Marjorie Enneking Memorial Gathering

Marj
We will be holding a memorial gathering instead of a formal funeral to remember Marjorie Enneking this upcoming Saturday, March 19th. The event will be held in the Screening Room at the Hotel Deluxe in downtown Portland. Appetizers and non-alcoholic beverages will be served (don’t worry – there is a bar in the hotel lobby 20 feet away). We will have picture albums for browsing and ask that Marj’s friends and family come to share stories, connect, and have a good time. Marj’s daughter is planning to wear jeans!
When: Saturday, March 19th from 2PM to 5PM Where: The Hotel Deluxe; 729 SW 15th Avenue, Portland, OR 97205
The Hotel is two blocks from the Providence Park Max station. Parking is available on the street, in a public building across the street, and there is valet parking in front of the hotel.

Whether or not you are able to attend, you are more than welcome to leave a message on a digital memory book located HERE.

We’ve had a few people ask about things like sending flowers or gifts, and suggest the following:

Marj’s family will be setting up an endowed scholarship in her name at Portland State University in the area of Mathematics Education (we are told this will be the very first Math Ed. Scholarship, which we think is great!). If you would like to contribute, please make out a check to the PSU Foundation, and reference the Marjorie Enneking (we haven’t yet determined an exact name). For more information, go to www.pdx.edu.

Following her retirement, Marj took on a second career of sorts and spent many happy hours volunteering at the Genealogical Forum of Oregon. She would love people to support them as well. Their website is www.gfo.org, or you can email give@gfo.org.

PLEASE forward this announcement to people that we may not be aware of, but that knew Marj well, or would like to come to remember her.

For anyone who may be coming from a distance and might wish to spend the night in Portland the Hotel Deluxe has rooms available and is offering discounted rates: http://www.hoteldeluxeportland.com/

Tracy

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!
In addition to working the RA shift on Wednesday evenings, Tracy faithfully assists the Library Committee by stamping and labeling books, books, and MORE books. She can successfully empty an entire cart in an evening—and her accuracy and attention to detail is so appreciated as she catches the occasional cataloging error. Thank you Tracy!

(Each month, the GFO’s Board votes for a Star Volunteer. The nominations box is located in the Library above the donations jar, just next to the main entrance.)

What’s Happening this Week at the GFO?

Hunting and Gathering – Saturday, March 19th, 9:30am – 11am

Join us for a monthly support group where we help each other find information about a family line. We will share expertise about resources and search strategies. We will learn to do a reasonably exhaustive search and develop research plans. The focus will shift depending on the needs of the group. Several experienced researchers have volunteered to help. Beginners and intermediate researchers are encouraged to attend and bring specific problems to work on. Free to members. Visitors may request a guest pass at education@gfo.org.

Irish Group – Saturday, March 19th, Noon – 2pm

Meeting programs vary and are meant to help participants gain a greater knowledge of Ireland, its history and culture as well as how to find and use a variety of resources to assist in Irish heritage research.

Anyone with an interest in Irish genealogy is welcome to join us. Questions may be directed to:
Chairman Suzanne Lemon (slemon46@yahoo.com).

Library Work Party – Sunday, March 20th, 9am – Noon

There’s another work party at the GFO library today for those of you who can come. There’s lots to do and we’d love to have your help. Doors open at 9 and work usually wraps up around noon. Some people come for just an hour or so and you’re welcome to do the same. Any time you can share is valuable. Hope to see you there.

Family Tree Maker – Sunday, March 20th, 1pm – 3pm

Just a note to remind you about Sunday’s Family Tree Maker meeting. This month we will have guest, Nanci Remington, to give us an introduction to Legacy Family Tree. This top-rated software may be a good choice if you decide to move away from FTM. If you have not downloaded the free version to have a look, here is the link: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/
