Born and raised in upstate New York, he made it his life’s work to document the history of the “heroes” of the American Revolution, especially in the upper South. During the 1840s, Draper amassed a collection of research materials that included interview notes, correspondence, clippings, transcriptions, and original historical documents. He brought the collection to Wisconsin in 1852. The Draper Collection is now a treasure trove of genealogical and historical information about individuals who lived through the American Revolution and the War of 1812. It includes the papers of Daniel Boone, George Rogers Clark, Joseph Brant, and many others; and includes references to thousands of individuals. Reference Archivist Lee Grady will present an overview of the Draper Manuscripts, and provide practical tips for genealogical researchers.

Lee Grady is Senior Reference Archivist at the Wisconsin Historical Society. He has master’s degrees in American History, and Library and Information Studies from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.  He has been on the staff of the Historical Society for over 25 years and has a wide range of experience with the Society’s archival collections.

Yet, so many genealogists leave periodical literature untouched when conducting their research and investigating secondary sources of data. This presentation identifies the major types of periodical literature, what indices are available and how they can be most effectively used, and where one can find specific publications. Special attention is given to the Periodical Source Index as the largest and most comprehensive subject index in the genealogical field, and now freely available from the Genealogy Center’s webpage at GenealogyCenter.org.

Curt Witcher is the Director of Special Collections at the Allen County Public Library, managing the widely acclaimed Genealogy Center as well as the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection of Abraham Lincoln related research materials and the institution’s Fine Books Collection. He is a former president of both the Federation of Genealogical Societies and the National Genealogical Society, and the founding president of the Indiana Genealogical Society.

I began this project for one reason—to pique my husband’s interest in my then new and consuming interest in genealogy—it worked. His father, long since deceased, was adopted. We had no information about his biological parents. This is a case study of how we moved from no information to standing in the church yard in England in which my husband’s 7th great grandfather was married in 1669. We’ll discuss how coupling available records with a simplified approach to Y- and at-DNA will head us in the right direction. As we all know, luck often precedes discovery; there are some strategies that increase the chances luck comes your way. We’ll go through some of those strategies that worked in this case study. I hope you’ll come on this journey with me and get to meet my husband’s grandmother—known in her lifetime as “that woman.”

Dr. Carol Gorman Friedel is a passionate amateur genetic genealogist. She’s been researching as well as attending lectures, classes, workshops, and courses since 2008 when she retired from practicing general dentistry. She is an administrator for two surname groups at Family Tree DNA (Gorman and Chatman). Carol belongs to several genealogical societies and is a member of the SKCGS Education Committee. She’s interested in learning more about this wonderful obsession we all share and in helping fellow genealogists as well as giving a hand to adoptees trying to find their biological parents.

To some genealogists ‘the hunt’ is everything. Learn how to shift gears and to write a cohesive story about your ancestor. Writing helps you refocus your thinking. You might even surprise yourself, realizing you’ve bagged your ancestor without knowing it!

Steven Waltz Morrison is the past-president of the Puget Sound Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists and the Olympia Genealogical Society. He attained a Master’s degree from The Evergreen State College where he taught for seven years as an adjunct faculty. In 2018 Steven coordinated Exploring Quaker Records-At Home and Abroad at SLIG, in 2020 co-coordinated Exploring American Quaker Records at GRIP, and in 2021 coordinated Quaker Records of North America, Ireland and the British Isles for ISBGFH. He’s addressed international audiences on Quaker topics at the Ulster American Heritage Symposium in Omagh, Ireland & Toronto, Canada, and the Yearly Meeting of Friends in Ireland. In 2016, the American Society of Genealogists awarded him their Scholar Award.

SOUTH KING COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY
PO BOX 582
AUBURN, WASHINGTON 98071-0582

Sustaining Societies

Sustaining Societies

For years there has been periodic emphasis on “growth of our genealogical societies.” While we always welcome new members, we must not overlook another important task–sustaining the function of our existing societies.

Successful societies have established a mission such as that of SKCGS:

  • Stimulate interest in genealogy and aid individual members in compiling their family records
  • Seek genealogical and historical knowledge
  • Preserve and perpetuate the records of our ancestors
  • Promote the preservation of public and private genealogical materials

While the mission may be tailored to fit the needs of its members by time and location, one thing remains constant–who is sustaining the operation of the society?  Does the society meet the needs of its members?  Who is working behind the scenes to to accomplish that goal?  How do leaders, members and newcomers contribute?

SKCGS works toward our purpose through monthly meetings featuring knowledgeable speakers on a range of topics in the field of family history and genealogical research.  We have an Education Committee who plan an annual program, seek speakers and negotiate contractual details.

Who is on the Education Committee?

We have user groups and special interest groups for assistance with genealogical software, technology and DNA/genetic genealogy. We have this weekly blog with timely articles of interest.

Who is responsible for producing these outlets of information?

During the Covid pandemic we developed a very successful virtual program and have gained wonderful friends and members throughout the world. The Membership Committee maintains the current database, welcoming new members and sending gentle reminders for renewals.

Who is serving on the Membership Committee?

I can go on by listing the other committees and individuals who operate SKCGS–Publicity, Outreach, Resources, Librarian, Webmaster, etc.  The point is, it takes many individuals to bring you a sustaining and healthy society.

And that is a crucial point, that the society must be able to sustain itself. It is a fact that our membership are an aging population. While our interests may not wane, our physical abilities do become diminished.  We need capable helpers to start filling in.

It is the responsibility of a leader to recruit and train their replacement.  But, in a virtual world such as we have now, how do we find willing volunteers?  How do we get to know people? We still have telephone service. Leaders–look at the membership database and call people. Find someone you haven’t “seen” recently and renew an acquaintance. Or contact a new person to find out if they have a special need–or a special skill.

Your new contact may not be ready to take on a major volunteer role but perhaps would be willing to do a one time job or a small recurring job. Many people are just waiting to be asked to help. They may already be thinking about some way to help the society; they just need a suggestion.

And, new person, please don’t be shy.  If you see a way to help the society please speak up to any of the group leaders with a question or suggestion.  You will not be stepping on any toes by offering to help.

Tina Lawson Named One of 2022’s Outstanding Volunteers

Since 2003, the Washington State Genealogical Society has recognized over 600 outstanding volunteers and teams, nominated by their local society or genealogical organization for their service and dedication. These volunteers are the backbone of their local society, giving their time and expertise, to the organization and the field of genealogy. In the coming months, you will be introduced to each of the 2022 award recipients and learn why they received the 2022 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer and Team Award.

Today we’re introducing Tina Lawson of Auburn, Washington, who was nominated by the South King County Genealogical Society (SKCGS).

Tina joined SKCGS in February 2020, just in time to help us pivot to an online-only world. Soon after accepting the publicity team leader role, she began to actively administer the society’s Google Workspace, which was previously mostly unused. By creating a shared calendar, shared drives for each team, and improving the team email lists, she greatly facilitated the work of the board. Then she created an internal website, The Hub, for board volunteer use, along with hundreds of hours of private volunteer training.

SKCGS would not have been able to thrive without her invaluable support to the board and other volunteers. She has quietly given each of the members hours of her time, not just giving resources such as The Hub, but also individual help and training. “The Magic Show” (collaborative, participatory meetings) could not have existed without the support of the board and Tina’s technical and personal expertise.

For more information on the WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award program, visit the Recognition page of the WSGS website or contact Info@wasgs.org. Please type “Volunteer Award.”

Horace worked for Seattle District, Corps of Engineers, for 30 years; 7 years in Planning Branch and 23 years in the Design & Military Branches. In his position as the Seattle District Historical Architect and Program Manager of the Corps of Engineers National Center of Expertise (CX) for Preservation of Historic Structures and Buildings, Horace was responsible for Corps of Engineers technical assistance and coordination of national Historic Preservation Projects and Programs. He also assisted the Army and other Department of Defense agencies in developing historic preservation projects and programs.

In February 2011 Horace was appointed to the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation by President Barack Obama and also appointed the Board of Directors for the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training, Natchitoches, LA – May 2005 to 2019. He also has received four mayoral appointments for the City of Seattle since 1978 and three re-appointments. He served as a commissioner on the Seattle Planning Commission, Seattle Landmark Preservation Board, and Seattle Design Commission and was a member of the Board of Historic Seattle Preservation and Development Authority. SOUTH KING COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY
PO BOX 582
AUBURN, WASHINGTON 98071-0582

Going Virtual Team Named One of 2022’s Outstanding Teams

Since 2003, the Washington State Genealogical Society has recognized over 600 outstanding volunteers and teams, nominated by their local society or genealogical organization for their service and dedication. These volunteers are the backbone of their local society, giving their time and expertise, to the organization and the field of genealogy. In the coming months, you will be introduced to each of the 2022 award recipients and learn why they received the 2022 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer and Team Award.

Today we’re introducing the Going Virtual Team that was nominated by the South King County Genealogical Society (SKCGS). The team was comprised of MaryLynn Strickland and Valorie Zimmerman.

In March 2020 at the beginning of the COVID pandemic, SKCGS had only a beginning virtual foundation, using Groups IO as a member-and-friends forum to communicate topics of interest. SKCGS also had access to the free non-profit version of Google Enterprise and the board of directors had discussed implementing some features.

To capitalize on these assets and jump to complete virtual, MaryLynn and Valorie immediately began experimenting with Google Meet. Within two months, the society was meeting online for board and monthly general meetings, special interest groups for Family Tree Software Users, Genetic Genealogy, a new monthly Genealogy Chat and signup study group. Training was “immersive” – learn by doing, as MaryLynn and Valorie coaxed members along and enlisted others to help.

MaryLynn’s and Valorie’s enthusiastic, can-do attitude buoyed this effort from the beginning. Their give-and-take as virtual co-facilitators has inspired a lively, collaborative, participative approach in SKCGS meetings, with members/attendees from many different states.

For more information on the WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award program, visit the Recognition page of the WSGS website or contact Info@wasgs.org. Please type “Volunteer Award.”
