Helpful Volunteers Needed for Sunday, Feb 7th!

The Virginia collection has been completed with new call numbers, but there are still labels to attach and tape. And now we are working hard to get the new call numbers changed for the British collection. We are working especially on any books related to Ireland research so they will be in good order for the Irish workshop in March.

Come out if you can! The Library will be open for volunteers to come and go as schedules allow from 9 a.m. to noon this coming Sunday, February 7th.

What’s Happening this Week at the GFO?

Virginia Group – Saturday, February 6th, 10am – Noon

From Scotland to Ireland to America, come learn about the political and economic conditions in Scotland and Ireland that moved 250,000 people, now known as Scotch-Irish, to America in the 1700s. Discover the main settlement areas and migration routes in the colonies and get a sense of their lifestyle. This class is open to the public.

 German Group – Saturday, February 6th, 1pm – 3pm

Two for one – Presentation and Book Swap!

Gerry Lenzen will be presenting Footsteps of our German Ancestors.  Learn how to backtrack the trail your ancestors left in America to their original home in Germany. Careful acquisition and examination of records and sources on this side of the ocean can determine where your ancestors originated on the other side. Learn how to record and scrutinize oral traditions and correspondence. Identify record types that point to family origins, then locate those records and resources

Then…

When was the last time you actually used those books on your shelves?  Bring a few to the meeting to sell or swap.  A few to get you started:

An Atlas of German Migration and America by Carrie Elridge

Researching in Germany: A Handbook for your visit to the homeland of your ancestors by Roger P Minert

If I Can, You Can Decipher Germanic Records by Edna Bentz

Library Work Party – Sunday, February 7th, 9am – Noon

The Virginia collection has been completed with new call numbers! Three cheers!! But, alas, there are still labels to attach and tape. Since many hands make light work, we hope to see you there! Volunteers are welcome to come anytime between 9 a.m. and noon, as their schedules allow.

Photoshop Elements Group – Wednesday, February 10th, 1:30pm – 2:30pm

Join us for a discussion of how to use Photoshop Elements to present your family history research, pictures and stories. We discuss scanning techniques, photo restoration, creating pages for presentation, resources and anything else participants want to know related to this topic. All are welcome, from beginners to more advanced users. Come and learn and share your ideas and questions. Taught by Sarah Holmes.

Don’t forget! We’re open late, until 8pm, on Wednesday evenings!!
