Only a few days are left for three representatives from Eastern Washington Genealogical Society to receive a discount on registration for the NGS Virtual Family History Conference, 17−21 May 2021. After 15 March, the price of registration for NGS 2021 Live! and On-Demand! will increase $50 across the various packages. To qualify for the early-bird discount, you must register online by 15 March.

Join us on Wednesday and Thursday, 19‒20 May, for NGS’s premier two-day virtual conference event― NGS 2021 Live!. Speakers include two award-winning authors, Dani Shapiro, author of Inheritance, and Ric Murphy, author of Arrival of the First Africans in Virginia. Other nationally recognized speakers will join them, including Barbara Vines Little, the keynote speaker for the opening session, Eric Grundset, Thomas W. Jones, Janice Lovelace, Elizabeth Shown Mills, Judy Russell, Craig Scott, and more. The two-day event also features the announcement of winners for NGS awards; the newest genealogical products and services from exhibitors in our virtual expo hall; and drawings for exciting genealogy-related prizes.

In addition to NGS 2021 Live!, we offer a choice of either a twenty or forty lecture package on-demand. Those who purchase a package may choose from more than eighty-five on-demand sessions available for viewing starting in June. Program content includes twenty-one bonus lectures provided by conference sponsors and sponsoring organizations.

NGS will host additional events throughout the week for NGS member societies and organizations.

Tuesday, 18 May: NGS presents the debut of the SLAM! Idea Showcase, included in all NGS 2021 Live! packages, which highlights creative and innovative projects or programs by societies, libraries, archives, and museums (SLAMs). The deadline to submit a Video Poster Session is also 15 March.

Friday, 21 May: The week ends with Focus on Societies on Friday, an all-day event devoted to presentations offering expert advice for society leaders on managing and growing their genealogical or historical society. There is a group rate of $100 for up to five society leaders.

Finally, take advantage of the discounted Early-Bird registration fee, plus member discounts, when you sign up for the Virtual Family History Conference by 15 March 2021. As you know, the National Genealogical Society is going fully virtual for the 2021 NGS Family History Conference. As a member organization of NGS, this is a really fantastic opportunity for your genealogy society, library, or organization to have a virtual exhibit this year. While the pandemic makes it difficult to deliver the type of expo experience we are all used to, we are doing everything we can to provide great opportunities to highlight your organization and its programs and services to our attendees.

We will do all we can to connect you and your organization to our attendees. The conference will be packed with engaging events and sessions for experienced genealogists as well as first-timers. NGS Delegate Council Virtual Kickoff Workshop

Dear Friends of Washington State Genealogical Society,

The NGS Delegate Council Virtual Kickoff Workshop is the first opportunity for NGS member organization delegates to work and learn together. The workshop is an opportunity to collaborate with peers from other genealogy organizations and learn more about the role of a delegate.

Scheduled for 17 May 2021, it is one of several new components of our week long virtual NGS 2021 Family History Conference focused on genealogy organizations.

Each NGS member organization is invited to “send” its delegate to the workshop which will be held entirely online. There is no fee to register. Delegates will receive their invitations soon.

The Virtual Kickoff Workshop is a time to learn about the Delegate Council–the new advisory body for genealogical organizations that are members of NGS. The Delegate Council provides a unique perspective and guidance to the NGS Board of Directors on genealogy and family history matters, and how NGS can best serve genealogy and family history organizations.

It’s also time to get to work! Delegates will share ideas and thoughts on genealogy organization management while charting a course for how the Council will work together.

The workshop will: Provide information about the structure and function of the Delegate Council Facilitate understanding of Delegate Council member roles Prepare members for effective collaboration on the Delegate Council. If you are unsure of your organization’s NGS membership status or its assigned delegate, please contact membership@ngsgenealogy.org.

NGS will record some portions of the workshop and make them available to member organizations on its website.

Registration for the NGS 2021 Family History Conference opened 1 February 2021 at 1:00 p.m. (EST). Plans for our forty-third annual conference include a full week of virtual events* for individuals, societies, and organizations 17-21 May 2021.

Monday, 17 May, begins the week with a Kickoff Workshop for the NGS Delegate Council, the new advisory committee for member organizations including yours. This inaugural workshop will focus on helping delegates understand their role within NGS. Please make sure the name of Eastern Washington Genealogical Society’s delegate is on file with NGS.

Tuesday, 18 May, presents the debut of the SLAM! Idea Showcase, which highlights creative and innovative projects or programs by societies, libraries, archives, and museums (SLAMs). The day will also include presentations that assist librarians and others who serve genealogists.

In the coming days, we’ll be sending you a “call for proposals” for the SLAM! Idea Showcase.

The week ends with Focus on Societies on Friday, 21 May. This all-day event is devoted to presentations offering expert advice for genealogy society leaders—on managing and growing your genealogical or historical society. The day will feature fourteen session topics including Jill Morelli’s kickoff with ideas and opportunities based on lessons learned during the pandemic, and the Society Shoutout.

A Toast to the Future! FGS Membership Approves Decision to Merge with NGS
The boards of the Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) and the National Genealogical Society (NGS) are thrilled to announce that the FGS membership has voted to approve the merger with NGS. The final tally of eligible voters expressed unanimous support for the merger.
“We are so excited about the bright future of the combined organization that is the new NGS. During the process of preparing for this merger, we have seen a unified commitment and huge enthusiasm of the leaders for serving family history organizations,” said Faye Stallings, FGS President.
“We are so thrilled to be ready to welcome all of the FGS membership to the new NGS,” said Ben Spratling, NGS President. “This merger is all about building a strong, vibrant community of family history organizations that assist people as they discover their ancestors, connect with their relatives, and learn their family stories. This is an exciting time to be part of the genealogy community.”
While there are still several steps before the merger is effective on 1 October 2020, the vote was a big milestone on the way to creating the “new” NGS. The next big step is the NGS election, which will take place from noon (CDT) on Friday, 28 August 2020, and close at 5:45 p.m. (CDT) on Tuesday, 1 September 2020.
The slate of candidates includes several candidates with connections to FGS. Cheri Hudson Passey, the FGS Secretary, is the candidate for the new NGS role of Vice President of Society & Organization Management. Current FGS Board member Ed Donakey is nominated as Secretary of NGS, and current FGS President Faye Jenkins Stallings is nominated as a director. Former FGS President David Rencher, who replaced Mike Hall on the NGS Board earlier this year, is also again nominated. Three other first-time nominees to the NGS Board are Colleen Robledo Greene of California; Marlis Humphrey of Florida; and Andre Kearns of Washington, DC.

NGS 2020 Conference Salt Lake City

The National Genealogical Society will hold its annual Family History Conference, Echoes of Our Ancestors, in Salt Lake City, May 20-23, 2020.

Pre-registration is open until April 17, and there is an early-bird discount of $35 for registrations postmarked / submitted by March 17th. On-site registration will begin on Tuesday, May 19th.

There will also be special student pricing available for the conference.

FGS & NGS Plan to Merge

Today is a landmark day in the history of the Federation of Genealogical Societies. We are excited to tell you that this morning, at our national conference in Washington D. C., we announced our intent to merge with the National Genealogical Society.

The Federation was formed in 1976 in order to provide support to genealogical and historical societies. Key objectives during the past four decades have been to: promote the study of genealogy, stimulate the activities of state and local organizations, provide resources that enable genealogical organizations to succeed in pursuing their missions, advocate for the preservation of records. The intended merger with NGS will enhance our ability to support societies and offer services that will help strengthen them and help them to adapt and thrive in a rapidly changing, technology-driven, volunteer-challenged environment.

Preserve the Pensions Project You may be wondering how the merger will affect the Preserve the Pensions project. FGS launched the Preserve the Pensions project in 2010 and raised more than $3 million to digitize and make freely available the pension files from the War of 1812. Fundraising for the project was completed in 2016.

The Preserve the Pensions project will continue under its existing arrangements. FGS has an agreement with NARA for the preservation and digitization of the records and Ancestry is coordinating the digitization process. The funds for completing this project are set aside in restricted accounts.
Conferences We also wanted to let you know that plans are still in place to hold our annual conference in Kansas City, Missouri, in 2020. Starting in 2021, the combined organization will hold one conference with four full days of genealogical lectures and a fifth day dedicated to society management topics.

I believe this merger will serve our members and the genealogical community by improving the support of both individuals and societies in the pursuit of genealogical excellence.
