Clallam County Genealogical Society Orphan Trains

Saturday, October 9th, the Clallam County Genealogical Society will host a Zoom presentation given by Michael Brophy, a nationally known professional genealogist.

His topic will be “The Orphan Train Movement: History, Genealogy, Legacy”.

The Orphan Trains operated between 1854 and 1929, transporting 200,000+ children from New York to the Midwest and beyond. Over two million descendants live on to tell the stories of this uniquely American movement through oral history, genealogy research with ongoing, careful care of the unique records.

Explore these ancestors in this unique lecture.

About Michael Brophy

Michael Brophy is an heir search specialist, researcher, and lecturer from the Boston area. He specializes in New England and Irish genealogy.

He has lectured on a wide variety of subjects at the National Genealogy Society’s Annual Conference in 2014, 2012 and 2011. His presentations include several Legacy webinars.

Mike was featured on the Irish TV series Dead Money, a genealogy TV show about heir searchers. In 2010, Mr. Brophy was hired to conduct research for the NBC television program Who Do You Think You Are? in an episode dedicated to the family history of actress Gwyneth Paltrow.

Mike earned an MBA degree from Suffolk University and a BBA from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. His genealogy education includes seven certificates from the Institute of Genealogy and Historic Research (IGHR) and certificates in Private Investigation and Advanced Forensic Genealogy from Boston University.

Lisa Louise Cooke found her passion for family history at her grandmother’s knee at the age of eight. She is presently one of the leading genealogist in America today, having written several books including The Genealogist’s Google Toolbox, How to Find you Family History in Newspapers and the video series, Google Earth for Genealogy.

She is the producer and Host of the Genealogy Gems Podcast, a popular online genealogy audio show available at www.GenealogyGems.com. She is also the producer and Host of the Family Tree Magazine Podcast, author of the Lisa’s Picks column in Family Tree Magazine and a curriculum developer and instructor for Family Tree University. She is sought after as a national and international speaker.

New Interest Group: Genealogy Travelers

Formation of a New Interest Group:  Genealogy Travelers

Clallam County Genealogical Society has a newly formed interest group, The Genealogy Travelers!  It is for anyone who enjoys going to archives, libraries, etc. near and far.  We have some initial trips planned for this summer within Washington. If you are interested in joining us, please call CCGS at 360-417-5000 and add your name to the roster, so we can notify you of upcoming events.   Members and non-members are welcome, so plan to bring along a genealogy friend.

Our first adventure will be to the Seattle Public Library (downtown) on Wednesday, June 5th.  If you would like to travel with us, please contact the CCGS Research Center by May 31st, so we can plan accordingly.   We will be sending out travel details next week, once we know how many folks will be traveling with us.    

Clallam County Genealogical Society Spring Seminar

Genealogical Spring Seminar featuring Janet O’Conor Camarata

Janet O’Conor Camarata will be the featured speaker at a Spring Seminar March 10th entitled Location, Location, Location!  hosted by the Genealogical Society of Clallam County.

 

She is a popular speaker much in demand for her remarkable presentations.  She has not only provided many seminars , but has also been a presenter at the Northwest Genealogy Conference, the Washington State Conference, and at other prominent events.  Her presentations are well organized, and enjoyable.

 

The program consists of four different sessions.  The morning session will include her lectures Beyond Maps: Location in Context, and Discover County Histories and the Family Stories They Tell.  In the afternoon she will explain how to understand and make the most of Survey Systems and General Land Office Records. 

 

Participants are asked to bring a sack lunch, however,  beverage and munchies will be served during the registration period and breaks.

 

The Seminar will be held at the Dungeness Valley Lutheran Church, 925 N. Sequim Ave. in Sequim.

Registration will begin at 8:30am and the program will end at 3:00 pm.

 

The cost of the seminar will be $35 for CCGS Members, $40 for non-members and registrants after Tuesday, March 6th and at the door.

George Ridgeway, Jr. Awarded 2016 Outstanding Volunteer Honor

Since 2003, the Washington State Genealogical Society has recognized almost 500 outstanding volunteers and teams, nominated by their local society or genealogical organization for their service and dedication. These volunteers are the backbone of their local society, giving their time and expertise, to the organization and the field of genealogy.  In the next few weeks, you will be introduced to each of last year’s award recipients and learn why they received the 2016 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer and Team Award.

George Ridgeway, Jr.

Today we’re introducing George Ridgeway, Jr. of Mount Vernon, Washington, who was nominated by the Skagit Valley Genealogical Society (SVGS). He was recognized for his generosity of time and energy dedicated to SVGS.

Mr. Ridgeway has served as the local society’s president, vice president and webmaster.  He has spent much of his time designing and maintaining the SVGS website. His most recent website additions include the addition of all newsletters since the organization of the society in 1987. He has added links for a blog, “Stories of our Ancestors” and a PayPal link allowing payment of membership dues and events. In addition, Mr. Ridgeway encouraged SVGS to hold an educational program series for beginners in Anacortes and Burlington, beginning in 2015 and still in operation.

Dedicated volunteers like Mr. Ridgeway are prized assets to any organization. That is why he richly deserved being a recipient of a 2016 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award.

Gail Porter

Today we’re introducing Gail Porter of Port Angeles, Washington, who was nominated by the Clallam County Genealogical Society (CCGS). She was recognized for her enthusiasm and willingness to take on challenging projects.

Although Ms. Porter has been the CCGS treasurer for five years, in 2016 she undertook the project of organizing the genealogies of the Clallam County pioneer families. This was no small project as there were more than 200 pioneer families and she had to sort through a hodgepodge of information. Using her organizational skills, she sorted them by family groups and is now in the process of indexing the information for inclusion on the CCGS web page. She has spent an average of 40 hours a week over the past eight months on this project.

Ms. Porter also makes herself available to all comers seeking assistance with their personal family genealogies, devoting many hours and donating her fees back to the society. This commitment to the CCGS and field of genealogy illustrate that she richly deserved being a recipient of a 2016 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award.
