FINDING VITAL STATISTIC DATA

At this meeting, come learn about research tools that can help you locate obscure documentation of life’s major events.

Genealogy Problem Solvers is led by Harold Hinds Jr., Duane Funk, and Tom O’Brien.

All of our special interest groups are free and open to the public. Bring a friend, or seven of them!

Unravel the mysteries of DNA research with presenter and author Don Anderson.

Come out to the GFO Library this Saturday, Nov 18th, at 2pm, to hear author Don Anderson discuss his new book, Paper and Spit.

MSS Features Aunt Jane House Jesuale 2014-12 Box 3 File 6 Page 38

Click the image for a preview of the Jesuale Collection!

We’re putting ’em online for you to research from home!

Did you know the GFO has a digital manuscripts collection? Do you know what type of material it contains? It contains some very exciting genealogical gems, my darlings!

Jesuale Collection (2014-12)

This week we found that this collection’s creator was connected to the author of Aunt Jane of Kentucky, a book written in 1907. The documentation in this manuscript collection shows that Aunt Jane’s author, Lydia/Lida/Liza Obenchain, pen name Elizabeth Calvert Hall (also Liza Calvert Hall), was the wife of William Obenchain.

The first chapter of Ms. Obenchain’s book, titled “Sally Ann’s Experience,” was recommended by Theodore Roosevelt during his speech “Industrial Training and National Development,” delivered on May 31, 1907 at the semi-centennial celebration of the founding of agricultural colleges in the U.S. in Lansing, Michigan.

This collection is currently being indexed, but click HERE for a preview or email manuscripts@gfo.org to order a copy of the complete manuscript.

Ford Building Parking Updates

We recently learned about the following changes and wanted to give you all a heads-up:

The parking lot on SE 11th Ave, across from the Ford Building, no longer offers pay-to-park, but is still available for permit holders.
The parking lot directly behind the Ford Building is now offering up to 3 hours parking instead of just 2 hours.
The parking lot on SE 10th Ave, across Division St from the Ford Building, is still offering pay-to-park options.

Please note, these changes have been implemented by the Ford Building Management.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 18th

Genealogical Problem Solvers Group 9:30 – 11:30am

FINDING VITAL STATISTIC DATA – Join us as Harold, Duane, and Tom share research tips about their search for an elusive divorce document.

GenTalk 2 – 3pm

This GenTalk will focus on using Don’s story to illustrate “What to say when making contact with new matches.” This can be one of the most delicate and challenging aspects of finding close relatives, or wanting to create a positive experience with new cousins. Discovering a new match is much like finding a fish at the end of your pole, and now you need to reel in the fish. There is a method – what you say and how you say it is important.

BOTH THESE EVENTS ARE FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 19th

Library Work Party 9am – noon

There’€™s another work party at the GFO library today for those of you who can come. There’€™s lots to do and we’d love to have your help. Doors open at 9 and work usually wraps up around noon. Some people come for just an hour or so and you’€™re welcome to do the same. Any time you can share is valuable. Hope to see you there.

Beginner DNA 1 – 3pm

Topic: Triangulation!
Have you not located your common ancestor for the Y and autosomal DNA? Have you proven your Y-lineage through DNA back to your oldest known ancestor? Emily will cover how to triangulate for Y-DNA (basically works for mitochondrial DNA as well) and autosomal DNA testing. Learn why it is important to do so.

While waiting for this class, research your genealogy deep and wide (as far back as you can, bringing down all the ancestors you can to the 1900s, and download your matches’ segments into a spreadsheet. Also, test any 2-4th cousins you can. Do as much as you can, but know that all of these help you determine your common ancestor(s) more easily.

There are two handouts. Click here to download. Please bring a copy of the evaluation form which can be found here. Questions? Ask Emily at aulicino@hevanet.com.

HOLIDAY SCHEDULE

Wednesday, November 23nd GFO’s library will close at 1pm. Researcher early this day!

Thursday, November 24th GFO’s library will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday. See you again at 9:30am on Friday, November 25th!

Brought to you by the Jewish Genealogical Society of Oregon

“At some point, almost every genealogy researcher will hit the proverbial brick wall or dead end with one or many of their ancestors. Records appear to be missing, a maiden name seems impossible to find or you need to find ancestors in another country but don’t know where to look. The resources out there are many and varied. Sometimes all the options available can be downright overwhelming.”

JGSO’s meeting will be a helping hands workshop. You’re encouraged to bring a list of 3 or 5 of your most difficult brick-wall family history questions to the meeting on Sunday, Nov 12th at 10:30am at Congregation Ahavath Achim.

“Take advantage of this golden opportunity to get some one-on-one help, or make use of this groups’ collective knowledge to smash some of your brick walls to smithereens! Bring your research and family tree on a flash drive or on a laptop or tablet. Internet access will be available.”

Our fearless leader, Laurel Smith, has been working hard with our Library Committee to produce new labels for our books as part of the GFO’s recataloging project.

Now all we need is people to help stick the labels on the books! We have several boxes of books that aren’t currently on the shelves because they need their new labels. Come out this Sunday to help Laurel in this effort so we can get the books back where they belong, back on the shelves!!

Speaker: Don Anderson

Paper & Spit: DNA + Genealogy, and How to Make That First Contact. Like many adoptees, Don Anderson wanted to know where he came from. His new book, Paper and Spit, chronicles his journey. Using both DNA and genealogy, Don finds not only the identity of his birth parents but also his true ethnic heritage.

This GenTalk will focus on using Don’s story to illustrate “What to say when making contact with new matches.” This can be one of the most delicate and challenging aspects of finding close relatives, or wanting to create a positive experience with new cousins. Saturday, Oct 21st at 2pm

You’ve been meaning to write up your family history stories and findings, but with several thousand people on your tree, the task is overwhelming. Never fear, though, because help is here! The GFO’s own Marti Dell, Co-Editor of The Bulletin, can help you identify just one thing you really need to share with others, then write it up! Does anyone else know how your grandma and grandpa met? Why are so many of your female relatives named “Oney”? Some day your 9-year-old grandson will want to know about your family history trip to Sweden. You won’t get everything written until you get one thing written.

And since you’re writing up just one thing anyway, consider sending a copy to The Bulletin for publication. We have editors and proofreaders who will make sure your commas are in the right place and your source citations are formatted properly. What we don’t have, but need, is your story.

This event is FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. So really, there’s no excuse.

Genealogical Problem Solvers to the Rescue…

Saturday, Oct 21st, 9:30 – 11:30am

SPECIAL TREAT THIS WEEK: The group will spend the first five minutes or so of the meeting brainstorming about a problem presented by an attendee chosen at random. So come on by and bring a puzzle for our problem masters!

This week’s GPS problem: To find any additional information on the subject’s siblings or ancestors in central New York or Iowa.

The research team of Harold Hinds, Tom O’Brien, and/or Duane Funk will review basic resources that are available for the subject’s two main research locations. They will also reveal the significant differences between the two locations for the benefit of the group.

Don’t miss this session, even if you don’t have ancestors in Iowa or New York. Many of the techniques used are completely applicable wherever you may be doing research.
This meeting (like all our interest groups) is free and open to the public!

This Week at the GFO…

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 21st

Genealogical Problem Solvers, GPS 9:30 – 11:30am

GPS is a monthly support group where we help each other find information about a family line. We will learn to do a reasonably exhaustive search and develop research plans. The focus will shift depending on the needs of the group. Several experienced researchers have volunteered to help. Beginners and intermediate researchers are encouraged to submit problems to work on. For more information contact Katie Daly at GPS@gfo.org.

Italian Interest Group Noon – 2pm

Tips for Determining Your Immigrant Ancestor’s Place of Origin – Learn what records are available in the United States that can provide you with the place of nativity of your immigrant ancestor. This will be interactive, learn by doing. Bring your laptop computer. Facilitated by Keith Pyeatt.

GenTalk: Write It Up! 2 – 3pm

Presenter: Marti Dell, Co-Editor of the GFO Bulletin

Come learn how YOU can write and submit an article to be published in GFO’s quarterly publication The Bulletin. We have editors and proofreaders who will make sure your commas are in the right place and your source citations are formatted properly. What we don’t have, but need, is your story!
All of these events are FREE and open to the public.
