NATIONAL ARCHIVES FACILITY
 IN SEATTLE SAVED

The combined efforts of 35 Northwest tribes, congressional delegates from the states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska, as well as Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson, and NARA patrons like yourself, have paid off. The sale of the National Archives Facility in Seattle is halted!

The difference in sentiment of the current Administration vs the outgoing administration is also a major contributing factor. In a letter, the acting director of the the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), Shalanda D Young,  said, “But the process that led to the decision to approve the sale of the Federal Archives and Records Center is contrary to this Administration’s tribal-consultation policy, and I am accordingly withdrawing OMB’s approval of the sale of that facility.” 

For now, the National Archives and Records Administration in Seattle, directly across the street from the Seattle Genealogical Society library, is staying put. Hopefully it won’t be long before we genealogy enthusiasts can get back to using both these resources in person.

• Are you Lost? Using Maps and Gazetteers for English Research:Learn what maps, gazetteers and directories are available for researching your ancestors in England. Learn from examples how to make good use of these tools to find where your ancestors are, what they did, when, where, and why they may have moved.
• Effective Use of England’s National Archives Website:Learn how to effectively use the research tools, indexes, educational tools and catalogs on this large website to find your ancestors and to put them into their correct historical context. 
• English Parish Registers: How to Access, Use and Interpret:Learn how to access, use, and correctly interpret the information found in the christening, marriage, and burial registers of the English parish church. See examples of the problems to watch for and the clues given for further research. Learn what to do when your ancestor is not found.
• Buried Treasures: What’s in the English Parish Chest:The English parish was both an ecclesiastical and a civil jurisdiction. Both jurisdictions created informative records and kept them in the Parish Chest. This presentation will examine the breadth and wealth of information that can be found, going well beyond the baptism, marriage, and burial registers.

• Paul Milner, a native of northern England, professional genealogist and international lecturer. He teaches English and Scottish research tracks at SLIG, IGHR and the British Institute. Paul is a recipient of UGA Fellow Award (2018) and the FGS David S. Vogels Jr Award (2019). He is the author of six publications providing how-to guidance for English and Scottish researchers. What we don’t have is a clear vision statement. What does SGS want to be in the future? This question is especially relevant as we consider celebrating our centennial in 2023.

IRISH WEEK

As many of you know, SGS has had a booth at the annual Seattle Irish Heritage Club’s Irish Week festivities. This year the event has gone virtual, as have most all events, but SGS will still be part of the program. 

The Seattle Irish Heritage Club has made a video covering all things Irish in the Emerald City and its environs to be shown on their website. One segment in this video discusses SGS’s involvement with the Irish Heritage Club, and with the local Irish community. The link on their website will go “live” on Saint Patrick’s Day (when else?), and will be available for viewing thereafter. We will post a link to that video on the SGS website after it goes live.  SGS Members – VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
Time and time again you have heard how important volunteers are to our organization. If you missed the SGS membership meeting on Saturday, March 13, 2021, you may not know we have multiple board positions open. Elections are not far off. Please consider helping the Society. Here are the openings and a brief description for each:   

• Vice President assists the President in the performance of Presidential duties and assumes them in the absence of the President or upon the inability of the President to serve. The Vice President is also responsible for community relations and long-range planning.
• Secretary records all activities, maintaining record integrity and security; official notifications by the Society, and Society correspondence.
• Director of Publications is responsible for the entire production process and content of all Society print and media.
• Director of Volunteers recruits and manages all Society volunteers.

Board members take an active role in managing the affairs of the Society by participating in monthly board meetings and overseeing the programs specific to their position. 

Board meetings are currently held on the second Monday of each month. Right now the board meetings are virtual, and you will always have the option to attend a board meeting virtually.

At 10:15 am PST, the Family Tree Maker SIG meets online via Zoom. Rob Sexton is the chairperson. The SGS General Membership Meeting is scheduled to start at 12:00 pm PST. SGS members, please plan to attend. There are important items on the agenda: nominations for the SGS board and the election, possible digitization of some materials owned by the SGS Library, and possible relocation of the SGS Library. 

After the SGS Membership Meeting, starting at 1:00 pm PST,  Pam Vestal will give this month’s Second Saturday Series presentation, “Why They Left, Where They Went, and the Tales Their Journeys Can Reveal”. Come learn:

• Why did our ancestors leave their homes?  
• Why did they settle where they did?  
• What secrets about them might their migration paths reveal.

JENNIFER WELLS, VOLUNTEER OF WINTER QUARTER
  Each quarter, the Seattle Genealogical Society recognizes one member as our Volunteer of the Quarter. Our Volunteer for Winter 2021 Quarter is Jennifer Wells.

Jennifer is being honored for her work writing grant proposals. Our most recent grant from 4Culture enabled the society to purchase sneeze guards, thermometers, and other materials to enable safe reopening of the library when State COVID restrictions allow.

Jennifer has been a member of Seattle Genealogical Society (SGS) since April 2018. She has attended SGS seminars and Second Saturday events and participates in the DNA Special Interest Group (SIG). She always appreciates opportunities to learn something new about genealogy, which might be access to new historical resources, techniques to analyze and organize genealogical research, or sharing of genealogical research and family stories with other members. She particularly enjoyed Herb McDaniel’s presentations at the DNA SIG.

In her personal genealogical research, Jennifer has many examples of (not uncommon) family secrets kept by relatives born in the 1920s and 1930s. She was able to determine that a DNA match predicted to be a first cousin is her half-niece from a paternal half-sibling, which would have been difficult to determine by genealogical research alone. The secret was shared only after her father’s death. Jennifer has many such stories to tell.

She has also had fun finding new Irish surnames. On a visit to Ireland in 2019, she met an elderly gentleman who may be distantly related (shared surname and ancestral location). The trip was not intended for genealogical research, but rather to see where her ancestors may have lived, so stumbling onto a possible relative was just a lucky coincidence. DNA suggests she also has Scottish and Northern Irish ancestors. The future holds more research and perhaps a trip to Scotland.

Jennifer has been the grants coordinator since January 2020. She says, “I like to find money for SGS so that a variety of programs and resources can be offered to its members and guests.”  We can all appreciate that.

A PEEK AT THE SPRING SEMINAR! 
The SGS Spring Seminar is scheduled for May 15, 2021, and the guest speaker will be Paul Miner.

Paul, a professional genealogist and internationally known lecturer, is a native of northern England who specializes in British Isles research. He has been designing genealogy workshops, writing books, and lecturing for over 35 years. Paul holds an advanced degree in Theology and is particularly knowledgeable about the church and its role in record keeping. As a genealogist he speaks on a variety of topics relating to research in the British Isles, migration to North America, and research methodology. Stay tuned. HOPE FOR THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES IN SEATTLE
  On Friday, February 12, 2021, a US District Court judge granted a preliminary injunction to halt the sale of the National Archives property on Sand Point Way NE in Seattle. In coalition with 29 tribes and community organizations,  Washington AG Bob Ferguson filed suit on January 4, 2021, seeking to declare the sale of the property to developers illegal. The injunction will allow time for the suit to work its way through the courts.

MOVING THE ARCHIVES
Here an excerpt from a press release from the Attorney General of Washington State, as well as a link to the rest of the release.     SEATTLE —  “Attorney General Bob Ferguson today announced he will host a remote  public meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2021, so the public can share their comments on plans by the federal government to sell Seattle’s National Archives building and move the records thousands of miles away.

The federal government did not hold any meetings of its own in the Pacific Northwest, and did not consult with state, local, or tribal leaders in the region prior to announcing its decision to sell the Archives facility.

One member of the Public Buildings Reform Board (PBRB) recently said the sale would allow the Archives building to “become a part of the community, as opposed to what it is today.”

The office will record the public comments and forward them to the PBRB. Ferguson will also formally invite the PBRB members to attend the remote public hearing. The public meeting will be held via Zoom from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 19, 2021.”
