BOOK EXCHANGE
The SGS Library has begun exchanging books and periodical issues with other genealogy libraries around the country.
Thus far, through this exchange, we have added 7 new books (conservatively valued at over $280) to our collection which bolstered our holdings for counties in Virginia and West Virginia. In return, we have either reimbursed the sender for postage, or exchanged some of SGS’ publications with them.
When the SGS Library offered our publications to other libraries, we received requests from seven other genealogical libraries. The response has been very positive.
One librarian checked her own family names in Edmond S Meany’s Living Pioneers of Washington, published by SGS in 1995, and found two family members with full articles, including the date their wagon train left Illinois, and a third relative is mentioned. She hopes to visit SGS in January 2019 when the American Library Association meets in Seattle.
This book exchange is an excellent way to raise our profile within the genealogy community!
GOT ACADIANS OR CAJUNS IN YOUR FAMILY TREE?
The SGS Library has a new section devoted to Acadia. The colony of New France in northeastern North America was known as Acadia. This includes areas of Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Maine. Acadians who resettled in Louisiana came to be known as Cajuns. You can find this new section under Canada (CAND/AC/) in the library, but for a while check for items for Acadia on the new acquisitions shelf.

Our guest speaker is Cyndi Ingles of Cyndi’s List – Cyndi is the creator, owner and “webmaster” of the award-winning web site Cyndi’s List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet, www.CyndisList.com, a categorized index to more than 335,000 online resources. In its first three years, Cyndi’s List was three times voted the best genealogy site on the World Wide Web. Cyndi has been interviewed for many television and radio broadcasts including ABC News, NBC News, the BBC, and National Public Radio. She has also participated in the Ancestors II television series on PBS. Cyndi, a genealogist for more than 35 years is a past-member of the board of directors for the National Genealogical Society. AMERICA’S TRANSPORTATION REVOLUTION:
MIGRATION and PROSPERITY
In the1800s America underwent a Transportation Revolution that greatly affected workers, farmers, and communities all across the nation. Dr. Austin Kerr, Ohio State University History Professor and member of Jefferson County Genealogical Society (JCGS), will share the story of his family to illustrate the changes and impacts of the Revolution on the movements of people and their economic opportunities. The public is invited to hear this free presentation at the monthly meeting of JCGS on Saturday morning, June 17, 9:30 – 11:30, at the Chimacum Grange, located across Hwy 19 from the Tri-Area Community Center in Chimacum. Society Management Classes Featured at NWGC

With special guest Elissa Scalise Powell
Elissa Scalise Powell, CG, CGL, is a Pennsylvania researcher and co-director of the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP). She is a past-president of the Board for Certification of Genealogists and coordinator of the IGHR “Professional Genealogy” course since 2007 She was an instructor for Boston University’s Genealogical Research Certificate course (2008-2016) and co-coordinator of SLIG’s 2013 “Credentialing: AG, CG, or Both?” course. She has also served as president of two local societies and has volunteered on society boards for over 25 years.
Fresh from the Southern California Genealogical Jamboree, Elissa will present an interesting program entitled Patriot or Not? – Using the GPS on a Closed DAR Line. This case study, concerning a man who is currently a patriot on a closed DAR line, goes through four questions in which the audience determines if the conclusions follow the Genealogical Proof Standard (GPS). The Colglazier family was said to be of Pennsylvania, but were they? Following each step of the migration backward from where they settled in Indiana to Ohio to their origins through land, probate, military, census, and tax lists, each question is laid out and analyzed through several analysis techniques.
There will not be an early session, so this meeting will begin a 7 pm. However, you are welcome to come earlier and visit.
These meetings will be held in our usual location at Bates Technical College, South Campus, 2201 South 78th St, Tacoma, Building E.
