The Washington State Archives is in the process of digitizing and putting online the Territorial Court Case files. These records, dating from 1853 to 1889, is a treasure trove of historical documentation of life in the Washington Territory during its frontier period. Horse thieves and prostitutes, poisoners and pests encountered the legal system of the day. The case files are both a Who’s Who of territorial Washington and a window into the lives of individuals who left no other trace in the historical record. Dr. Larry Cebula and Tim Harrington, will describe the status of the digitization effort and highlight some of the more interesting cases.
Start Time Note: Meeting actually starts at 1:00 pm but all, including Zoom, is open at 12:30 PM. The meeting usually ends around 3:00 pm.

The speaker will share stories about German Advent, Christmas and New Year’s traditions for the period from December 1st to Epiphany, with superstitions thrown in.

Ingeborg was born in Frankfurt, Germany, raised in Westphalia, and immigrated to America in 1972. She is very active in genealogy and is currently the President of the Sacramento German Genealogy Society and of the International German Genealogy Partnership.

Our annual business meeting will begin at 6:15 and is expected to take approx. 30 minutes. We will be voting on a slate of officers and proposed changes to the bylaws. Bio: Donna Snider is Director of the Camano-Stanwood FamilySearch Center on nearby Camano Island. Her life-long love of family history propelled her through many hours of recording memories for the elderly, through several college genealogy classes, and through a B.A. in gerontology at Brigham Young University. She has taught a variety of genealogical classes over the last several decades, and her specialty is teaching others how to easily steer through the extensive FamilySearch.org program.
There will be a short break with refreshments. The monthly meeting will follow.

Following the business portion of the meeting there will be a presentation by Nancy E. Loe, MA, MLS on Finding Females in US Naturalization Records, 1790-1952. Nancy’s bio is as follows:
Archivist, librarian, and genealogist Nancy Loe has been helping researchers with their family trees since 1977. From her time interning at the Smithsonian archives as a grad student to her current work as a genealogist, working with primary sources has been her life’s work. Nancy specializes in US and European family history research, presenting at major conferences and via webinars in the US, Canada, and Australia. Nancy’s genealogy e-books and free monthly newsletter are available at sassyjanegenealogy.com.

Strauss presents “Following the Tracks: Your Ancestors on the Railroad” Railroads for nearly two centuries have been the preferred mode of transportation for many of our ancestors. Their rich history includes details on when lines started, ceased, merged, or filed bankruptcy. Records including employee, manuscripts, directories, pensions, social security, and other organizations including the Pullman Porters and Harvey Girls are examined.
Michael L. Strauss, AG has been employed as a forensic investigator for thirty years, most recently he has worked as a research manager for Ancestry ProGenealogists. Michael is a native of Pennsylvania and a veteran of the United States Coast Guard. He is a court qualified expert witness in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Michael is a national genealogical lecturer and instructor and is a faculty member at Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG), Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP), and the Institute of Genealogical and Historical Research (IGHR) where he coordinates the military history and research courses. Michael was the film historian for the 2015 Academy Award nominated movie Finding Vivian Maier and has been involved in Civil War and Mexican American War reenacting for more than twenty-five years.
