After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. This meeting will be recorded for playback by members. A case study using a simplified approach to Y- and atDNA and some genealogy tips to tie everything together. I began this project for one reason—to pique my husband’s interest in my then new and consuming interest in genealogy—it worked. His father, long since deceased, was adopted. We had no information about his biological parents. This is a case study of how we moved from no information to standing in the church yard in England in which my husband’s 7th great grandfather was married in 1669. We’ll discuss how coupling available records with a simplified approach to Y- and at-DNA will head us in the right direction. As we all know, luck often precedes discovery; there are some strategies that increase the chances luck comes your way. We’ll go through some of those strategies that worked in this case study. I hope you’ll come on this journey with me and get to meet my husband’s grandmother—known in her lifetime as “that woman.”


 Dr. Carol Gorman Friedel is a passionate amateur genetic genealogist. She’s been researching as well as attending lectures, classes, workshops, and courses since 2008 when she retired from practicing general dentistry. She is an administrator for two surname groups at Family Tree DNA (Gorman and Chatman). Carol belongs to several genealogical societies and is a member of the SKCGS Education Committee. She’s interested in learning more about this wonderful obsession we all share and in helping fellow genealogists as well as giving a hand to adoptees trying to find their biological parents.

NEW AT THE SGS LIBRARY!

Beginning on April 1, 2023,  a new subscription service, http:// historygeo.com, will be available at the SGS Library. This website is an online version of the Family Maps and Texas Land Survey Maps book series. Instead of looking at landowner maps township by township, you’ll have a single, interactive map containing over 12.3 million landowners among 30 states (all 29 of the public land states, plus Texas). A single click of a parcel of land will link to both Google maps and patents’ source documents at the Bureau of Land Management or Texas General Land Office. Also included is a collection of approximately 4000 maps from various sources showing landowners at a particular point in time. Sometime in April 2023, SGS will offer a class on how to use this website. Watch for it.

Carolyn Ladd, JD, CG is the most recent SGS genealogist to receive the credential of Certified Genealogist, an achievement indicative of the attainment of the highest of standards associated with the field of genealogy. She joins other SGS members Trish Nicola, Carol Jenner, Jill Morelli and Stephanie O’Connell in the attainment of that goal. Carolyn, like Stephanie, is a graduate of the SGS online Certification Discussion Group, which since 2017 has instructed over 600 genealogists in strategies, tips and techniques for a successful portfolio, a prerequisite for attainment of the credential. We wish her a great genealogical journey!

“Alice Gentle Laughs Over School Days” celebrates home town Opera singer Alice Gentle’s return to her Seattle and recounted recollections of old school times. The article noted that on the operatic stage she is “notably the lead of “Carmen”, “La Tosera”, “La Navarraise” and “Le Chemineau.” The article further explained that she was singing in “La Tosca” …with the San Carlo Opera
Company at the Metropolitan Theatre” and would appear at the Opera Comique in Paris
during the coming winter season.

A genealogical brick wall is a question that remains unanswered after exhaustive research. Would you like to see the brick wall as a yellow brick road? Kim says she’s going to show us how at her upcoming presentation.

Professional genealogist Kim Richardson founded a research and consulting firm to assist clients in their pursuit of their ancestors. She also enjoys spending time researching her own family, but Kim’s favorite genealogy activity is serving the family history community by coaching and empowering others to break through barriers to achieve their goals. To that end, Kim created and developed the “Brick Wall Buster Cards” to show others her secret to solving tough genealogy problems and family mysteries.

She regularly teaches and presents to groups across the country. She also writes for local and state genealogy publications and wrote the “Mississippi Research Guide” for Family Tree Magazine. She has researched for TV shows Finding Your Roots and Who Do You Think You Are? Kim earned a B.A. in Communication with a concentration in Public Relations from Mississippi State University. She retired from service to the State of Mississippi after 25 years as an advocate for victims of violent crime and working in highway traffic safety programs.

DNA Doesn’t Lie, but Needs Help to Find the Truth!  — a presentation by Debbie Smith sponsored by the Clallam Genealogical Society Saturday, April 15th  at our 10:30 am meeting.

DNA is a valuable tool for use in genealogic research for providing the proof of a genetic relationship. However, it does not stand alone.  Documentary research is needed to confirm genealogic relationships.  This lecture will demonstrate how pairing DNA discoveries with research can strengthen your conclusions.

Debbie Smyth holds a Certificate in Genealogical Research from Boston University.  Her research and lectures focus on DNA, methodology, lineage society applications, and midwestern and southern states.

The meeting will be available through Zoom.  One can obtain the Zoom meeting number and passcode by calling CCGS Tuesday through Friday — 10am to 4pm, or Saturday — noon to 4pm.  The phone number is 360-417-5000.

JESS RAMEY, VOLUNTEER
OF WINTER QUARTER 2023 Each quarter the Seattle Genealogical Society recognizes one member as our Volunteer of the Quarter. Our Volunteer for Winter Quarter 2023 is Jess Ramey.

Jess Ramey has been a member of SGS for twenty-six years and an SGS Library volunteer since 2016. Jess started helping out by sorting all the maps and then progressed to scanning and indexing document collections donated to the library over the years. Currently he is in the process of making those digital collections available on the library’s patron computers. Jess has also served as a Library Trustee and is currently a member of the Material Review Committee. When asked about what he likes about volunteering with SGS Jess said, “I like the feeling that I am contributing to others’ quests for information about their families.”

Jess also appreciates attending SGS events, especially in-person. Pre-pandemic, he attended many of the Spring and Fall seminars and enjoyed the interaction with the other attendees.

Jess’s personal genealogical interest is his family name. Although he has found much research on the Ramey surname, he has not yet been able to make a connection to the family in late 18th century Virginia. Census records indicate his third great-grandfather was born in Virginia in 1783, but he has not been able to confirm this, or identify parents.  This is a brick wall he has been attempting to break through for the past thirty years. 

When Jess isn’t helping out at SGS or sleuthing genealogical mysteries, he enjoys spending time fishing with his sons. He also volunteers with the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program and works as a tax counselor/preparer every February-April tax season.

This month’s presentation is “Finding Treasures in Academic Libraries”. Academic libraries, archives, and special collections are an often overlooked resource for genealogists. These collections, located on (usually) university campuses, will have resources available nowhere else. One’s ancestor does not need to have been a student or faculty member to find value in an academic library. New territory for you? Don’t feel intimidated. Jill Morelli’s excellent advice on the subject will guide you.

 “Women Paying for Working” informed the Seattle P-I.

Crouched in between an article regarding “Rum Men Pay Income Taxes” was another an article “Woman Paying For Working” noting that “Nearly one-sixth of the income tax returns being made at the office of the internal revenue collector in the federal building are filled by women.” A fitting article for Women’s History Month.

MyHeritage at RootsTech

It was incredible seeing so many familiar faces in person at RootsTech! 

In addition to our big announcements and numerous classes, a major conference highlight was the exclusive session presented by MyHeritage’s Founder and CEO, Gilad Japhet. Gilad reflected on one of his most recent family history discoveries, dove into the newly released MyHeritage features, and gave an exciting preview of what’s to come.
