VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR THE
HIGHLAND GAMES

After a two year closure due to Covid, the Scottish Highland Games are back on for Saturday, July 23, 2022 and Sunday, July 24, 2022!

The Irish Heritage Club and SGS will share a double booth, display maps, and genealogy reference books for lookup of surnames of Scotland and Ireland. The Scottish Highland Games will be at the Fairgrounds in Enumclaw, WA. We have been participating for over 30 years and this community outreach program helps with our 4Culture grant. In past years over 30 thousand people have attended these games.

As a volunteer you will receive a free day use ticket in exchange for manning a 2 hour shift in our booth. Loads of fun…see the website for Seattle Scottish Highland Games at:  https://www.sshga.org/

If you can help, please call or text Jean Roth at 206-510-5202 ASAP. Please respond before June 30.

VIRTUAL SUNDAYS: SOMETHING OLD,
SOMETHING NEW

 JUNE 19, 2022

1:00-2:30pm on ZOOM

“FINDING TREASURES in ACADEMIC LIBRARIES”

Genealogists often look online at Ancestry and FamilySearch, repositories with a vast array of types of materials. Some might even be familiar with the county libraries close to their geographic area of interest. In this session three Academic Libraries, an overlooked resource, will be explored. These repositories will be important even if your ancestor never attended. You will see what can be found online and what you are missing if you do not visit them. General collections, special collections, and archives will be covered.

Jill Morelli is the presenter for “Virtual Sundays” which takes place via Zoom on the 3rd Sunday of each month. Jill is a certified genealogist, a writer, lecturer, and researcher specializing in methodology, the U.S. Midwest, and Scandinavia. As some of you know, in 2017 she founded the online “Certification Discussion Group,” sharing her journey and demystifying the process of submission of a portfolio to the Board for Certification of Genealogists. Jill is also past president of the Seattle Genealogical Society.

Please visit the  SGS Website Calendar of Events and register in advance for this presentation.

Heritage Quest Research Library Mapping an Ancestor

Janet O’Conor Camarata is a genealogist with over 30 years of experience.  Janet has presented at seminars, genealogy libraries and societies and retirement centers across Washington. Janet returns to Heritage Quest Research Library as one of our favorite presenters.   Mapping an Ancestor Researching Using Maps Geography is a discipline closely related to genealogy and an untapped resource for learning more about our ancestors.  Using geography and maps in research provides visual clues to help answer questions about where, how far, and what is nearby.  Learn about the George E. Curry family of Ohio and Kansas and how maps focused the research, located property, identified lost place names, solved a family mystery, and identified jurisdictions to write for records.
