TIP OF THE WEEK – SALT LAKE TRIBUNE ONLINE 133 YEARS OF THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE are now keyword searchable and available to the the public online thanks to a partnership between the University of Utah – J. Willard Marriott Library, Newspapers.com, a division of Ancestry, and The Salt Lake Tribune. The site now covers the years 1871-2004 of the Salt Lake Tribune. There are over 6.7 million pages on this site and another 2 million pages will come online in the next two to three years.
The Tribune issues can be accessed through Utah Digital Newspapers, a collaborative project based at the J. Willard Marriott Library since 2001. Powerful searching options allow users to find terms in combinations or terms that appear in proximity to one another. WRITING CONTEST WINNERS Congratulations to the winners of last fall’s “They Survived” writing contest!
Thank you to all who submitted pieces relating stories of challenging times, perseverance, and survival. Three submissions in particular stood out to our judges and they will be showcased in the upcoming Journal.
First place goes to Scott Kampen with his story about the Children’s Blizzard of 1888 in Dakota Territory. Scott will receive free entry to the SGS seminar of his choice as his prize.
The second place piece is by Julia Marconi, whose story includes the sinking of the SS Eastland in the Chicago River on July 24, 1915. Julia will receive a renewal membership to SGS.
And third place goes to Edward Swierczewski, Jr. who presents his family lines as seen through the lens of survivorship. Edward will receive a copy of “Walking with Your Ancestors” by Melinda Kashuba.
We hope these works will inspire and encourage you to sharpen your own pencils and get writing!
THE 1890 SEATTLE CENSUS SUBSTITUTE In the Fall of 2011, SGS formed a coordinating committee headed by member Chuck Richards to investigate the viability of producing an 1890 US Census substitute for the Seattle area. After several ups and downs, and the efforts of many SGS members, this database is now available on the SGS website. SGS is still working on a online searchable interface for this data, but for now it can be accessed via a research request; the same way you place a research request for the King County Court Cases Index (KC3I) and VFW members card databases. On the SGS website home page’s left-side menu, click on “Research and Databases”. Then you will see “Research Services” in the sub-menu that drops down; click on that “Research Services. Our plan is to have this database’s search function operational for our membership within the next few months. This census substitute is the result of many hours of work by many SGS volunteers. The initial project committee was chaired by Chuck Richards and included Chuck Richards, Jackie Lawson, Lynn Magnuson, Sue Melville, Mary Kircher Roddy, and Jan Walker. Over the many years it took to compile this dataset and prepare it for use, the following individuals helped in the effort: Dona Bubelis, Bruce Finlayson, Lyndall Foulds, Chris Hanley, Tina Hollingsworth, Kate Johnston, Kerri Keil, Michelle Khuon, JoAnne King, Donna Koerker, Marilyn McGuire, Virgil Morgan, Nancy C. Parks, Emily Phillips, Winifred Price, Ginny Sommarstrom, Judy Tomassene, Doug Whalley, Clarice Wilson, Charlotte Wixon, and Ann Wright.

SGS MEMBERSHIP MEETING NOTICE The next SGS Membership Meeting will take place Saturday, June 11, 2022, at 12:30 PM. This will be a virtual meeting via Zoom. The results of the upcoming SGS election will be announced. The Second Saturday presentation by Elizabeth Swanay O’Neal will follow at 1:00 PM.
Preregistration is required. After registering, you will be able to join the meeting immediately from the registration window. You will also receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. One registration will work for both the membership meeting and the Second Saturday presentation.

This issue’s tip came out of this month’s Second Saturday Speaker Series presentation by Carolyn Schott. There is a Facebook Group called Genealogical Translations and their purpose is just that, the translation of genealogy documents only. It is a private group so you must ask to join. This group might be the answer to your prayers. Here’s how they describe themselves: “Genealogical Translations was established to provide amateur family researchers a place to have their genealogical documents translated. We are a global volunteer group whose members help other members by offering free translation of their genealogical documents such as vital records, postcards, obituaries, and more, in languages including – Dutch, French, German, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Latin, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and many others!

WHAT DOES THE SGS ARCHIVE COMMITTEE DO? Would you like to play detective? Do you like history and family stories? 1950 US CENSUS COMMUNITY PROJECT The 1950 US Census is out! It was released to the public on April 1, 2022. As you all know, indexing is what makes any search of a database work. This 1950 US Census was indexed by machines – automated optical recognition. Machines, like people, are not perfect so FamilySearch is inviting humans to review the data created by the machines and fix any errors. You’ll be asked to review names, family members, or census header information.

Here’s a tip came from a fellow SGS member for everyone interested in land records of Maryland.
All land records for Maryland are available online from the Maryland State Archives at this URL: http://www.mdlandrec.net
Use of this site is free, but you will need to create an account. Here’s the blurb from their main home page expressing their intent:
“The Maryland Judiciary, the 24 elected Court Clerks of Maryland and the Maryland State Archives have joined in partnership to provide up to date access to all verified land record instruments in Maryland. This service is currently being provided free to all those interested in testing the system. Users are encouraged to provide feedback and inform the Maryland State Archives of any problems encountered.”
Once you have arrived at the home page, use the drop-down menu in the upper left part of the page to select your county of interested, and you’re off and running.
While these same land records are available via FamilySearch, most of them fall under that “restricted access” requiring you to be at a FHC or affiliated library to access the image. From the MDLANDREC website, you can view and download Maryland land records from the comfort of your home.
SECOND SATURDAY: EXPANDING GERMAN RESEARCH BEYOND ANCESTRY & FAMILY SEARCH SATURDAY, APRIL 9, 2022 1:00 PM-2:30 PM VIA ZOOM Our presenter at the Second Saturday event coming up will be Carolyn Schott. Carolyn is the new chairperson for our SGS German Interest Group that meets on the 3rd Saturday of each month from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm via Zoom. Carolyn has been researching her German ancestors for more than 20 years, following their wanderings through Eastern Europe before arriving in America. She is a former board member of the Germans from Russia Heritage Society (GRHS), a founder of the Black Sea German Research Community, and author of the book “Visiting Your Ancestral Town”. Her writing has received several awards from the International Society of Family History Writers and Editors.
The presentation on April 9 will help German researchers learn about some powerful resources beyond the “standards.” These include the online Meyers Gazetteer, Archion, Matricula, and Compgen.de. Each resource will be discussed and attendees will be instructed on how to navigate them even if you don’t speak German.
If you plan to attend, please pre-register. If you can’t make the Second Saturday presentation, you can still meet Carolyn the next Saturday, April 16. She will be leading the SGS German Interest Group.
SGS LIBRARY DESK VOLUNTEERS DESPERATELY NEEDED
Now that we have moved into our beautiful new space, we are anxious to have members and visitors come see and use our facility. Unfortunately, we are seriously short of volunteers to man the front desk.
Desk Volunteer duties are simple—you open the SGS library at 10:00 AM, tend the till, greet guests, and give tours. Then you close the Library at 3:00 PM. In-depth knowledge of genealogy is not necessary.
As a benefit, you will be able to use the Library’s resources, such as subscriptions to Ancestry, Fold3, Newspapers.com, American Ancestors, the FamilySearch affiliate library capacity, books, journals, etc. Work on your own genealogy while you are there.
Volunteering in this capacity usually requires minimal effort, while it is a very important contribution. Please consider our desperate plea. If you can help, contact Amanda Bennett at desk@seagensoc.org. Thank you very much.

TIP OF THE WEEK – WEBINAR ON USING PERSI BY ALLEN COUNTY PUBLIC LIBARY Context is what changes genealogy from a collection of names and dates to our ancestors’ stories, and stories will get the attention of our otherwise disinterested family members. This webinar conducted by Allen County Public Library, Fort Wayne, Indiana addresses how to use the newly reconstituted PERSI database, searching by location to discover context for your genealogy research.

NANCY HEVLY 1931-2022 Sadly, on March 1, lifelong Seattleite, award winning journalist, and longtime SGS member, Nancy Hevly, passed away.
Nancy was a SGS member and donor for 25 years. She also was an active SGS volunteer most of that time; first serving on the Publications Committee, later as Chair of the Nominating Committee, and, since 2014, on the Archive Committee and as its Chair. She was a SGS Library Trustee from 2018-2021.
In retirement, Nancy earned her certificate in genealogy from the University of Washington. Prior to retirement, she had a long, distinguished career at the Seattle P-I, beginning as a Society reporter and ending as an editorial page writer and editor.
Those who knew and worked with Nancy at SGS describe her the same way, “She was a lovely person, someone you could count on, and she will be missed.” Our condolences to her family.

TIP OF THE WEEK – GFO VIRTUAL OPEN HOUSE 2022 The Genealogical Forum of Oregon will be hosting another Virtual Open House this year. Last year they filled over 2,000 virtual seats with attendees from 26 states and five countries. This Open House will run from Saturday, March 26, 2022 – Saturday, April 2, 2022. Twenty-three free presentations are planned. This year includes presentations focusing on African American, Canadian, Irish, German, Latino, Polish, and British heritages. With something for everyone, topics will include: A full day of DNA classes for beginners. Getting Help Solving Tough Research Problems. Online Newspapers. How and Why to Record Your Oldest Relative’s Life Story The Modern U.S. Census including the nearly released 1950 census No fees, but you do need to pre-register for each presentation.
You are free to copy articles to any non-commercial web site or message board or printed publication you wish. Don’t bother to ask permission, just do it.
