June’s GEN Talk – Church Records with Harold Hinds

Church

That’s right! We’ve rebranded the Monthly Meetings, and will now be referring to them as the-all-new, oh-so-snazzy GEN Talks!
Church Records : Their Location and Value for Family Historians
Saturday, June 18th, starting at 2:30pm, the wonderful Harold Hinds will be giving a presentation on how to utilize all those pesky church records everyone’s always talking about.

Was your ancestor church-going? If so, with what church were they affiliated? Where might that church’s records be located? What might you expect to find of value in those records?

This presentation will follow the Annual Meeting. Hey! And don’t forget your handy-dandy, helpful HAND OUT to bring to the session.

Hey! How old’s your map?
Conducting genealogical research is a lot about understanding what the world looked like when your ancestors were alive. xkcd’s recently posted a wonderful guide to knowing how old a map is that you might be struggling with in the course of your research. Don’t be afraid to hold down the “Ctrl” key (“command” for Mac-users) and tap the “+” key (up in the top right-hand corner of your keyboard) to magnify the image so you can follow the “yes-no” trail.
Texas Obituaries Indexes
Check this out! You won’t believe the number of amazing genealogy and local history resources the McKinney Public Library System website has available.

From vital statistics indexes, to obituary indexes for 1884 through 1999, to more contemporary indexes of births, engagements, and marriages found in the local McKinney newspapers for 1980 to 1993, as well as an obituary index for 2000 to current.
Digi News
Genealogical research is becoming easier and more accessible by the day, especially with projects such as Oregon Digital Newspapers website, which features over 140 newspaper titles from all over the state of Oregon. The articles, all pre-1923, are available for word-level searches online HERE.

Who’s the GFO Star this month?! That’s right, it’s our very own Liz Porter!

Liz

Liz Porter has taken on the HUGE task of updating the OPALS system by entering all our periodicals into the database, making the system more user friendly – Liz has become our periodicals expert! She learned the catalog and task so quickly! While Sarah and Laurel were unavailable, she learned to create labels to keep things moving. Her work is very accurate – and she has such a sweet disposition.

Thank you, Liz!

Note from the Editor: GFO Stars can be nominated by any of our patrons, visitors, or members. Simply fill out a nomination slip by the front door of the Library and add your nominee to the box on the wall above the donations jar.

Digital Library? Prince William, is that really you??
FREE ONLINE ACCESS TO PRE-1918
PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY DEEDS is now available at this LINK.

You can retrieve PDF images of documents as early as 1731. Please remember that there are a number of significant gaps in Prince William deeds prior to 1865, as a result of the Civil War.

Those gaps may be overcome by using rent rolls, land tax lists, loose papers, court orders, and an old index. The latter item, Prince William County Deeds Index, 1731-1827, compiled by Charlotte Cain, is available at http://eservice.pwcgov.org/library/digitalLibrary/ in addition to several early tax lists transcribed by Greg Mason.

Ron Turner’s website contains many collections of Prince William loose papers, including documents from lost deed books. http://www.pwcvirginia.com/pwcvabookspublishedworks.htm.

Interviewing for Oral Histories Class – June 5th

Jewish3

Family history is often about gathering oral histories and stories from family members, and the Jewish Genealogical Society of Oregon is here to help!
Description: The Oral History Project is a key part of the OJMCHE’s mission to preserve and present the history of Oregon’s Jewish community The central goal is to develop a community oral history archive that provides a chronicle of the experiences of the Jews of Oregon. The project began by documenting the lives of the former residents of South Portland in the 1970s. Efforts have also included the testimonies of Holocaust survivors and liberators of death camps. Several focused efforts are currently underway to collect multiple histories from within particular geographic or communal areas throughout the state.

Bio: Anne LeVant Prahl, the Curator of Collections at the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education, has been working in collections management since 1987. She began doing oral history by interviewing former members of Texas’ Black gospel quartets for the Texas Music Museum as part of her masters work in anthropology at the University of Texas. In Oregon, as part of her position of curator, she runs the oral history program for the museum, training interviewers, identifying interview subjects, and maintaining the collection of nearly 700 oral histories.

The meeting starts at 11 AM, June 5th.

SPECIAL VENUE
Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education
1953 NW Kearney St.
Portland OR 97209
Phone: 503.226.3600

There is no cost for this program. A donation to the JGSO or OJMCHE would be appreciated.

SATURDAY, MAY 7th
Virginia Group 10am – noon

The history of land transactions is Kentucky is a complex one. Land was awarded/sold for a variety of reasons, including bounty land for the French and Indian War and preemption warrants for those who first settled Kentucky without proper authority to claim the land. This all led to fights over the land which lasted for decades and provide us with a great deal of information if we know where to look. We’ll discuss the numerous types of original land claims, where to locate the documents, and where the land was for each type of claim. Coordinators are Judi Scott (judiscot@gmail.com) and Carol Surrency (lcsurr@gmail.com).

German Group 1pm – 3pm

The German Interest Group was formed in the spring of 2011. It is intended to be a source of information and inspiration for anyone with German speaking ancestors. One goal is to provide information on a variety of topics related to Germanic history and migration. We also will provide time for members to share their research journeys and connect with others who may be researching the same region or time period.

Calling All Volunteers, Saturday, April 30, 2016!

LAundry

Have an hour to spare to help us spruce up the GFO Library this Saturday?
We could use a few helping hands on Saturday, April 30, 2:30 p.m. to spiff-up and clean the GFO Library in preparation for a special event taking place on Sunday, May 1. What are we talking about? Spending about 1 hour or so doing some moving and re-arranging of tables and chairs, vacuuming, dusting, and table and chair surface cleaning.

If you can help, please shoot Cathy Lauer an e-mail at catlauer@comcast.net and let her know!

And as always, thank you for all you do. Your contributions are what keep the GFO’s doors open each year!
