“DNA Clustering: Automating Shared Matching” presented by Alec Ferretti 

This talk will demystify autoclustering, by demonstrating how it is simply a more visual method of automating shared matches. Case studies will be used to show how autoclustering is valuable, but is essentially the same strategy genealogists have been using for years.

Alec Ferretti is a New-York-City-based professional genealogist, who works for the Wells Fargo Family & Business History Center, researching family histories for high net worth clients. He serves actively on the Board of Reclaim the Records, a nonprofit dedicated to wrangling public records from obstinate government agencies.

The SKCGS Nominations Committee is pleased to announce the following candidates for election at the May 21 Annual Membership Meeting:

For Vice President: Alexis Scholz – Alexis is currently SKCGS Vice President and has agreed to stand for election. This year, she’s involved with the Five-year Planning project and has done a presentation on wills and probate for the SKCGS General Meeting.
For Secretary: Melanie Hinds – Melanie currently assists SKCGS with calendaring activities and moderating the society’s community forum on Groups.io. She regularly participates in SKCGS general meetings, SIGs and chats via Zoom from her residence in Illinois.

Nominations are still open and will remain so up to the election on May 21. To nominate someone, please contact m.strickland@skcgs.org.

Post Office records are full of genealogical riches. This lecture will discuss Post Office records, their contents, and how to access these underutilized records.

 Julie Miller, holds Certified Genealogist and Certified Genealogical Speaker credentials and is a fellow of the National Genealogical Society. She is a full-time professional researcher, speaker, and writer who lives in Colorado. Her articles have appeared in the NGSQ and NGS Magazine. Julie was the NGS interim Education Manager (2018). She was a member of the NGS conference committee for fourteen years and a volunteer at NARA-Denver for twenty-one years.

At the May General Membership Meeting, SKCGS will hold its annual election for the positions of Vice President and Secretary. Board members must be SKCGS members in good standing for one year prior to the election and agree to serve a two-year term starting June 1, 2022. Alexis Scholz is currently Vice President and has agreed to stand for election to the position. We want to thank Linda Blais, outgoing Secretary, for keeping us organized and taking meeting minutes the past two years. Kate Eakman presents “Adding Historical Context to your Genealogy Research: A Hands-on Approach”
Adding historical context to our genealogical research makes it richer, more interesting, and helps to explain some of the changes in our families. But if you aren’t a historian how do you know when there is an opportunity for adding history to our research? And how do you find the answers? In this class, we will discuss how history and genealogy are the same things. We will learn how to ask the questions that lead to historical discoveries, and finally, we will discover how to find the answers to our questions.

 Kate Eakman holds an MA in History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with additional graduate work in history and education. Before embarking on her career as a professional genealogist, Kate spent 20 years as a college history professor. Today she is the British Empire Team Manager and a Senior Genealogist for Salt Lake City-based Legacy Tree Genealogists. Kate lives in Gresham, Oregon. She and her husband have a retired racehorse named Leon and a mustang named Gwen. The four of them provide opportunities for disadvantaged children to experience a very large animal up close and in person.

Alexis Hacker Scholz presents “The Riches of Probate”
Many genealogy researchers are familiar with the concept of wills and identification of heirs when someone dies. But the probate process can produce other records that are equally valuable. While including wills, the focus of this presentation is to shed light on the range of probate records and illustrate how they can enrich your research.

Alexis Hacker Scholz fell in love with genealogy while sitting at the feet of her Great-Aunt Bess, guardian and storyteller of her maternal family lore. Raised in a military family, Alexis has lived throughout the United States as well as in Turkey. Her career in information has included newspapers, magazines, technical writing, and the internet. When not researching or writing, you can find her in the garden, the kitchen, or project room, and always with a book and her animals at hand. She currently serves as vice president for the South King County Genealogical Society.

Gena Philibert-Ortega presents “Using Lesser Known Genealogy Resources”
Everyone knows Ancestry and FamilySearch but what other resources exist for your family history research? Good research requires a variety of resources that span libraries, archives, museums, digital collections, and home sources. In this presentation we will take a look at resources that can help you go beyond a simple name and help tell the story of your ancestor’s lives.

Gena Philibert-Ortega is an author, researcher, and instructor whose focus is genealogy, social and women’s history. She holds a Master’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies (Psychology and Women’s Studies) and a Master’s degree in Religion. Her published works include two books, numerous articles published in magazines and online, as well as five editions of the Tracing Your Ancestors series from Morsehead Publishing. She is the editor of the Utah Genealogical Association’s magazine, Crossroads. Her writings can be found on her blogs, Gena’s Genealogy and Food.Family.Ephemera as well as the GenealogyBank blog. She has presented to diverse groups worldwide including the Legacy Family Tree Webinar series. Her current research includes women’s repatriation and citizenship in the 20th century, foodways and community in fundraising cookbooks, and women’s material culture.

Dr. Leah Larkin presents “The Hicks Babies”

From the early 1950s to the mid-1960s, Dr. Thomas Hicks ran a community health clinic in McCaysville, Georgia. On the side, he mediated illegal adoptions, selling hundreds of newborns on the black market to couples who couldn’t have children of their own. These so-called “Hicks babies” have no paper trail to document their true parentage. DNA testing has allowed many of them to reunite with their biological families. Three case studies will demonstrate effective research strategies for unknown parentage searches using DNA.

Melinda Kashuba presents “Using Maps in Genealogical Research”

This lecture presents several types of maps that are valuable to genealogical pursuits. Maps obviously help us identify where a place is located. There are many other things maps can help us achieve: visualize past environments, document boundary changes, show the locations of cemeteries, churches, schools, suggest migration routes, and assist us in critically analyzing records. A variety of maps that are helpful in genealogical research will be discussed as well as methods to locate them.

Melinda Kashuba is a professional genealogist and owner of Kashuba Research Services, a genealogical and historical research company. Her popular book, Walking with Your Ancestors: A Genealogist’s Guide to Using Maps and Geography, joins a long list of articles in numerous genealogical magazines and other publications. She teaches throughout the United States and is a Course Coordinator and faculty member at IGHR and faculty member at SLIG.

Are you sitting on a pile of old family photographs and wondering what is the best way to preserve them? What about boxes of family vacation slides, photo negatives or home movies? As more and more Baby Boomers take on the task of organizing family history materials, we’re uncertain about the best way to preserve these memories. And an over-abundance of technology doesn’t help! Participants will learn the best ways to organize and preserve family photos including outsourcing as well as the DIY approach. Starting with quick and easy inventory and organizing tips, we’ll move on to creating a strategic plan to finally get this photo project done!
