Our 7th Annual Tell The Story Black History Conference will take place at the U of U’s new S. J. Quinney law building, located directly across the street from the Stadium Trax Station. Parking in the Stadium Station Lot and the S.J. Quinney Lot is FREE, compliments of our Sponsor S.J. Quinney College of Law and Dean Elizabeth Kronk Warner.

We will have two (2) Tracks of in-person classes this year plus a Bonus Early-bird Class plus Board of Directors’ Presentation on preparations for a Black History Museum plus Keynote Address by Dr. Joseph Stuart plus a Lunch-time Session with Lanzo Liggins and Danor Gerald, the hosts of PBS Utah’s “Race, Roots, and Culture”. Please join us as we explore and discuss stories of Utah’s history that give us a fuller version of Utah’s history. This year, you can register for the entire conference, the conference AND our Friday evening (16 Sept) Ancestral Remembrance Celebration, pick-a-class where you register for just one or a few classes of your choosing, or virtual attendance (an entire Track of Conference Committee pre-selected classes).

Register Here Special Addresses and Panels Board of Directors Presentation: “Building a Black History Museum Foundation: Engagement Is a Building Block” Description: Museums often struggle to step outside of their comfort areas and find approaches to underserved communities. Sema Hadithi African American Heritage and Culture Foundation is confronting that issue head-on, by taking the critical steps of researching and building relationships prior to building a physical museum. This discussion will address insights and challenges from our work so far. — Presenters: Robert Burch, Sema Hadithi Foundation’s Founder & Executive Director; Alana Blumenthal, Museum Director, Brigham City Museum of Art & History, Sema Hadithi Foundation’s Director of Institutional Development; Kirk Huffaker, Owner & President of Huffaker Preservation Strategies, Sema Hadithi Foundation’s Managing Director Keynote Address: “Freedom, Justice, and Equality for Black Men in America: Race, Masculinity, and the Nation of Islam in the Black Freedom Movement – 1931-1975” — Presenter: Joseph Stuart, Ph.D. Lunch-time Session: PBS-UT’s Hosts of “Roots, Race, & Culture: A Discussion with Hosts & Producers Danor Gerald & Lanzo Liggins” Description: Hosts Lanzo Liggins and Danor Gerald talk about their show on PBS Utah “Roots, Race, and Culture”, why they started it, how they put it together, how they select the stories, how they chose to work together, how they pitched the idea to PBS. Class Q&A. Bonus Class to run in the early morning for people to attend after checking-in. Virtual AND In-Person Attendees will be able to access this class. “Monuments & Memorials” — Presenters: Jami Van Huss, Museum Director, Hyrum City Museum; and Emily Crumpton-Deason, Research Consultant, L.D.S. Church History Library. To be shown as recorded on Tue 31 May 2022. — Time: 7:45 am – 8:30 am Description: In our current societal climate with statues being removed and destroyed and people protesting images, do you understand the difference a monument and a memorial? This class was originally held on Tuesday 31 May 2022 In-Person as a Crucial Community Conversation. The conference is the final event of the weekend which includes the walking tour and ancestral remembrance celebration on Friday 16 September.
