Discussion and examples of several tools that are currently available to assist you in using your DNA results to advance your genealogy research.  Tools that will be discussed will be DNA Painter, GEDmatch, Ancestry’s matches and groups, as well as ThruLines.

Do you have matches on Ancestry that do not have a tree or the tree is private?  We will walk through how you can use the data with others to help identify the possible relationship/DNA connection.

Heritage Quest Research Library February class information

Winona I. Laird is a Professional Genealogist.  She is a member of APG, NGS, FGS and a past President of South King County Gen Society as well as a member of several other Gen Societies. Winona is a member of the Mary Fell Stevenson Chapter, NSDAR and is the Registrar for the Chapter.  She is also the owner of the Genealogy Education Center in Kent, WA.  
Winona began her genealogy research when she was a small child. What began as a class project became a lifelong journey to find and write the stories of her ancestors.

Judy has been doing genealogy off and on for over 30 years. She has completed several formal education programs and holds genealogy certificates from National Institute for Genealogical Studies and Boston University.  Judy also holds a business degree from Washington State University.  
Judy has memberships in several genealogy societies and is the current Bookstore Manager for Heritage Quest Research library. She is also a Board member for TPCGS.

Heritage Quest Research Library Beginning DNA Class

Beginning DNA for Genealogists Getting down to the basics.  In this presentation, we will look at all types of DNA that are currently being used for genealogical purposes.  The inheritance patter of each will be reviewed.  Identify basic information that should be provided by all testing companies.  The purpose of the “admixture” will be explained.  We will also explain why your admixture percentages change from time to time.  
The remainder of the time will be OPEN for questions.
 
Taught by our Book Store Manager, Judy Line
Judy has been doing genealogy off and on for over 30 years.  She has completed several formal education programs and holds several certificates for genealogy from the National Institute for Genealogical Studies, and Boston University.  In addition, she has a business degree from Washington State University.  She has completed DNA courses presented by Blaine Bettinger and Diahan Southard.  Although not an expert, she has a good grasp on the concepts.  
Judy has written articles for local genealogy newsletters and publications.  She has also lectured on genealogical subjects, such as Newspapers, DNA and Documentation.  
She is a member of: Ohio Genealogical Association, Lake County Genealogical Association, Tacoma-Pierce County Genealogical Society (TPCGS), Utah Genealogical Association, NEHGS, NGS and others.  Judy is currently a member of the HQRL Management Team as Book Store Manager and is a member of the TPCGS Board.

Tina Beaird is the owner of Tamarack Genealogy and is a Genealogy & Local History librarian at the Plainfield Public Library in Plainfield, IL. She holds a Masters of Library and Information Science degree with a specialization in Archives/Preservation from Dominican University. Tina has won multiple research and digitization grants to preserve and digitize historic documents and photographs.
Digging In and Opening Up: How To Get The Most Out Of Your Family Interviews.
Are you interested in interviewing your family, but don’t know where to start? Tina will show you how to set up an oral history interview, what equipment to use, and the types of questions to ask. We have added the HQRL STORE to our webpage.  It’s a quick and easy way to sign up for our ZOOM Classes.
  Head to our webpage at hqrl.com. 
On the LEFT SIDE of the page you will see a list of options.  
SCROLL down the list to HQRL Store
CLICK on HQRL Store to open
Choose ZOOM/HQRL Classes and click to open
Choose which class you’re interested in and ADD TO CART.  You will be taken to Order Information page.  Here you can continue shopping, change the number of people attending or remove a class or empty your cart. This page also calculates the charges that will be made.  You may now CLICK on CHECKOUT.
If you are logged into the HQRL website as a member, your information will be automatically entered.  If not, you will need to enter your contact information on the Order Form.  We will then be able to contact you if there are any changes to the scheduled event.  
NEXT, choose your payment method.
When you CHECK the small box, a CODE # will appear, enter it in the required Box.  
CLICK on PLACE ORDER. You will receive an Order/Confirmation number and our Education Coordinator will receive your registration. 
To complete your ORDER, you must CLICK the “BUY NOW” button to make your payment.

Heritage Quest Research Library Needs Volunteers

We’re OPEN 6 days a week! But we need your help!  Now that many of us have received our COVID Vaccines, we’re ready to move forward and get back into Genealogy. However we can’t do it without you! Our Librarians have worked hard to keep our doors open and we have done so with a very small group of volunteers.  We’re unable to add hours if we don’t have the manpower.  Are you willing to give just 4 to 6 hours per week to help us?  Please call Susan, our Volunteer Coordinator, at: 253-351-6044
