Seattle Genealogical Society Tip of the Week

TIP OF THE WEEK –
ARE YOU MISSING PART OF THE eNEWS!

Attention GMAIL users. Have you noticed your eNews! seems to be cut-off abruptly? It will look as if there are paragraphs, feature articles, or photos missing. Well, GMAIL does what they call “trimming” of long emails (above a certain size in bytes, a unit of measure for digital information). This happened to the last issue of the eNews! and some readers were left a bit confused.

If you see  an ellipsis, three dots, hover over it with your cursor and you will see the message “See Trimmed Content”. Click on the ellipsis and the full eNews! will be revealed to you.

No matter what email service provider you use, a fool proof way to avoid “trimming” problems, omitted photos, and inadvertently missing large chunks of the eNews! , is to train yourself to always use the View it in your browser feature.  That is in the upper right hand corner of the eNews! directly after the question “Is this email not displaying correctly?”.

Try out the View it in your browser option on the last edition of the eNews! Use it on this current edition; then make a habit of using it. You’ll be glad you did.

SIRI NELSON,
VOLUNTEER OF THE SUMMER QUARTER

Each quarter, the Seattle Genealogical Society recognizes one volunteer as our Volunteer of the Quarter. Our Summer Volunteer of the Quarter is Siri Nelson, Chair of our Nominating Committee.

Siri Nelson has been a member of the Seattle Genealogical Society for several years, but her interest in genealogy and family history goes back to her childhood. She learned much about her family history from her parents. In 2013, Siri completed the Genealogy and Family History program at the University of Washington. This experience inspired her to deepen her research and led her to SGS. Siri’s research focuses upon Ireland, Norway and New England. Siri takes full advantage of SGS offerings – attending the Second Saturday Speaker Series, Fall and Spring Seminars, Special Interest Group Meetings, and using the online and in-library resources. She also enjoys the camaraderie of the other members, including sharing of information, tips and resources, and occasionally breaking through that brick wall.

A little over two years ago, Siri was asked to join the Nominating Committee. The Nominating Committee creates the slate of candidates for our April Board elections. This involves reaching out to members by phone, email and in-person to recruit our new Board members each year. Serving as the Chair of our Nominating Committee is a challenging role – Siri contacts many people to find the right match for each critical leadership position. She hopes more people will step up. Although demanding, volunteering on the Board does not have to be all-consuming. The benefits of serving in a leadership role at SGS are rewarding. Siri hopes people using SGS resources will continue to support the organization. If you are interested in serving on the Nominating Committee with Siri, or discussing a position on the Board next year, you may contact Siri at nominations@seattlegenealogicalsociety.org.

In addition to her time volunteering for SGS and attending our events, Siri takes classes in history and other related fields at the University of Washington. She enjoyed the course on Northwest history since her ancestors traveled along the Oregon Trail to settle in the Pacific Northwest. This summer she is taking Colonial American history.

Siri has a yellow lab puppy, Skadi (Norse goddess of hunting, winter and snow), keeping her busy. Siri also enjoys skiing.

Before retiring and devoting more of her time to genealogy, history and SGS, Siri worked for the US Army Corps of Engineers.

Thank you Siri, for your active involvement in the Seattle Genealogical Society and for your leadership role on our Nominating Committee.

It includes a brief history of the Panther Veteran’s Association with photos and then a long list of infantrymen that were part of the historic missions against Hitler during the war with Germany. As far as we know, the only other available copy is at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. This book has found a home in our rare book cabinet and is available for your inspection. Also on the schedule that Saturday, from 10:15 am-12:15 pm, is (FTM) the Family Tree Makers User Group. They will meet in this second Saturday time slot every other month – Sept 2018, Nov 2018, Jan 2019, Mar 2019 – the odd months. Reiley Kidd and Jess Ramey are leading this group.

Seattle Genealogical Society Tip of the Week

TIP OF THE WEEK –
A GREAT RESOURCE FOR WESTERN
NORTH CAROLINA RESEARCH: the BGSOTC

A terrific genealogical society, the Genealogical Society of Old Tryon County, has published abstracts of many of the surviving documents in western North Carolina. Tryon County was created in 1769 and in 1779 its name was changed to Lincoln County. While Old Tryon County no longer exists, it included the geographic area that is now Rutherford, Cleveland, Lincoln, and Gaston counties of North Carolina, and Cherokee and York Counties of South Carolina, plus portions of several NC and SC counties that border these counties – A LARGE AREA.

This wonderful society’s publication, Bulletin of the Genealogical Society of Old Tryon County (BGSOTC for short) began in 1973, and its issues contain abstracts of all types of records – wills, deeds, court records, family histories, etc. – from all of the counties listed above.

It gets better! They’ve created an every-name index for the issues of the BGSOTC from 1992 to the present, and placed it online at http://www.oldtryon.com/

If you have ancestors in this part of western NC or upper SC, check out this index. You can search for your ancestors from the comfort of home!

SGS has BGSOTC issues from 1998 to the present, so if you find one of your ancestors in the online index, the issue may well be in our collection.

DIGGING DEEPER WORKSHOP: THE GPS

The Genealogical Proof Standard, or GPS, serves as a guide to our genealogical work, but it is probably the most misunderstood of the many genealogical principles that apply to our everyday work. This intensive session will look at all five elements of the GPS, dissecting each one individually and then collectively to gain a better understanding of its application and benefit. Foundational vocabulary will be covered. This is an interactive workshop so bring a research question of your own to work on. You should be able to identify one individual with some known facts that make him/her unique in the world. This is a beta test workshop. We will stop in the middle of the session and have a debrief of the effectiveness of the exercises.

Mark your calendar. This workshop will take place at the SGS library on Sunday, August 19, 2018 from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm.

Seattle Genealogical Society Tip of the Week

TIP OF THE WEEK –
THE BEST SOURCE FOR FINDING
PROBATE CASES & DIVORCE RECORDS
IN KING COUNTY, 1881-1980

The King County Court Cases Index, 1881-1980 (KC3I, for short) is an SGS database, created by SGS volunteers a decade ago.

This database contains every divorce and every probate case that occurred in King County between 1881 and 1980.

So if you have roots in King County, be sure to check this database!  All you need to do is to request a search via our website; we typically respond within 24-48 hours.

See the SGS website at http://seattlegenealogicalsociety.org/kc3i for more information, or to complete a look-up request online. This service is free to current SGS members.

One caveat: Because of the source from which it was created, the SGS KC3I is a subset of the Superior Court Cases of King County. Our index was compiled using records collected by the Seattle branch of Chicago Title Company.  They were required by law to record every court case that might affect a person’s right to clear title of property. Thus our index includes all probate cases, divorces, and mental competency hearings occurring in King County Superior Court; it does not contain criminal cases, marriages, adoptions, or other types of cases that have no bearing on one’s right to clear title of property.

Remember, too, that this is an INDEX of cases, not the case records themselves; those reside at the King County Court Clerk’s office.

WASHINGTON STATE GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY
RECOGNIZES REILEY KIDD

Thirty local genealogical society members were honored as Outstanding Volunteers at the Washington State Genealogical Society Annual Meeting in Vancouver, WA, on May 26, 2018.

Congratulations to Reiley Kidd, who was nominated by the Seattle Genealogical Society as our recipient of a 2018 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award! Reiley was selected for his steadfast support of numerous SGS projects.

Reiley has been a member of SGS for over 30 years. He served on our Board of Trustees, as both Secretary and Library Trustee. Under his leadership, the society’s policies and procedures were revamped and the hard files of the organization were placed “in the cloud”. Currently he leads the Family Tree Maker SIG, writes grant applications, and coordinates the KC3I (King County Court Cases Index, 1881 – 1980) queries,  handling over 300 requests for case file information.

Committed to giving back to the society for the years of services he participated in, Mr. Kidd likes to “find things for people”, whether it is a King County Court case file number, or helping a prison inmate find the Civil War record of his ancestor.

Mr. Kidd is a respected and diligent member of the SGS, and so richly deserves this recognition.  Again, congratulations to Reiley.
HELP WANTED! HELP NEEDED!!

SGS needs more volunteers to man the SGS booth at the 72nd Pacific Northwest Scottish Highland Games, Saturday & Sunday, July 28-29, in Enumclaw. If you can help, please contact Jean Roth, jeanaroth@juno.com or (206) 782-2629.

ABOUT OUR LIBRARY AND BOOK SALES

The SGS Library has a wonderful team of volunteers doing various work in the Library, from binding books, sorting and cataloging periodicals, archiving donated genealogical collections to scanning and digitization work. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes at our Library every week.

We are fortunate that the Library receives many donations. Sometimes the books donated are duplicates of ones we already have in our collection. If SPL (Seattle Public Library) or Fiske Genealogical Library does not have them in their collection, then we send them to those libraries. If SPL and Fiske do have them, then we put them on our “Book Sale” shelves in the SGS Library for a very good price. This is an excellent way to increase your personal genealogical library by searching through our “Sale Books” shelves to see if there is something that you can use. We NEVER sell any books from our permanent collection, because we want you to be able to come to the Library to use them. Seattle Genealogical Society Library is a useful resource, come in and see us.

We also sell our duplicate books on eBay. Dona Bubelis is a trusted volunteer in the Library who is our eBay Sales Manager. She has generated over $200 year-to-date in sales for the Library. Not only does she put the duplicate books on sale on eBay, she also packages and mails them for us. She spends much time searching to see if these books will be good buys for people. Her work is much appreciated; thank you, Dona.
