AMERICA’S TRANSPORTATION REVOLUTION:

MIGRATION and PROSPERITY

In the1800s America underwent a Transportation Revolution that greatly affected workers, farmers, and communities all across the nation. Dr. Austin Kerr, Ohio State University History Professor and member of Jefferson County Genealogical Society (JCGS), will share the story of his family to illustrate the changes and impacts of the Revolution on the movements of people and their economic opportunities. The public is invited to hear this free presentation at the monthly meeting of JCGS on Saturday morning, June 17, 9:30 – 11:30, at the Chimacum Grange, located across Hwy 19 from the Tri-Area Community Center in Chimacum. MAKING SENSE OF SUPPLEMENTAL CENSUSES

Jefferson County Genealogical Society (JCGS) has invited Professional Genealogist, Janet Camarata, to be their speaker at their monthly meeting on Saturday morning May 20, 9:30 – 11:30 at the Tri-Area Community Center, 10 W. Valley Rd, Chimacum. The public is invited; donations are gratefully accepted. Janet’s topic “Making Sense of the Supplemental Censuses” will acquaint us with the many census collections such as agriculture, manufacturing, slave schedules, veterans, social statistics, etc that the U.S. government has collected over the years. Learn what is available, where to find them in Ancestry, Family Search, and the National Archives and how to build a personal guidebook for help in reading and understanding each census. Janet Camarata is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists and is an experienced instructor having taught for many years in the workplace and at the University of Phoenix. Genealogy Tools for the 21st Century: Facebook and Google
Jefferson County Genealogical Society (JCGS) invites the public to their full-day Seminar comprised of two 1 ½ hour professional programs, Saturday, April 15, 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Tri-Area Community Center, 10 W. Valley Rd, Chimacum. In addition, JCGS will host Heritage Quest that will be offering for sale a large selection of genealogy books that will help individuals to find the story of their ancestors. Bring your own lunch and a $10.00 donation. <www.wajcgs.org>

Back by popular demand, Master Genealogist, Mary Kathryn Kozy, will make the two presentations. During the morning session, Mary Kathryn will demonstrate how to use Facebook to locate and find unknown cousins and their family research. During the afternoon session she will demonstrate how to use Google to enhance our research efforts. This may well be the only place such information is available.

Pledging Allegiance

Evelyn Roehl, a professional genealogist and owner of Kin Hunters Historic Research Service in Seattle, will be Jefferson County Genealogical Society’s (JCGS) speaker at their monthly meeting the morning of Saturday, March 18. Evelyn’s topic is “Pledging Allegiance: The Paper Trail to Naturalization Records”. Naturalization records are known to be a ‘gold mine of information’ about ancestors. Evelyn will also talk about research techniques and tips; finding records; historical information about naturalizations and citizenship; changes in laws and practices; and court systems. The public is welcome to attend JCGS ‘no fee’ meeting, though donations are gratefully accepted. Marge Samuelson Awarded 2016 Outstanding Volunteer Honor

Since 2003, the Washington State Genealogical Society has recognized almost 500 outstanding volunteers and teams, nominated by their local society or genealogical organization for their service and dedication. These volunteers are the backbone of their local society, giving their time and expertise, to the organization and the field of genealogy. In the next few weeks, you will be introduced to each of last year’s award recipients and learn why they received the 2016 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer and Team Award.

Marge Samuelson

Today we’re introducing Marge Samuelson of Port Townsend, Washington, who was nominated by the Jefferson County Genealogical Society (JCGS). She was recognized for her never-ending commitment to preserving the history of Jefferson County and the field of genealogy.

Ms. Samuelson has been an invaluable volunteer with the JCGS for many years. She has served as treasurer, membership chair, historian and vice president. She was also newsletter editor for more than four years, wrote many articles for the county history section of the newsletter and maintained a blog, researching and writing articles about local historical topics.

Ms. Samuelson has also worked tirelessly averaging over 75 hours a month transcribing records from the local newspaper. To date, she has extracted over 100,000 names.

Ms. Samuelson’s passion and commitment to researching and sharing the local history prove she richly deserves being a recipient of a 2016 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award.

Mary Roddy, Jefferson County Genealogical Society (JCGS) speaker this month will present “Read ‘Em or Weep”. Her program involves finding free and pay newspaper sites online and will show us a method to do a ‘thorough searching in every newspaper every time’. Public is welcome! Free. Mary Roddy is a Certified Public Accountant who has earned a certificate from the Genealogy and Family History Program at the University of Washington. She is an active member of the Seattle Genealogical Society and speaks frequently to groups in the Seattle area. Her background in accounting has influenced the way she uses spreadsheets and forensic research in her genealogy. Mary is a regular contributor to YourGenealogyToday and Internet Genealogy magazines as well as a webinar presenter with Legacy Family Tree Webinars.

GRANDPA’S SOCK DRAWER  —  January 2017 Meeting!

The monthly meeting of the Jefferson County Genealogical Society (JCGS) hosts seasoned genealogist Rod Fleck as January’s guest speaker. His topic is “Military Research: That medal/picture/pin in Grandpa’s sock drawer”. Fleck says, “There’s more than one way to learn about the military experience of your recent ancestor. If you don’t have letters or diaries, online sites can help you piece together the story. I’ll be explaining how to be successful in finding what you need.” The presentation will focus on utilizing Google, Fold3.com, Ancestry.com, the National Archive’s Online Databases, and other websites.  Please feel free to bring that medal, photo, pin, or “veteran bring back” that is in your family that you are unsure about.

Rod Fleck has been the City Attorney and Planner for the City of Forks for nearly 20 years.  In that role, he handles issues ranging from annexations to criminal prosecutions to forest policy issues to zoning applications.  In 1991, he obtained a B.A. in History from the University of Washington and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa that same year.  He has a J.D. from Seattle University School of Law.

He lead the Seattle Genealogical Society’s German Interest Group for a decade and has given numerous presentations on German genealogy.  He was the Camp Organizer for the Governor Isaac Stevens Camp No. 1 of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.  In 2015, he was elected as the first Department of the Columbia of the SUVCW.  He is also the President of the Augustan Society that specializes in history, heraldry, genealogy and nobility.  In 2012 and 2013, he was the lead author of an article published in the New England Historical and Genealogical Society’s Register covering the life of Sampson Dunbar and His Family, the focus of our presentation today.

 

Jefferson County GS Has More Knots in Them Than Others

Join the Jefferson County Genealogy Society for their program “Some Family Trees Have More Knots in Them Than Others” on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at the Tri-Area Community Center, 10 W.Valley Rd., Chimacum. The program will being at 9:30 a.m. with a ‘meet & greet’, followed by brief announcements and the presentation from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m.

Jefferson County Genealogy Society (JCGS) members have submitted their “family tree knots” (aka “brick walls”) to Jesse Stewart and friends, JCGS’s researchers extraordinaire. This annual popular presentation has Jesse using a variety of research techniques and records to reconsider some ”knotty” problems to help members of JCGS in their research. She also asks for the audience’s suggestions for research options during the presentation. You will find that discussions of how to investigate family tree “knots” or “brick walls” can give you ideas for your own research challenges.
