Genealogists Need a Code Of Conduct Too – Blog Article for Awareness

As genealogical research involves peoples from all around the globe, inclusiveness and respect for diversity are a central part of our professional cornerstone. Nicka Smith’s recent article “Home Training – Why Genealogy Needs a Code of Conduct” gives some very good insights to this topic, calling for awareness from her fellow genealogical researchers.

Last year, GFO adopted an inclusiveness sign (shown above) that we’ve posted on the front door of our research library. We also adopted the following Diversity Statement:

The Genealogical Forum of Oregon does not and shall not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion (creed), gender, gender expression, age, national origin (ancestry), disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status, in any of its activities or operations. These activities include, but are not limited to the hiring and firing of staff, selection of volunteers and vendors, and provision of services. We are committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for all members of our staff, volunteers, patrons, and vendors.
