Now in its 10th year, and the 3rd year it has had online access, the three week 2022 Dublin Festival of History is brought to you by the Dublin City Council, organized by the Dublin City Libraries, in partnership with the Dublin City Council Culture Comany. In person or online, the festival is 130+ free events.

If you need help with your own family history research, remember you can schedule a FREE 20-minute online consultation with a research specialist from the FamilySearch Family History Library. Click here to sign up for your consultation! Be sure to be prepared so as to make the most of your 20 minutes. 

There are plenty of resources at your local genealogical society, too. SGS offers technical help through their Tech Tuesday program (every other Tuesday, online, from 10:00-11:00 am), as well as peer support and networking through their multitude of Special Interest Groups, and last, but not least, the Seattle Genealogical Society Networking Group on Facebook. Many a problem has been solved there. Join today.

Genealogy: A Guide for African Americans Tracing Their Roots, 
sponsored by AARP Ohio, 
Tuesday, September 27, 2022 
4:00-5:00 pm PTD 

This session, led by African American genealogy educators Kenyatta D. Berry and Deborah A. Abbott, Ph.D., will offer guidance on how to overcome what’s known as the 1870 Brick Wall, a reference to the fact that censuses taken before the 1870 census did not identify people who had been enslaved by name. The presentation will help you understand what information you should look for to aid you on your journey, and where to find the information. It also will give you an opportunity to get your questions answered. 

Attendees will receive a copy of “The Family Tree Toolkit: A Comprehensive Guide to Uncovering Your Ancestry and Researching Genealogy,” by Kenyatta D. Berry, while supplies last.

This event is FREE to everyone; you need not be an AARP member. But registration is REQUIRED. Please do not opt out of event-related emails, as you will be emailed a link to join the presentation via Zoom prior to the event.  Here’s a link for more info:

Seattle Genealogical Society Tip of the Week National Nordic Museum

TIP OF THE WEEK –
the NATIONAL NORDIC MUSEUM for FREE!
 

The Nordic Heritage Museum was founded in 1979 and in 1980 it occupied a leased space in the old Daniel Webster Elementary School building in Ballard. By May 2018 the museum had expanded, built and moved into a new 57,000 sqft building on NW Market St, and was  renamed the Nordic Museum. In 2019, by an act of the US Congress, the museum was designated the National Nordic Museum. If you haven’t seen the new museum, Thursday would be your chance to see it for free. It is one of many Seattle area museums that offer free entry on the first Thursday of each month.  

Here’s a list of history, culture, and heritage themed museums that participate in the free entry on the first Thursday of the month program: 

  • Burke Museum of Natural History & Culture – UW – 10 am – 8 pm 
  • MOHAI – South Lake Union – 5 pm – 8 pm 
  • National Nordic Museum – Ballard – 10 am – 5 pm 
  • NW African American Museum – SE Seattle – 11 am – 7 pm 

And these two museums are always free:

  • Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park – Pioneer Square –  10 am – 5 pm 
  • Sea Mar Museum of Chicano/a/Latino/a Culture – South Seattle – 8 am – 5 pm

SGS is so pleased to have Judy Russell for our SGS 2022 FALL SEMINAR. And the format for this virtual seminar will be a little different. It will be 4 lectures, totaling 6 hours, spread over two days. Saturday, September 17, 2022, Judy’s presentations will run from 9am until noon. PLEXIGLAS SNEEZE GUARDS
ACHOO, ACHOO!

We still have these sneeze guards and would like to find them a new home. Know anyone in need of them? Ask around, please. 

Just after we closed our SGS library due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions we obtained funding from the Federal Government through a Seattle 4Culture grant to purchase items we would need to reopen the library when it was deemed safe to do so. We used a large part of the grant funds to purchase one-quarter-inch clear Plexiglass ‘sneeze guards’ to use throughout the library in order to provide safe working conditions for our volunteers and patrons. While we still use a few of the sneeze guards, we would like to re-home what we no longer need. The sneeze guards range in size from about 2′ to 2.5′ by 6′. We also have a couple of larger odd-shaped guards. All have ‘feet’ running along one or more edges to help keep them upright.

 SAVE YOUR OWN COPY

You are probably a member of a paid or free genealogy site that allows you to create a link to an image of a record of genealogical importance to you and attach it to a member in your family tree. Do not depend on the link to that image being available to you forever. It is recommended that you always download a copy of the image that is important to you; save a copy on your own media so you will always have the image for your personal use. That way, if something happens and you don’t have access to that site any longer, or the site doesn’t have access to that record set any longer, you still have a digital copy of your own.

“Finding Your Family in Newspapers: Using Chronicling America for Genealogical Research”

Presented by the Library of Congress  on August 3, 2022 at 3:00pm PDT. 

Discover your family’s past through the newspapers of their present. Join Digital Conversion Specialist Henry Carter to learn how to search for ancestors in Chronicling America, a free digital collection of almost 20 million pages from American newspapers published between 1777 and 1963. The presentation will discuss the collection, the search interface, and how to navigate the challenges of working with historic newINspapers. Chronicling America is jointly sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Library of Congress.

KAREN RATHE,
VOLUNTEER OF SUMMER QUARTER

Each quarter, the Seattle Genealogical Society recognizes one member as our Volunteer of the Quarter. Our Volunteer for Summer Quarter 2022 is Karen Rathe. Congratulations to Karen Rathe, Editor of The Journal!

Karen, originally from Portland, Oregon, has been an SGS member for about six years. She volunteered as Vice President for a year. Then as The Journal Editor, she produced the last three issues.

Her professional background has been a huge benefit to SGS. Her talents in creating compelling publications come from her experience teaching journalism for about a decade at The University of Washington and 14 years as copy editor and designer at The Seattle Times. Currently, Karen works part-time for the Puget Sound Business Journal and does occasional stints with Crosscut.com and others.

Karen has enjoyed her involvement with SGS by attending seminars and workshops, where she always comes away with new and helpful information. Also, volunteering for SGS has given her wonderful opportunities to get to know new people and to pick up on genealogy tips. For over half her life, she has been fascinated with uncovering the details of her maternal grandmother’s early life in southwestern Ohio. “My grandmother refused to talk much, so I had to go dig it out much later. Under every rock I overturn, I find a whole new tunnel of mysteries,” she shared.

When Karen isn’t working or sleuthing clues to genealogical mysteries she likes to hike, bicycle, travel and sew. This past year she traveled to Chicago, California and the Canadian Maritimes. Next year’s adventure plans are currently in the works!

RE: NEW HOURS AT SGS 

Dear SGS Library Patrons, 

It has been a challenge for the library to schedule volunteers to consistenly cover the front desk from Monday through Saturday each week. Consequently beginning August 1, 2022, the SGS library will only be open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM PDT. 

If you are interested in volunteering at the SGS library, we would love your help. Please let us know at desk@seattlegenealogicalsociety.org. We would love your involvement.

Seattle Genealogical Society Tip of the Week INDEX WASHINGTON STATE RECORDS

INDEX WASHINGTON STATE RECORDS

The Historical Records Project (HRP) for the Washington State Archives has been around for a while. Millions of records have already been transcribed and indexed, which makes them easily accessible to researchers and genealogists. But countless records still need to be done. Volunteers are the lifeline for this project.  So that’s where you come in! 

Scribe is the online application for entering this data. To volunteer to help you simply Register and Set Up your account, pick which record collection you’d like to work on, and start transcribing. It’s quick and easy. You work on this from the comfort of your own home, at your own pace. Do as many or as few records as you want, quit, and then pick it up again on another day. 

Washington Delayed Birth Records is one of the collections that need transcribing and this is a good record collection to start on. They tend to be easy to read. The image of the document appears on the left of your screen. On the right of your screen is the form into which you enter the child’s first, middle, and last name, gender, birth date, father’s first, middle, and last name, mother’s first, middle, and last name. Save the form. Check it over. Here’s your opportunity to Edit if you’ve made a mistake. Once it looks good, hit Finish for that record.

Pay particular attention to the rules. They are on page 6. Here’s a visual reminder to print and keep at hand while you are transcribing: 

Any one of these rules is bound to come up early on.

Simply remember if a required item is missing enter the word blank.
But if the item is not required leave the space empty.

Don’t use prefix titles. Don’t use suffix titles. Don’t use punctuation.

So ignore Mr, Mrs, Miss, Sr, Jr, Dr, CPA, Esq, etc. As an example : Mr. John M. Doe, Sr, PhD becomes John M Doe.
