SUFFRAGE SPECIAL WHISTLE STOP TOUR!
Did you know Washington women permanently won the right to vote in 1910, ten years before national women’s suffrage was enacted?
Did you know the National American Woman Suffrage Association Convention was held right here in Seattle in July of 1909?
The train many of the suffragists traveled on to reach the convention in Seattle was dubbed the “Suffrage Special”. Suffragists came from around the state, and around the nation. The “Suffrage Special” arrived in Washington State at Spokane and made stops en route to Seattle, gathering more suffragists along the way.
You are invited along on this virtual Suffrage Special Whistle Stop Tour! Each day, from August 19th through August 26th, a new video will be posted on the “Washington Historical Society” Facebook page and the “Votes for Women Suffrage Centennial” Facebook page.
These daily video segments are suitable for viewers of all ages. Each whistle stop segment will be hosted by a local historical organization and will explore women’s suffrage history and its legacy in their geographic region. Hop on board to learn more about the movement and the activists.
