What conditions existed for your ancestors to leave their home and make a journey to a new place? What conditions existed to encourage settlement in the Americas, especially the Pacific Northwest? This presentation focuses primarily on the push and pull factors for voluntary immigration in the mid-19th to mid-20th centuries. What laws applied to immigration and what documents can genealogists find?
Janice Lovelace is a genealogical researcher, educator, author, and lecturer, with over thirty years of experience. She completed the Genealogy and Family History certificate at the University of Washington in 2012, the certificate program in genealogy at Boston University in 2013, and ProGen in 2014. A frequent speaker, Dr. Lovelace also an instructor at the Midwest African American Genealogical Institute (MAAGI). A retired college faculty member, Dr. Lovelace authored the National Genealogical Society’s online continuing education course African American Roots: A Historical Perspective. SUSAN McKEE AND CAROLYN SCHOTT, VOLUNTEERS OF THE SPRING QUARTER
This Spring Quarter 2023 we are celebrating and thanking two of our Society’s Special Interest Group (SIG) leaders – Carolyn Schott and Susan McKee. Carolyn (a member for 10 years) runs the German SIG and Susan (a member of 6 years) heads the Irish SIG along with Jim Ryan.
Carolyn’s area of expertise is Germans who lived in the Black Sea Region (which is now primarily Ukraine) and she is also the co-founder of a Black Sea German Research group (www.blackseagr.org). A fascinating but sad discovery of hers has been getting NKVD (the predecessor to the KGB) arrest records on some of her family members!
Susan, born and raised in Ireland, concentrates her research on her Irish family lines although she has discovered that her mother’s great grandfathers came to Ireland from rural England. “Researching this line continues to remind me of the very complex and long-standing interconnections that exist between Ireland and England and how important it is to remain open to the ever-changing nature of identity”, she says.
Susan and Carolyn enjoy their regular interactions with SIG members and the enthusiasm everyone brings to their research. Both women appreciate the use of Zoom. “Although there are many things I miss about in-person meetings, I actually love doing this by Zoom because we get people attending from all over the U.S. It has also made it possible to line up speakers from all over,” says Carolyn.
When not working on genealogy Carolyn is skiing, hiking, or supporting Ukraine at the local rallies – “Slava Ukraini!” She also loves to travel and is so passionate about it that she wrote the book entitled “Visiting Your Ancestral Town”. Many of Susan’s interests outside of genealogy involve similar skills. She enjoys word puzzles, jigsaw puzzles and mysteries, whether in books, films, or escape room experiences!
Both Carolyn and Susan would love you to join their SIG meetings. Both groups meet on the third Saturday of the month (Irish 10:15-12:15 and German 1:00-3:00). Please check the calendar of events at www.seagensoc.org.

DON’T GET SCAMMED
You get an email that says it’s from MacKiev, maker of Family Tree Maker software. It has an offer for a free upgrade. Not so fast …. Several people are receiving similar messages by email or chat that are actually fraudulent. Here’s how to spot the scam.
The messages ask you to call a telephone number, but MacKiev does not actually have a phone help line.
The email address provided in the message is not connected to MacKiev. If a message seems to come from a company you know, a good rule of thumb is to use Google to find the company’s real site to validate claims.
Family Tree Maker 2019 is the most current version of the program. There is no 2023 version.
Don’t trust everything you hear in a chat. If you need assistance with Family Tree Maker, go to: https://www.mackiev.com/techsupport/ftm/livechat.html. This way you know you are speaking to a real representative of the company.

Claire Smith is a Professional Genealogist with certificates from Boston University, the University of Washington, and the ProGen Professional Genealogy Study Group. She is a wizard at presenting an organized approach for finding missing ancestors. A gifted and popular speaker, she includes humor and supporting details for her topic.
In this presentation she will share methodologies for breaking down your brick walls.

What an exciting time I had in Richmond, Virginia as the Delegate from Eastern Washington Genealogical Society. The news: The National Genealogical Society (NGS) and Genealogy ConferenceKeeper.org, Inc. (ConferenceKeeper), announced at the NGS 2023 Family History Conference an agreement to merge before the end of the year.
ConferenceKeeper is the most complete, entirely free, online calendar of genealogy conferences and events. With the merger, ConferenceKeeper will continue to support local genealogical societies, libraries, and genealogy-related businesses by providing a wider audience for their programs. Bio: Meghan Caves has nearly completed her Master’s Degree in anthropology and is pursuing her Doctorate in historical archaeology at the University of Idaho. She has worked as an archaeologist in the Pacific Northwest since 2018 and is currently an archaeological technician at the Umatilla National Forest out of the Pomeroy Ranger District in Southeastern Washington.
Meghan’s topic: Archaeology, Genealogy and A Privy
Meghan’s thesis research weaves together multiple stories of indigenous and Euro-American families who surrounded and interacted with an archaeological deposit originally excavated and analyzed in 2008 from Arlington, Washington. Meghan’s reanalysis of the archaeological assemblage employs a biographical approach, which looks at how the ‘lifetimes’ of artifacts discarded in the “privy” are connected to the lives of the Teager, Hurd, Lovelace, and Weimer families who owned and occupied the site between 1890 and 1940. In order to construct nuanced and compelling biographies of the site, she employed extensive archival and genealogical research with the help of the Stillaquamish Valley Genealogical Society in 2021. Her talk will discuss how genealogical methods were used in her research, how this kind of historical information is more broadly useful to archaeologists, and explore the ethical implications of using publicly available genealogical information for archaeological research.

Born and raised in upstate New York, he made it his life’s work to document the history of the “heroes” of the American Revolution, especially in the upper South. During the 1840s, Draper amassed a collection of research materials that included interview notes, correspondence, clippings, transcriptions, and original historical documents. He brought the collection to Wisconsin in 1852. The Draper Collection is now a treasure trove of genealogical and historical information about individuals who lived through the American Revolution and the War of 1812. It includes the papers of Daniel Boone, George Rogers Clark, Joseph Brant, and many others; and includes references to thousands of individuals. Reference Archivist Lee Grady will present an overview of the Draper Manuscripts, and provide practical tips for genealogical researchers.
Lee Grady is Senior Reference Archivist at the Wisconsin Historical Society. He has master’s degrees in American History, and Library and Information Studies from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He has been on the staff of the Historical Society for over 25 years and has a wide range of experience with the Society’s archival collections.
