DIGGING DEEP : DOING HISTORICAL RESEARCH
The Puget Sound Regional Branch of the Washington State Archives, in Bellevue, WA, is offering the class Digging Deep from 11:00 am- 2:00 pm on October 19, 2019. Designed for teachers, students, beginning genealogists, local heritage volunteers and others interested in exploring the past, you’ll get practical advice and learn the basic steps for gathering the information that you will need to investigate and interpret a historical topic. In this class, discover:

·       What historical sources are & how to use them
·       What primary sources are & aren’t
·       What secondary sources are & why they’re useful
·       How to use the library system in your research
·       How to use archival collections
·       How to find and use reliable online resources
.       How to properly cite your sources
·       How to use information from different sources

Seattle Genealogical Society Tip of the Week

TIP OF THE WEEK – FIX THAT INDEX!
  It’s finally here, and Family Search members are excited for the newest enhancement that allows for correction to names in the indexes on Family Search. If and when you find it necessary to correct an index record, you will be asked to provide an explanation for the correction and given a choice of two reasons :   

  • Indexed incorrectly  (such as misread of the original document) 

                              -or-

  • Wrong in the original document (such as nickname used)

Keep in mind that your correction does not override the information already on FamilySearch. Instead, you are providing additional information. The old index information remains intact. Your change, as well as the original information, are both searchable; therefore, allowing other members to more readily locate these persons. There could end up being several changes for the same record, so please edit carefully since multiple changes will muddy the waters.

URGENT REQUEST FOR FALL RAFFLE DONATIONS!
We are requesting donations of goods or services for the Fall Seminar raffle (Oct 5th).  In the past, we have gratefully received items such as DNA kits, genealogy books, jewelry, ballet tickets, quilts, and genealogy tools.  Use your imagination.  Proceeds from the raffle support the SGS library, and donations are tax deductible.  Donated items can be sent or brought to the SGS library.  Please also send an email message to volunteers@seattlegenealogicalsociety.org telling us of your donation prior to mailing or delivering the item so we will be on the alert for its delivery.   Thank you for your support!
VOLUNTEER NEEDED   SGS has a policy to donate duplicate items in our library to other libraries that need them. We need a volunteer to locate libraries in need of these items by emailing the library and asking if they need the duplicates that we have available. The volunteer’s responsibilities would entail emailing, picking up and packaging of the items for shipping, and returning the packages to SGS.  This volunteer will work primarily from home. We will train interested person with more explanation of what is needed to be done. Please contact Linda Fitzgerald at the SGS Library (206) 522-8658 or  library@seattlegenealogicalsociety.org.

FREE ACCESS TO OLD YEARBOOKS 
Labor Day Weekend special! Ancestry has an indexed collection of middle school, junior high, high school, and college yearbooks from across the United States; yearbooks dated from 1900-1999. They are offering free access to this collection until Monday, September 2, 2019, 11:59 pm ET. With over 450,000 yearbooks and 62 million pages, see what you can find here.
  Speaking of yearbooks, do you know SGS has an extensive collection of Seattle area yearbooks? We have Roosevelt High School from 1923-1988.  We also have Franklin, Garfield, Queen Anne, and West Seattle High Schools, as well as University of Washington “Tyee” and Eckstein Jr High. Come browse through them. Our library is closed over Labor Day Weekend, but will reopen on Tuesday, September 3, 2019.

  Registration for the newest SGS online class opens September 1st! 
  Write as you go is a method of writing reports efficiently and accurately. SGS is calling their write as you go online course “WAYtoGO!” By focusing your attention on a single research question coupled with other techniques learned in the program, this two session course will improve the efficiency of your report writing while also increasing your accuracy and confidence in the final product. Brick wall problems, client, and research reports benefit from this approach.   WOMEN’S SUFFRAGE IN YOUR FAMILY HISTORY
Next year the Seattle Genealogical Society will commemorate the 100th anniversary of Women’s Suffrage with educational events including lectures, workshops, articles, a resource guide, and an exhibit in our library.
 
What were your grandmothers’ or great-grandmothers’ lives like a century ago? 

Join us on a path of exploration.  Learn to access and use genealogical tools and techniques to successfully discover your female ancestors and write their stories. Through genealogy and family history, learn about the expanding civic role of women, explore the changes in women’s lives and that of their families and communities, culminating in the passage of the 19th Amendment.

In the Fall of 2020, SGS plans to publish a special edition of our Journal of the Seattle Genealogical Society with articles describing the changing roles of women’s lives from 1880-1920, especially in Washington state. We hope to hear the stories of your female ancestors; whether they resided in Washington state, or elsewhere. If your are interested in sharing a story, photo, or a genealogical gem, please contact Heidi Mair, Director of Volunteers, at : volunteers@seattlegenealogicalsociety.org

** Volunteer needed. We need someone willing to work from home to research libraries that might need copies of our SGS journals or newsletters. The volunteer will need to lookup contact information for the libraries, then contact them to see if they need a copy of any of our past newsletters or journals. If they do, the volunteer will pick up the item(s) from the SGS Library Committee, package and return the item(s) to the SGS Library, where they will be shipped out.   WAKAMATSU PILGRIMAGE
Coming up is the second biennial pilgrimage to the site of the first large settlement of Japanese in America. A national and state historic landmark, the Wakamatsu Tea and Silk Farm Colony, Placerville, CA,  was established June 8, 1869 as the first Japanese colony in the U.S. It is also the birthplace of first Japanese American, and the gravesite of the first Japanese woman buried in the U.S., Okei Ito. Seattle Genealogical Society Tip of the Week

TIP OF THE WEEK –
FREE MILITARY GENEALOGY WORKSHOP    On Sunday, September 15, 2019, at 1:00 PM, the Puget Sound Navy Museum in Bremerton, WA is offering this free workshop that is open to the public.  

“Uncover your Sailor’s story through military records! Join our curator to learn about researching military service records, with a focus on records available from the National Archives” is how the workshop is described on their Facebook Page.  

While the workshop is free, an RSVP is requested. Please RSVP on Facebook, or to Curator.PSNM@Navy.mil or (360) 627-2452 by Friday, September 13, 2019. 
  The Puget Sound Navy Museum is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and interpreting the naval heritage of the Pacific Northwest for the benefit of the U.S. Navy and general public.

 VOLUNTEERS OF SPRING QUARTER
  Each quarter the Seattle Genealogical Society recognizes one volunteer as our volunteer of the quarter. Our volunteer for Spring 2019 Quarter is the entire SGS Website Team. 

This amazing team of volunteers have put together a fabulous website for the Seattle Genealogical Society. The Society hired ENS (Easy Net Sites) to build the website; however, ENS needed our people to assemble the content. This Team has worked many hours to get the basic structure, wording and content ready for the Easy Net Site company to do their work and release the website. The new Seattle Genealogical Society website can be found at: www.seagensoc.org

The SGS Website Team members are:

David Rimmer – SGS Director of Technology 

David was the team leader and Easy Net Sites liaison.

David has been researching his ancestors for 20 years and has been a member of Seattle Genealogical Society (SGS) for 10 years. Besides serving as our Director of Technology David has helped out with the Irish Festival twice and the Highland Games. His biggest success in genealogical research has been to get all his first cousins to take a DNA test, since all their parents are deceased and David is an only child.

Ann Wright: Webmaster 

Ann was responsible for technical support, the work plan, and organization.

Ann has been doing genealogy for many years and has been a member of SGS for 7 years. Ann has volunteered primarily in the Library and was Library Director from 2015-2018. In 2016, she became an assistant to the newly formed Director of Technology and continues to work in that capacity. Ann’s success in her research has been in finding an immigrant, Benjamin Thwing, who came to the US in 1639 and is an ancestor of Ann’s mother.

Christine Schomaker: SGS Director of Membership 

Membership is a major element of the new website.

Christine started doing her genealogy research about 60 years ago at the age of 8. She has been a Society member for 22 years. She has been busy as a volunteer for those 22 years acting as a Desk Volunteer, Director of Operations, Director of Library, Treasurer, Director of Membership, Seminar Book Sales, Webmaster, 2011 Website Committee, Seminar and Class Registrar.

Her genealogical experience has included many exciting “aha” moments. Several occurred while piecing together a documented, original lineage of her Virginia great-grandmother Octavia (Elliot) Harlan. She has made it back four generations to James Elliot (c1715-1783) of Wells and Brunswick, Maine, and continues to document a previously uncompiled genealogy of his descendants.
 
Julia Marconi: Former SGS Director of Publications

Julia was in charge of marketing, the look and feel of website, the style standards and acted as backup webmaster.

Julia has been pursuing her ancestors for many years. She has been a long-time member of SGS and has held the positions of President and Publications Director. She has been responsible for getting the Journal of the Seattle Genealogical Society assembled and published. She recently retired from publishing the SGS Journal, but still assists in the compilation of it.

Heidi Mair: SGS Director of Volunteers

Heidi was responsible for events, the calendar, and training.

Heidi has been researching her family for 50 years, but more intensely in the past 8 years. She has been a member of SGS for 2 years and has volunteered as Director of Volunteers, Outreach, Desk Volunteer, and Seminar; wherever she was needed. Heidi has written about her Ohio family and was published by the Ohio Genealogical Society last winter. Congratulations, Heidi. 

Janice Lovelace: SGS Director of Education 

The Classes, Events and Special Interest Groups sections on the website were the responsibilty of Janice. 

Janice has been doing genealogy since the early 1990s and has been an active SGS member for about 7 years. She served as VP for two years and is currently serving as Education Chair for her second year. For Janice, the most difficult research challenge, and the most rewarding, was being able to identify slaveholders for her maternal great-grandparents.

We are pleased to honor this Team as the Volunteer of the Quarter and really appreciate all the hard work they did to get the new website operational.
  TRACING PEOPLE THROUGH
TIME & SPACE USING TIMELINES  Most people are familiar with timelines from taking history in high school. Genealogists, however, can utilize this seemingly commonplace tool to very good effect in their research. Need to know how your ancestor got from one place to another? Trying to sort out several different individuals with the same name? Wanting to understand how your ancestor fit in with major and minor historical events? Come learn how timelines can help answer these and a number of other family history research questions!

Mary Kathyrn Kozy will be the presenter on this topic for our Second Saturday Speaker Series, September 14th, at the SGS Library, 1:00 pm-3:00 pm.

TIP OF THE WEEK –
HELP WITH YOUR OLD PHOTOS  

On our Seattle Genealogical Society Networking Group Facebook page, a member posted this question, “I’m wondering if there’s a safe process for bringing out what’s written on the back of old photograph cardboard stock that the photo was mounted on. Looks like maybe pencil”.  

Several members replied they have had luck scanning the back of the photograph at the highest resolution possible and then using a photo editing application to adjust the contrast and brightness, etc. Possibly with this technique, you will be able to make out what was written on the back of that precious old photograph.

DEADLINE EXTENDED FOR
 SGS FAMILY HISTORY WRITING CONTEST
  We admit we didn’t get very many submissions so we would like to extend the deadline for submission of your family history story to August 21, 2019. Here are the “rules”:
  1. 500 to 5000 words.
  2. Stories, poems etc. are all acceptable, but should be your original work. If the piece has been published before, the approval of that organization to re-publish by SGS is necessary (your responsibility to get). Items submitted in the previous SGS FHWC and not selected for publication can be reworked and resubmitted. The author retains the copyright in all cases.
  3. You do not need to be a member to submit. Board members of SGS are not allowed to submit, but former Board members are.
  4. Cite the facts, but since these are usually personal stories, there are few needed.
  5. Decision of the judges is final.
  6. Monetary prizes will be awarded to the top three submissions. Others may be selected for publication.   Submit to publications@seattlegenealogicalsociety.org by end of the day on August 21, 2019.

SGS Members – Log in at the new website to access exclusive SGS publications and databases, enter your family research names in the new SGS Surname Registry, and, if you haven’t already, renew your membership for 2019-20. 

Go to Members Home and log in to your account. If you have not logged in before, follow the instructions there under “Login Problems?”. You will need to get your login name and then set your password.

After logging in, you will see an expiration notice if you have not yet renewed. Go to Member Profile and click the green “Renew Membership” button. A dues invoice will be created that you may pay right away with your credit/debit card, or print out and mail with a check to SGS.

SGS SURNAME REGISTRY Have you ever wanted to collaborate with other SGS members? Have you wondered if another member has a similar research area?

Our new website has a great feature: SGS Member Surname Registry. The registry is viewable by both members and non-members, but only SGS members may add to the list.

Find the registry by selecting Research and Databases from the menuon the left side of the Home Page (https://seagensoc.org). From the list of databases, select #3. SGS Member Surname Registry. A new page will open with the surnames currently added to our growing database. You can view more details for any entry by selecting the “eye” icon, or you can message the member by selecting the email “envelope” icon. You will be routed to the Surname Inquiry Emailer. Follow the instructions to write a message on the secure website system. (We cannot guarantee that you will receive a response.)

SGS Members – When a researcher finds a matching name in the registry, they may send an email to you through the secure website system. They will not have access to your name and contact information unless you reply to their email. To add your research names to the registry go to Members Home and log in. Then open your Member Profile and go to the “Surnames” tab. Click on the “plus” icon to create a surname record. Create a separate record for each surname.
