FALL MEMBERSHIP MEETING  

This is a reminder the SGS Fall Membership Meeting will be held Saturday, October 1st, from 1:00 – 2:30 pm. in the Seattle Genealogical Society Library. Due to circumstances beyond our control, scheduled guest speaker, Cyndi Ingle, famous for her website Cyndi’s List, will not be available to speak at this meeting. However, Ann Wright, Director of the Library, will give an account of major developments in the SGS Library.

There will be a pre-meeting social hour with coffee, tea, and light snacks beginning at noon. This is a great opportunity to meet fellow SGS members,  the current Board of Directors, and fellow researchers. Perhaps you’ll find someone who can provide a clue or two for your own family history!

DR. ANNA HENDERSON CHAVELLE

January 28, 1933 – September 15, 2016

SGS member Dr. Anna Henderson (Chipman) Chavelle passed away suddenly at the Aljoya residence, where she made her home with her wife Christine Knutson.  She was born in Seattle and received both her undergraduate and M.D. degrees from the University of Washington.  Her family medical practice was first in Wallingford, then in the Greenlake area of Seattle.

Dr. Chavelle had served as Chief of Staff and on the Board of Northwest Hospital, and had been a President of the Washington State Family Physicians, as well as the Washington State Medical Association.  She was preceded in death by her brother, William Henderson and is survived by her spouse Christine Knutson, her daughter Judith (David) Nielsen, her granddaughters Anna and Victoria, her sister Elizabeth Gordon and sister-in-law Diana Henderson, as well as six nieces and nephews and thirteen great nieces and nephews. There will be a Celebration of her Life at the Seattle Yacht Club on October 9th from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M.

An Invitation From SGS Publications

The Publications Committee invites submissions of article manuscripts to be considered for inclusion in our Bulletin. We are also eager to find volunteers who are interested in layout or in proofing texts.  And we would very much like to learn of members who enjoy writing book reviews, a feature that we plan to reintroduce in our biannual publication.  Please contact: publications@seattlegenealogicalsociety.org

 Fall Seminar Volunteers Needs!

As we come closer to our Fall Seminar on October 15th, we still have a few open volunteer opportunities:

•Shopping for Snacks: This involves one afternoon to go to Costco, Walmart and the Bakery Outlet to purchase snacks for the Seminar.  Ideally shopping would be done on the afternoon of Oct 13th or Oct 14th.  The shopping list will be provided.
•Serving Snacks on Saturday:  We need someone to make sure all the trays are full during the seminar.  You would need to arrive by 7 am on Saturday.

SGS FALL SEMINAR

FEATURING EMILY AULICINO

Our Fall Seminar will explore the fascinating and rapidly developing science of genetic genealogy. A special feature of this event will be the two tracks of presentation. Advanced and beginner classes will be taught by our speaker with the assistance of the SGS DNA Special Interest Group. Emily Aulicino will be the featured speaker. She is the author of “Genetic Genealogy: The Basics and Beyond” (2014)  and is also the Regional Coordinator for the International Society of Genetic Genealogists. Ms. Aulicino teaches genetic genealogy classes at the Genealogical Forum of Oregon (Portland) as well as weekly classes on writing childhood memories and family stories.

The Seminar will be held at the Fairview Christian School, 844 NE 78th Street, Seattle, WA 98115.  There is plenty of free parking! Doors will open at 8:00 a.m. with Welcome at 9:00 a.m. Closing time 4:30 p.m.

150th Anniversary of the GAR

The Puget Sound Civil War Roundtable will be re-dedicating the memorial of Hiram Gale, Washington State’s last Civil War Veteran, and Celebrating 150 years of the “Grand Army of the Republic”, GAR,  on October 20th at 1:00 pm.

Mr. Gale was a teenager during the War Between the States, and lived to see his country through two World Wars as well. He was a Vermont native who spent his final days at American Lake. He rests in Washelli Cemetery.

The ceremony begins at 1:00 PM and is followed by a reception. If you are planning to attend, please RSVP: shinodad@gmail.com
