Call to Volunteers
Feeling frustrated that you can’t find the microfilm reel you need to trace down Uncle John Douglas Saab’s donation land claim?
Wondering where all those beautiful Canadian books went to that were donated to the GFO this past summer?
Curious to learn more about how to accomplish German ancestry research, but don’t know what books might be out there?
Well, do we have a deal for you!
A great way to learn about the resources at the GFO Library is to volunteer some of your time (not much is needed, just an hour here and there will do) to help with…
▪ Cataloging – Pulling MARC records from the Library of Congress website; we’ll teach you how!
▪ Labeling – The microfilm collection especially needs help in this area; again, we’ll teach you how!
JOIN US EVERY SUNDAY from 9 AM to NOON, or until you’re sick of if, for the LIBRARY WORK PARTIES. Or email volunteer@gfo.org now!
Thank you for all you do!

What’s Happening this Week at the GFO?
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1st
Virginia Group 10am – noon
Research in Virginia can be difficult, with the complication of “burned counties”, as well as the ordinary difficulties of using historical documents. But it is not impossible. We discuss the history of Virginia and explore various methods to do sound genealogy research. We hope to foster collaboration among our many Virginia researchers and work on our varied research problems, our “brick walls”, together. Each month we will have a discussion or presentation on a topic related to our research. There will also be time each meeting for discussion, suggestions, and perhaps research on individual research. We’ll also explore the settlement of Kentucky, the Carolinas and Tennessee. Facilitors are: Judi Scott judiscot@gmail.com, and Carol Surrency lcsurr@gmail.com.
For more information, check out the Virginia Group’s blog HERE.
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 2nd
Library & Manuscripts Work Party
There’s another work party at the GFO library this Sunday! The Manuscripts Committee will still be working away, but the LIBRARY COMMITTEE really needs ALL HANDS ON DECK!! There’s lots of labeling to do and we’d love to have your help. Doors open at 9am and work usually wraps up around noon. Some people come for just an hour or so and you’re welcome to do the same. Any time you can share is valuable. Hope to see you there, and as always, thank you for all you do to keep our volunteer-run organization alive!!
