TIP OF THE WEEK –
No Such Thing as a Free Lunch, but …

If you’re not familiar with the LDS annual Washington Family History Fair, it’s an entire day of free classes taught by qualified instructors.  The day consists of five one-hour sessions. You have several classes to choose from for each session. There are approximately 40 classes in all, plus an Exhibitor Gallery. Classes run the gamut from beginner to advanced. Registration, classes, and parking are all free!  Sounds almost too good to be true, but I attended last year and was impressed.

Pre-registration is encouraged and available on-line. If you want a printed syllabus or a boxed lunch, those are available for a nominal fee and you order those during pre-registration. Classes are on a first come, first served basis. Pre-registering will help them plan for the size of the room they need for each class as well as the number of syllabuses to print.

Our new SGS President, Jill Morelli,  and SGS members, Jean Roth, Mary Kircher Roddy, and Steve Morrison will be presenting.  Refer to the “Agenda and Schedule” on the website to check out the class descriptions and/or information on any of the numerous instructors.

This year the Family History Fair 2016 is at the Bellevue South Stake Center, behind the temple at 15205 SE 28th Street, Bellevue, WA 98007, on Saturday, November 12, from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm.  Doors open at 8:00 am for check-in or day-of-event registration.

OUR NEW SGS PRESIDENT,
 JILL MORELLI

The Seattle Genealogical Society Board is happy to announce that Jill Morelli has agreed to assume the role of President of the Society for the remainder of the 2016-2017 year. You may know Jill from her role as Publications Director of the Society from 2012 to 2015, as well as the many programs she has been involved with and the numerous presentations she has given to the Society. She has devoted the interim time to writing her portfolio for certification as a certified genealogist which has only recently been submitted for review. While the outcome is yet unknown, she is now free to devote her time to the Society and the needs of the membership. The position has been vacant since the election last spring. Please welcome Jill.

TIP OF THE WEEK – HeinOnLine Wants to Give Back

Since it’s launch in 2000, HeinOnLine,  an internet database service by William S. Hein & Co., Inc., a Buffalo, NY publisher specializing in legal materials, has won award after award.  Now they just got a huge shout out from Judy G Russell, the Legal Genealogist.

William S. Hein & Co., Inc. describes their newly launched collection,  Slavery in America and the World: History, Culture & Law,   as “monumental, unique, (and) culturally significant,”. Judy concurs.  She calls it “fabulous”. This collection is all known legal materials on slavery in the United States and the English-speaking world.  And it’s free to everyone! You will need to register for access, but that’s a simple process.

To read more about William S. Hein & Co.  and the collection, check out Judy’s latest blog entitled “Shining a Light” at :

TIP OF THE WEEK – DID YOU HAVE ANCESTORS in
 19th CENTURY, WHITMAN COUNTY, ANYONE?

The Whitman County Genealogical Society(WCGS) has published a new book :

“Whitman County, Washington Territory:
Gleanings from Selected Newspapers
with Every Name Index (1877-1886)”

As described by WCGS, their “243 page spiral bound book with laminated covers compiled by Mary Bybee Simonsen in cooperation with WCGS, contains 194 pages of gleanings, plus an index of over 5,000 different names.  There were many newspapers in Whitman County from 1877-1886, but most gleanings were extracted from the Palouse Gazette, the Washington Democrat (both Colfax, W.T. newspapers), and the Palouse News (a Palouse City, W.T. newspaper), plus a few other area newspapers.  The extractions were done from microfilm at Washington State University Holland Library in Pullman, WA.  Every readable issue of these newspapers during this time period was reviewed for possible gleanings.  Most gleanings are from records, such as births, marriages, divorces, deaths, and land records, plus other interesting items related to the area.   Some articles, especially land records, were too faint to read, so the gleaning was edited.  Full articles may be read at a facility having these microfilmed newspapers.”

The book sells for $25 or it is also available on CD in PDF format for $15; taxes and shipping included. Contact address for WCGS : PO BOX 393, Pullman, WA 99163.  See WCGS pages posted on the Washington State Genealogical Society Blog for additional information and order form at:

There will be a pre-meeting social hour with coffee, tea, and light snacks beginning at noon. This is a great opportunity to meet fellow SGS members,  the current Board of Directors, and fellow researchers. Perhaps you’ll find someone who can provide a clue or two for your own family history!
