On February 18,2022, at 10AM on Zoom, Thomas MacEntee will present:

“Are You Ready for the 1950 Census?”

If you are new to genealogy in the past 9 years you’ve never lived through the release of a new U.S. Census. If you’ve been at it longer than that you know it hasn’t always been a smooth process at the outset. Either way, you are probably anxious to learn what has happened to some of those folks you traced to the 1940 Census.

The release is scheduled to happen in less than 2 months, on April 1, 2022. It will likely be some months after that before the major online genealogy services have indexed the data so that you can find 1950 census information as easily as you can now search other online data. So, join us and get up to speed on how and why the 1950 US Census form is radically different than pervious forms, and how you can go about accessing the data immediately on and after the release date.

Thomas will cover how you can prepare now to hit the ground running on April 1.

Claire Smith will be presenting “Are You Really My Ancestor?”

A matching name isn’t enough to prove a relationship, especially if you have a common surname. In this session you’ll learn what it takes to prove a lineage, and how to handle conflicting information or multiple potential matches. We’ll explore cases that illustrate how to deal with these issues.

Claire has spent more than 20 years in genealogy research. We know her and her work quite well. You see, she used to live in these parts and is a past president, mentor, and webmaster for our society.

Nicka Smith is a professional photographer, speaker, host, consultant, and documentarian with more than 20 years of experience as a genealogist. She has extensive experience in African genealogy, and reverse genealogy, and is expert in genealogical research in the Northeastern Louisiana area, and in researching enslaved communities.

The topic for the BIGS Monthly Meeting will be “Finding Your Immigrant Ancestors”,  presented by Claire Smith of Massachusetts, formerly of Bainbridge Island, and one of the founding members of BIGS. We all have immigrant ancestors, whether they came in Colonial times or more recently. We’ll be looking at strategies for tracking down their places of origin, finding out whether records exist, where to find them and what they can tell you.
