You already know me to be a bit quirky (don’t agree too quickly!) but was reading an article about the evolution of the porch on early Colonial Dutch homes. A photo of the Van Cortland Manor House (in New York) looks so much like the Chief Factor’s House at Fort Vancouver, don’t you agree?
So does this prove anything? Well perhaps to a deeper-digging scholar than I am today. But oh so interesting.
Strangely enough, they both look like southern homes where the main floors were raised above ground. Could the Dutch and southern home built this way in case of floods? Or to create air flow as a form of air conditioning?
I think you could be right. Porches were definitely a Southern thing, and there could have been many reasons why they would want to raise it. If nothing else, it would enable them to see farther over their domain!
I’m trying to find out were to go to get blood work done to see how much Indian blood I have ,now that I’m older I want to know who I am and have no idea how to go about it can you please help
AncestryDNA.com is a good place to start. The test usually costs $99, but there are often sales, so keeping watching that site!
The building also closely resembles some Army administration buildings.
