FROM OUR SGS PRESIDENT

To the SGS Membership:

A major item of concern in our recent move was what to do with the items in our collection that we were not going to keep. Following guidance from our Bylaws, we gave the genealogy group at the Seattle Public Library (SPL) the right of first refusal on all remaining items in the collection. John LaMont of SPL estimates that they have taken around 450 linear feet (shelf space) of books and periodicals to SPL. The next group given the opportunity to obtain items from the collection was our membership, which was done via a two-day bargain-basement sale that saw roughly 1,000 additional items re-homed. Other local genealogical groups were given the opportunity to obtain materials, and a few of them took us up on our offer. We have also shipped several boxes of old school yearbooks to Ancestry.com, and will be shipping several boxes of old records (obits and the like) to FamilySearch to be scanned, digitized, and made part of their collection.

Finally, the majority of remaining non-periodical items (roughly 100 book boxes) are being placed in temporary storage to be donated to the OpenLibrary program of the Internet Archive (google Internet Archive for information). This organization scans and digitizes materials donated to them, and makes the material available on their website for anyone to use.  This will open up that part of our collection to the entire world of genealogy.

So, while the physical size of the SGS collection has been significantly reduced, most of what we removed from the collection lives on elsewhere, and much of that will continue to be accessible by SGS members, either at the SPL main library or online.

Jim Secan
President, Seattle Genealogical Society

Seattle Genealogical Society Tip of the Week 1921 Census of England and Wales

TIP OF THE WEEK –
1921 CENSUS OF ENGLAND AND WALES

The National Archives of the UK has announced the 1921 Census of England and Wales will be available online at Findmypast beginning January 6, 2022. This census is especially important since the 1931 census was destroyed by fire and no census was taken in 1941 because of World War II.

RECAP OF NOVEMBER 21ST

A video tour of our new facility at Good Shepherd Center in Wallingford premiered at the SGS Virtual Holiday Party on Sunday, November 21. If you missed it, a link to the video is now posted on the SGS website home page. Many thanks to Jim Secan for hosting the tour, Jill Morelli for filming, and Grace Clark for film editing and captions.

Participants in this meeting were polled to select a topic for the upcoming meeting in December. By a narrow margin, the subject “Using Timelines for Analysis and Correlation” was chosen.  If you’d like a say in the selection of a topic for the January 2022 meeting, show up at the Sunday, December 19, 2021 meeting from 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm.

VOLUNTEERS OF THE QUARTER
CARY BRIGHT & CRAIG GOWENS

Each quarter the Seattle Genealogical Society recognizes one member as our volunteer of the quarter. For the Fall Quarter 2021, we are recognizing the team of Cary Bright and Craig Gowens, co-leaders of the DNA SIG.

Ceil Rogers, SGS Director of Education, announced these two were chosen because “They have led the way and set the example for keeping SGS’s special interest groups active during the pandemic.”

Cary has been an SGS member for 21 years and has co-chaired the DNA group since 2009, inspired, she says, “by the vision of the late Jim Gunderson.” She added she is deeply grateful for all the knowledge her other co-chairs, Herb McDaniels followed by Craig Gowens, have shared over the years.

Cary Bright enjoys finding tools for different learning styles and says “I love working with adult learners.” For her, the greatest satisfaction comes when helping someone find resources that dovetail with how they process information. “Embrace how you learn and find tools that work with your learning style,” she advises.

Over time, group members have expanded their comfort zone working with DNA results. “What was once daunting is grasped as we all learn together,” Cary said. “The deer-in- the-headlights looks are fewer. … I love the success stories we hear about from group members.” She recommends that anyone wanting to learn about DNA should seek out knowledge in blogs, YouTube videos and online classes.

“DNA matches are just another resource to prove or disprove a connection to an ancestor,” Cary says. “Easily missed, but a great facet of proof when the matches align at the right time and testing company!”

Craig Gowens is a Texas transplant with deep Southern roots. He joined SGS shortly after moving to the Seattle area from Austin, Texas, back in March 2019. In Texas, he had been active in DNA groups of both the Austin and Williamson County genealogical societies, so it was natural for him to approach Cary Bright offering to help. “She immediately put me to work and just a few weeks later I gave a presentation at that June’s SGS DNA SIG meeting,” Craig recalls.

As someone who works from home, Craig thinks “Participating in organizations like SGS provides me with the social interaction I lack from a workplace environment. I like meeting new people and discussing, learning, and teaching concepts and techniques.”

Craig has been into genealogy since childhood. His father was interested in it and he would accompany his father to the library and help out.

Both of Craig’s parents have deep Southern roots, going back to the mid-1800s in the southern Ozarks of Arkansas and the hills and hollows of central Tennessee. His most recent discovery involved using DNA to piece together the family of his 3rd great grandmother, Lucy Smith. The courthouse of the county of her birth had gone up in flames so there were few records to go by. After much analysis of information gleaned from 320 DNA matches, Craig was able to narrow down that his ancestor was one of six sisters born between 1818 to 1832 in Georgia or Tennessee. “This type of genealogy would have been impossible even 10 years ago,” he says.

When he’s not digging into DNA, Craig can be found shooting photos in National Parks and other natural areas.

Beginning on Monday, 8 November 2021, the SGS Library will be open at its new location at the Good Shepherd Center on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Due to COVID restrictions, we are limiting the total number of people in the space to six, which means we are limited to four library patrons on Mondays and Tuesdays and five patrons on Fridays and Saturdays. We will also continue to require visitors to wear masks while in the building.

Because we need to limit the number of people in the space at any one time, please call ahead to see if the library is already at or near capacity before you come down. We have the same phone number:  (206) 522-8658.

NOTE: There is a possibility that we will not have our connection with Family Search in place when we reopen (network assignment issues); therefore, if you want to use our Affiliate Library status to access locked materials, you should call before you come in.

See the SGS website for directions to our new location and parking information.

And welcome back!

Jim Secan
President, Seattle Genealogical Society

Jewish Genealogical Society of Washington State,
“Jewish Genealogy in the Germanies” with Roger Lustig,
Monday, November 8, 2021, Via Zoom
6:00 PM – 8:00 PM PDT

Roger Lustig is an expert on general German Jewish research and history. He is also a native German speaker.

The Germany where your ancestors lived is not the Germany of today. Before unification in 1871, Germany was more a concept than a state. It was composed of dozens of kingdoms, duchies, and principalities large and small. People doing non-Jewish research in the Germanies will get an incredible amount of information out of Roger’s talk, too.

The Zoom meeting doors will open at 5:30 pm for networking.

Roger’s presentation will begin at 6:00 pm. This presentation is free.  All are invited. Registration is required.  To register, visit the JGSWS website:

Seattle Genealogical Society Tip of the Week Learn the Leeds Method

TIP OF THE WEEK –
LEARN THE LEEDS METHOD
WITH A VIDEO

The Leeds Method is simple, useful, and visual. After doing it once, you might comment “Gee, why didn’t I think of that?”. This method can be especially helpful for an adoptee or for someone with an unknown parent or grandparent.

In the Leeds Method you are organizing your DNA matches; therefore, generating hints for yourself by grouping your DNA matches according to shared (in common) DNA. Your matches are color coded and displayed in columns in a table.

In the purest form you will end up with 4 columns, each representing one of your grandparents’ family line. Then you must further evaluate each column of shared DNA matches by doing traditional genealogy.

You can learn the steps and  more about the Leeds Method at Dana Leeds’ website:
https://www.danaleeds.com/

But, since the Leeds Method is so visual, why not get a quick start by watching Dana’s presentation at RootsTech 2019.  In the video, she is the third speaker in the hour-long Power Hour Session entitled “You Can Do DNA”. In this video, there are 3 speakers and 3 subjects:

“Do: The Right Test”  with Christi Jacobsen
“Do: Understand Your Ethnicity” with Diahan Southard
“Do: Work on Your Matches” with Dana Leeds

Watch the entire video or skip to about 40 minutes to see Dana’s presentation.

Seattle Genealogical Society News

IN MEMORY

Sadly, over the last few months, several longtime members of the Seattle Genealogical Society have been lost. They served as volunteers, on committees, and on the board. Each was a special friend to the Society and they will be missed. Join us in extending condolences to their families.

CHRISTINE E PULLIAM
1934 – 2021

Christine Pulliam passed away January 20, 2021.  In life, she was a teacher, a successful business owner, a mother, a grandmother, and a world traveler on all seven continents!

Her family recalls that next to her love of family, her greatest passion in life was genealogy research. Her genealogy library contained numerous files, thousands of records, and she had countless genealogy conferences under her belt.

Christine was a Life Member of SGS from 1984-2021. She served as SGS Vice President 1988-89. In 1991, she published in the SGS Bulletin a Directory of local Family History Centers and Libraries available for genealogical research. In 2015, she donated an extensive collection of local newspaper obituaries. They are being scanned and indexed to become part of our digital database resources. Christine remembered SGS with a bequest from her estate which will be put to good use in our new location.

DANIEL P HARMON
1938 – 2021

Dan Harmon passed away July 25, 2021. He was a Life Member of SGS, joining in 1996. He was on the Board serving as Director of the Library 2013-2015 and Director of Publications 2015-2017.

Dan received both his MA and PhD in Classical Languages, Literature and Linguistics from Northwestern University.  Dr Daniel P Harmon’s entire career, 1967-2004, was spent in the Department of Classics at the University of Washington. Numerous students left memories of how fortunate they felt to have been taught by Professor Harmon.

MARY FIELDS STOEBUCK
1929 – 2021

Mary Stoebuck passed away August 25, 2021. She was an active member of SGS for thirty-three years, 1983-2016. In 1988-89,  she was on the three-member “space committee” that arranged the big SGS move from the Jones Building to 5th & Union. She was a speaker for the SGS 65th Anniversary and “Celebration of a Century” (the Washington State Centennial),  presenting a talk on  “Basic Genealogical Research-Part II: Census, Research Libraries, Immigration & Naturalization”. Mary was a founder and the first VP for the Fiske Genealogical Library.

Her family recalls that Mary not only researched their own families, the Fields and Stoebucks, she aided countless others she met through the Seattle Public Library, the National Archives, the LDS libraries, SGS, DAR, and the Fiske with their research.

Like others mentioned here today, there was teaching in Mary’s background. She graduated from Wichita State in 1951 with a BA in Home Economics, a minor in Mathematics, and a Kansas Teacher’s Certificate for Secondary Education.

PATRICIA J YOUNIE
1932 – 2021

Pat Younie passed away September 10, 2021. Right up until that time, she stayed involved with her homeowners association and with the Archives Committee at SGS. Her fellow committee members, and others, remember her for her knowledge, wit, and work ethic. Under her guidance as chair, the Archives Committee successfully processed a decades-long backlog of donated materials. And they laughed a lot and had fun doing it.

Pat was SGS Director of Library 2001-2002 and Desk Volunteer Coordinator 2009-2010. She joined SGS in 1994. She was in the Irish SIG and often volunteered for Irish Week, the Highland Games, and SGS Seminars. These are just a few of her contributions.

Take some time to play the wonderful Tribute Video her family compiled. It is on her memorial web page:

RICHARD F AMBUR
1936 – 2021

Dick died September 20, 2021, at home, surrounded by his family.

Dick graduated from the University of Washington, Medical School, in 1961, and joined the Navy. He spent ten years in the Navy, including a stint in Viet Nam. After leaving the military, with an honorable discharge and the rank of Commander, Dr Richard F Ambur established his private medical practice in Bremerton, WA.

Dick joined SGS in 1990 and was a Life Member. He was a volunteer and donor who helped with the “heavy lifting”, literally. He served on the Seminar committee, set-up, take-down, trucking, and sound systems. He even donated a sound system. He also served at community outreach events like the Scottish Highland Games, and as a Desk Volunteer. Over and over, Dick is described by fellow SGS members as the nicest guy.

Our speaker, Ari Wilkins, is a genealogist and librarian from Texas with “boots on the ground” experience. Her knowledge of records of the south and of genealogical methodology in general is extraordinary. Besides all that, she is a wonderful speaker. Her topics are important for all genealogists, especially those with ancestors in the south. Come and learn something new!
  Seminar Topics
Black and White Southern Families in Southern Plantation Records
Learn about the genealogical value of the Southern Antebellum Plantation Records – how they are organized, how to search the collection, and apply it towards your genealogical research. The case studies will highlight the personal documents of a white Southern family and the indirect documentation of an African American family.
  Mysterious Relatives
Many researchers encounter mysterious persons living in the household of a relative; or a letter signed by an unknown ‘cousin.’  As a researcher, it is important to investigate and understand the relationship between these strangers and your person of interest. This lecture will discuss cluster research methodology.
Reconstructing Communities Using Sanborn Maps, Census Records, and City Directories
Recreating neighborhoods can provide rich and insightful details about an ancestor’s life and surroundings. This lecture will demonstrate ways to build a map using Sanborn Fire insurance maps, census records, and city directories in Google Maps.

Friends of Friends: Quakers and African American Communities Well-known for their anti-slavery views, Quakers began to migrate to the slave-free territories in the 19th century. As they migrated out of the South, Quakers emancipated and traveled with their newly freed slaves. Once settled, the sect continued their abolitionist cause by supporting the Underground Railroad – transporting runaway slaves to free states. In turn, free blacks established their own settlements, while still maintaining ties with the Quaker community.
