Just some super hip hot-links in genealogy!!

Ancestors

The NEHGS is offering free access to two of its databases, but this is a limited-time thing, so hurry, start clicking and explore what wonders of research lie ahead!

▪ The NEHGS’s Vermont Collections, in honor of the Green Mountain State’s 225th birthday, are open for free perusing for a full month.

▪ Beara, Ireland: The Annals of Beara? That’s right, the annals of Beara of Ireland are open for free research and curiosity seekers. We’re talking family records ranging in date from 1776 to 1992, with possible links back to American immigration.

Treasures Raffle – Won’t you pitch in something nice?

Raffle

You’re invited to contribute to the Treasures Raffle. What is that?

Members donate new or gently-used items that may interest those who attend our seminar. Great examples of items donated in the past include scarves, hand-made tote bags, or even gift cards to our very own Ford Food + Drink.

It’s a pleasant change of pace during a conference to be able to look over the fun donations and drop a ticket into the bag to win one of the prizes. Drop off your donation to the GFO’s Treasures Raffle before March 10th, and thanks!!

What’s Happening this Week at the GFO?

Virginia Group – Saturday, March 5th, 10am – 2pm

Topic this Month: Land Records in State Land States – From the Beginning

According to William Dollarhide in “Retracing the Trails of Your Ancestors Using Deed Records,” 90% of adult males in this county before 1850 were landowners. Not many early records include such a large portion of the population, which makes them an invaluable resource for genealogists. For our February meeting, we will focus on land records in state land states with an emphasis on Virginia.

Group Group – Saturday, March 5th, 1pm – 3pm

We will look beyond Ancestry and FamilySearch to a couple of websites that provide help with German research – Genealogy.net and MyHeritage. Bring examples from your own trees that we can search.

Manuscripts Work Party – Sunday, March 6th, 9am – noon.

There’s another work party at the GFO for our Digital Manuscripts Project this week! Everything from organizing original manuscript collections in preparation for scanning to pulling staples while chatting with good friends to inventory updating and learning how to use the scanner. Doors open at 9 and work usually wraps up around noon. Some people come for just an hour or so and you’re welcome to do the same. Any time you can share is valuable. Hope to see you there!

Free First Monday!! – Monday, March 7th, 10am – noon.

Just like every first Monday of the month, non-membered guests, friends and family can utilize the GFO Library’s resources without the pesky one-time visitor fee!

Photoshop Elements Group – Wednesday, March 9th, 1:30pm – 2:30pm.

Join us for a discussion of how to use Photoshop Elements to present your family history research, pictures and stories. We discuss scanning techniques, photo restoration, creating pages for presentation, resources and anything else participants want to know related to this topic. All are welcome, from beginners to more advanced users. Come and learn and share your ideas and questions. Taught by Sarah Holmes.
