Improvement of Genetic Groups on MyHeritage
Viewing Genetic Groups of DNA Matches
As part of our continued improvement of Genetic Groups on MyHeritage, you can now compare your Genetic Groups to those of your DNA Matches! Previously, you were able to view the Ethnicity Estimate of your DNA Matches and see which ethnicities you share. Now, you can drill down even further and see which Genetic Groups they belong to, and which ones you have in common. This addition has important genealogical value, and may enable you to narrow down which side of your family a DNA Match comes from. Read more about this exciting new addition in the blog post.
Significant Update to Swedish Historical Records on MyHeritage
We recently added 19.35 million records to our collection of Sweden Household Examination Books. The new records cover the years 1820–1839, and bring the total number of records in this collection to 144.5 million. The records in this collection are the #1 source of information about families and individuals who lived in Sweden in the 19th and 20th centuries. This is great news for all genealogists with Swedish roots, who may now be able to date their family tree back even further and make new discoveries.

AG Ferguson: Federal judge blocks sale of Seattle Archives

| Feb. 12, 2021 AG Ferguson: Federal judge blocks sale and closure of Seattle’s National Archives facility SEATTLE — Attorney General Bob Ferguson issued the following statement today after a federal judge in Seattle blocked the federal government’s plan to expedite the sale of Seattle’s National Archives facility and ship the un-digitized records out of the region. Judge John C. Coughenour, Senior Judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington, said he will issue a preliminary injunction next week in which he will rule that Ferguson’s coalition was likely to prevail in its lawsuit asserting that the federal government acted unlawfully when it moved to sell the National Archives facility and scatter the archival records thousands of miles away. Ferguson, working with a coalition of regional tribes, community organizations, the City of Seattle and Oregon’s Attorney General, asked the court in January to enjoin, or block, the sale while the litigation continues. The coalition filed nearly 600 pages of declarations from 79 individuals. “Today’s legal victory blocks the federal government’s unlawful plan to sell the Archives and scatter the DNA of our region thousands of miles away,” Ferguson said. “This victory preserves our ability to physically connect to our history by visiting the Archives and accessing the un-digitized records that are deeply personal to so many. The federal government callously ignored deep concerns raised by the decision to ship these records to California and Missouri, including issues related to racial equity, tribal relations, conservation, good government, and the rule of law. The judge just did what these federal agencies should have done – consider the facility’s importance to our region and apply the law.” Assistant Attorneys General Lauryn Fraas and Kristin Beneski are handling this case for Washington. -30- The Office of the Attorney General is the chief legal office for the state of Washington with attorneys and staff in 27 divisions across the state providing legal services to roughly 200 state agencies, boards and commissions. NGS Delegate Council Virtual Kickoff Workshop
| Dear Friends of Washington State Genealogical Society, The NGS Delegate Council Virtual Kickoff Workshop is the first opportunity for NGS member organization delegates to work and learn together. The workshop is an opportunity to collaborate with peers from other genealogy organizations and learn more about the role of a delegate. Scheduled for 17 May 2021, it is one of several new components of our week long virtual NGS 2021 Family History Conference focused on genealogy organizations. Each NGS member organization is invited to “send” its delegate to the workshop which will be held entirely online. There is no fee to register. Delegates will receive their invitations soon. The Virtual Kickoff Workshop is a time to learn about the Delegate Council–the new advisory body for genealogical organizations that are members of NGS. The Delegate Council provides a unique perspective and guidance to the NGS Board of Directors on genealogy and family history matters, and how NGS can best serve genealogy and family history organizations. It’s also time to get to work! Delegates will share ideas and thoughts on genealogy organization management while charting a course for how the Council will work together. The workshop will: Provide information about the structure and function of the Delegate Council Facilitate understanding of Delegate Council member roles Prepare members for effective collaboration on the Delegate Council. If you are unsure of your organization’s NGS membership status or its assigned delegate, please contact membership@ngsgenealogy.org. NGS will record some portions of the workshop and make them available to member organizations on its website.
