Call to Volunteers – Let the Book Labeling Live On!

Books2

Remember all those wonderful French-Canadian genealogy books we brought down from a very generous donor in North Portland? Well, we’re currently getting them ready for general research consumption, but WE NEED YOUR HELP again!!
We’re looking for a very special volunteer, or couple of volunteers, to help with creating and binding spine labels to a cart-full of the smaller items that came with the French-Canadian resource collection.
The tasks this project involves are especially for those who enjoy taking pride in detail-oriented, and sometimes repetitive, work that has a huge impact as to encouraging visibility and overall use of priceless resource materials.

If you’re interested in this short-term project, please contact our wonderful and lovely president, Laurel Smith, at president@gfo.org.

Remember the Cuffs of Ms. Violette Pearl?

Pearl

You may remember her as the lady with the velvet cuffs…
The cover story of the GFO’s quarterly publication, The Bulletin, from December 2015 told of a Violette Pearl Willcox and her famous velvet cuffs that had disappeared into all but family legend.

This week those cuffs were found and we wanted to make sure to share their loveliness with you all!

You didn’t get to read that Bulletin article, you say!? You are receiving our quarterly publications?? Sign up for GFO membership today to fix this problem by clicking HERE.

You’ve Done It!! You’ve “got Germans” for the GFO!!!

GermanMap

A very special ‘danke’ goes out to each and every one of our very generous donors! With all of the donations received we are very pleased to report that we have successfully met our goal for the “got Germans” campaign!

The GFO will now be able to advance on their purchase of the entire set of Map Guides to German Parish Registers.

These books are widely considered a definitive reference guide and time-saver for German genealogical research, and who doesn’t love to save time and get results? Now, the GFO can get all 55 volumes for the library’s collection, filling a hole in our German genealogical research section. And, through special arrangement, the publisher has agreed to give GFO a 15% discount on this large purchase when we order them. Look for these guides soon on our Library shelves.

Our sincere thanks again to each and everyone who has donated to make this purchase possible and help improve GFO’s German collection!

Sincerely,
Liz Stepp and Laurel Smith

FamilySearch Worldwide Indexing Event Announcement
From July 15-17, FamilySearch International and supporting organizations are coordinating the single largest gathering of volunteers online from around the world to help in the noble effort to save, and increase access to, the world’s genealogically significant historical records. With a target of 75,000 online volunteers for the weekend event and a stretch goal of more than 200,000, you and your network of friends and colleagues can make a real difference. Remember, every historic record tells the unique story of someone’s ancestor and helps make a personal connection. Until that record is easily discoverable online, that ancestor’s story and their place in the family tree, remains untold.

Please visit https://familysearch.org/worldsrecords for information on the world indexing event and how you can participate this weekend.
