NEW SUNDAY HOURS AT SGS LIBRARY
Due to difficulty finding volunteers to cover the desk at the SGS Library on Sundays, the Board has changed the hours of operation to 1-5 pm.
DROP IN TECHNOLOGY DISCUSSIONS FOR ALL
* NEW TECHNOLOGY TUESDAYS *
Lonely at home working on research projects? Beginning on March 15th, drop-in discussions will be hosted by Lisa Chan each Tuesday from 12-3pm at the SGS Library. Bring your laptop or mobile device, visit with other members and learn from each other while working on your family history. Discuss current projects, hardware, software, organizing data, and technology trends in genealogy.
All levels of experience are welcome. Participants are encouraged to visit and help one another with projects. These drop-in sessions are about socializing and learning while researching.
While quick questions are always welcome, please be considerate and direct your specific hardware and software problems to the appropriate vendors; we really can’t offer technical support.
Email Lisa Chan, SGS Director of Technology, sgsdirtechnology@gmail.com for more information.
Note ** Because this is not a special interest group, use of the library on Tuesdays is dependent on library scheduling. Occasionally the session will be unhosted.
THANK YOU, VOLUNTEERS!
A BIG thank-you to all those who responded to our plea for help at the SGS Booth during the Irish Week festivities last weekend! Seventeen people were signed up to help, insuring a successful event. Thank you all so much!
JOIN OUR TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE!
We’re looking for a web administrator. Volunteers should have (or want to learn!) comprehensive knowledge of managing a CMS (Drupal, WordPress). Commitment is about 10 hrs/month after training. This position is not responsible for creating or editing content on our site. You’ll coordinate with the Director of Technology to keep our site’s backend updated and running smoothly. Do you know of someone with these skills? Please feel free to pass the info along.
We’d also like to find a person interested in being a Library IT/AV Manager. This position works closely with the Director of Library and the Director of Technology to look after our onsite computers, network, and presentation hardware and accessories. Volunteers should have experience setting up small networks, updating operating systems, installing hardware, running a projector, and enjoy the idea of spending a few hours each week in the library. Commitment is about 10 hrs/month, and occasional special projects.
Seeking persons interested in participating in our digital archiving initiatives. We’re planning to add plenty of new content to our site this year. We’ll need help with scanning projects, big and small. Volunteers should be comfortable working email and entering data into spreadsheets. Will train. Commitment is variable 2-15 hrs/month, and occasional special projects. Scanning happens in the library, indexing can be done remotely.
Maybe you have a talent we don’t even know we need yet. If you have experience with technology and computing in general, or audio or video production, please reach out to us.
For more information about any of these opportunities, please contact Lisa Chan, sgsdirtechnology@gmail.com .
