via American Ancestors ; and at Portland State University, which probably has the most complete set, Series I, covering 1899-1876, & Series II and II, covering 1821-1876.
19th Century U.S. Newspapers.
Sold by Gale, not at any state or regional repository. But probably all of the items in this set have been microfilmed by The U.S. Program, supported by NEH, & thus should be available via ILL though your local library.

#GivingTuesday! It truly takes a village to keep a non-profit going!!
Tuesday, Nov 29th, 9:30 AM – 5 PM
Come give some, or all for the really ambitious, of your day on Giving Tuesday at the GFO! Why?? Because it’s good for the soul, good for the library, and a good way to keep a sound body and mind! We swear and promise sincerely. Mostly it’s good for helping to make sure our resources at the GFO are being made accessible as quickly as possible for all our patrons.
We’re having a full day Work Party on Nov 29th, with coffee, tea and pastries in the morning, followed by pizza and beverages in the afternoon.
No sign-up needed, just please come on by as and when you can! Every little bit helps, and as always, THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO!!! Remember to use the hashtag on your Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or other social media to tell your friends on social media what you’re going to be up to.
