PUTTING YOUR ANCESTORS IN THEIR PLACE…AND TIME:

TIMELINES, CHRONOLOGIES, AND CALCULATORS

Jefferson Co GS

To understand an ancestor’s life, genealogists use timelines, chronologies, and online calculators to summarize a life and identify interconnected historical events. These methods are not to be missed as they can show us how ancestors are interconnected with each other; how their lives are connected to history; identifies discrepancies and inconsistencies; reveals additional areas for further research; and will ease the work of writing a memoir, a family history, or an obituary.

Jefferson County Genealogical Society (JCGS) www.wajcgs.org has invited Professional Genealogist, Janet Camarata, to be their speaker during a full-day Seminar on Saturday, September 17, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Tri-Area Community Center, 10 W. Valley Rd, Chimacum. A donation of $10.00 for the full-day Seminar is suggested. Janet’s topic “Putting Your Ancestors in Their Place…and Time: Timelines, Chronologies and Calculators” will demonstrate how these methods worked to help understand a family’s mid-1800s migration from Kentucky to Missouri to Kansas. Members and friends of JCGS are invited to learn about Timelines and Chronologies in the morning, while in the afternoon Janet will present Calculating Our Ancestors’ Lives that compares the life of your ancestor with your own life using online tools for computing inflation, cousins, distance, weather, etc. Bring your own lunch; coffee/tea/water will be available. In addition Heritage Books will be on site offering for sale a large selection of genealogy books and other items for family history researchers.

Janet O’Conor Camarata tells her family’s stories using all the benefits of genealogy, history, the internet and the latest computing tools. She is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists and is an experienced instructor.

LOOKING BEYOND THE DEEDS

When researching your family history, land records can be a “treasure chest” of information. Deeds and transfer of ownership are only half the story! Understanding survey systems, survey maps, and connected survey maps can answer questions like nothing else. Mapping your findings can be fun and illuminating. The public is welcome to hear about using this additional research avenue at the Jefferson County Genealogical Society (JCGS) monthly meeting on Saturday, June 18 at the Tri-Area Community Center, 10 W. Valley Rd.  Come at 9:30 A.M. for coffee/tea; 10:00 – 11:30 for the program.  Donations to JCGS are gratefully accepted to bring future guest speakers into our area.

Eric Stroschein photo

JCGS is delighted to bring this month’s speaker, Eric Stroschein, a professional Forensic Genealogist from Mt. Vernon, WA to the Quimper Peninsula. He and his wife Karen own “Generations Detective”, a genealogical research firm where he specializes in resolving difficult genealogical questions using land records as an important resource in his work. One case used over 250 individual pieces of evidence including deeds, surveys and connected survey maps of the county to pinpoint the locations of dozens of people, proving their town had been covered by a reservoir. When Eric is not researching, he can be found at his ‘day job’ driving a fire engine for the Seattle Fire Department where he is a 26-year veteran. Eric serves on the Board of the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG) and is Chairperson of the Advocacy Committee. He also serves as a representative on the Records Preservation and Access Committee for the Federation of Genealogical Societies. He is past President of the Puget Sound Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists and is in his second term as a Board member of the International Society for British Genealogy and Family History.

Mary Stolaas Named Outstanding Volunteer in 2015

Since 2003, the Washington State Genealogical Society has recognized more than 450 outstanding volunteers and teams, nominated by their local society or genealogical organization for their service and dedication. These volunteers are the backbone of their local society, giving their time and expertise, to the organization and the field of genealogy. In the next month, you will be introduced to each of the 2015 award recipients and learn why they received the 2015 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer and Team Award.

Today we’re introducing Mary Stolaas of Nordland, Washington, who was nominated by the Jefferson County Genealogical Society (JCGS). She was recognized for her dedicated volunteer efforts to expand and simplify local library resources.

Mary Stolaas

Mary Stolaas

As a retired librarian, Ms. Stolaas took on the job of reorganizing JCGS’s library of over 2,000 books and CD’s to conform to the Dewey Decimal System. Over the last few months, Ms. Stolaas has made the entire collection available online, using a program called “Library Thing.” As a result, JCGS members can now access the Library Things website and look for a resource by using a keyword to see whether the book or CD is available. Members no longer have to know the specific title or author to locate the book or CD. “Library Thing” also allows the user to search other libraries in its network, thus expanding the availability of genealogical resources.

Ms. Stolaas is a detail-oriented and respected member of the JCGS, and illustrates that she richly deserved being a recipient of a 2015 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award.

For more information on the WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award program, visit the Recognition page of the WSGS website or contact Roxanne Lowe, Recognition Chair, at Roxanne@thekeeffes.com.

Many people have had their DNA tested only to get confusing results and don’t know how to utilize them. Mary Kathryn Kozy, a knowledgeable and favorite speaker at the monthly meetings of Jefferson County Genealogical Society (JCGS), plans to help all of us learn what DNA testing is, what it can (and can’t) tell you, and give you some help interpreting those results from your autosomal and/or Y-DNA testing.

A BROOK WITHOUT A SOURCE

A Chinese proverb says: “To forget one’s ancestors is to be a brook without a source, a tree without a root”. Family historians often hope to leave stories to their descendants about ancestors they have identified or have known. If you have never written a story about an ancestor, but wish you could, or if you have written stories but would like to make them better, come to a free presentation “Writing Family Stories: A Toolkit” given by Wendy Call, writer, author, editor, translator, and educator. She has been the winner of a national book prize for nonfiction, and served as writer-in-residence at twenty-two institutions including five national parks, a historical society, universities and colleges. In addition, she has completed research in archives in the United States, Latin America, and Europe and currently teaches creative writing at Pacific Lutheran University and Goddard College.

This presentation will be at the March meeting of the Jefferson County Genealogy Society (JCGS) on Saturday, March 19th, 10:00 a.m. – 11:30, in the Tri-Area Community Center, 10 W. Valley Rd. in Chimacum. Come early at 9:30 for the monthly meet and visit. Following the presentation at noon, there will be a writing workshop led by Wendy for only 15 people. Each person can receive individual attention. Cost of the workshop is $15. Participants are invited to bring a lunch; coffee & tea provided. Go to the JCGS website <www.wajcgs.org> for required workshop pre-registration before March 12 or to receive other information.
