ABOUT OUR PROGRAM: “Breaking Down Brick Walls”

Everyone has them: family lines that seem to have defied every effort to push them back farther in time. (Don’t have a brick wall yet? Just wait. You probably haven’t been doing family history long enough!) This presentation will discuss how you might be adding to that wall yourself, brick by brick, with some common research mistakes. We will also discuss several simple steps you can take to reevaluate where you are in the research process. Using the Genealogical Proof Standard, we will walk through methodologies that, when applied to your problem, may give you greater insight. Who knows? Perhaps looking at your genealogical problem with a fresh perspective will cause that brick wall to come tumbling down in 2019!

ABOUT OUR SPEAKER

Mary Kathryn Kozy has been working on her own family history for almost 40 years, since she first became interested as a young teenager. Over the years she has researched families in the United States from the Midwest to the Deep South, and from both Western and Eastern Europe. She started her own family history website in November 1996 and has continued developing it. She has served in multiple positions in several local societies and on the state level. She currently supports the USGenWeb project, serves as a part-time LDS Family History missionary, and speaks to many groups in the area. Mary is married, the mother of three wonderful children, and is now a grandma of three. She holds bachelor’s degrees from UW in both Zoology and Information Technology & Systems and has completed two certificate programs with the National Institute for Genealogical Studies. She has also completed the ProGen program with an eye toward certification as a professional genealogist.

ABOUT OUR PROGRAM: “”DNA Successes–Despite Endogamy!””

Genetic genealogy is much more complicated when dealing with endogamous populations than the general population, and many people get frustrated when trying to identify actual relatives from the mass of genetic cousins, who are actually related in many ways quite far back. Learn how you can have success when dealing with endogamy by examining stories from the speaker’s own family’s DNA, which include reuniting with branches thought killed in the Holocaust.

 

ABOUT OUR SPEAKER

Lara Diamond is President of Jewish Genealogical Society of Maryland and has been researching her family for 25 years. She has traced all branches of her family back to Europe and most multiple generations back in Europe using Russian Empire-era and Austria-Hungarian Empire records. Most of her research is in modern-day Ukraine, with a smattering of Belarus and Poland. She leads JewishGen’s Subcarpathia SIG, is on the Ukraine Sig board and also runs several town-focused projects to collect documentation to assist all those researching ancestors from common towns. ABOUT OUR PROGRAM: “Using Online Historical Jewish Newspapers for Genealogical Research”    

Many historical Jewish newspapers are now available online, with more being added regularly. Most are on free sites. This presentation gives an overview of which ones are online and where they can be found, suggests access strategies, discusses what to do if you don’t read Hebrew or Yiddish, and shows sample search results.

 

ABOUT OUR SPEAKER

Janice Sellers, a professional genealogist, has been researching her family since 1975 and has conducted genealogical research for others since 2005. She is the editor of four genealogical periodicals: ZichronNote, the journal of the San Francisco Bay Area Jewish Genealogical Society (SFBAJGS); The Baobab Tree, the journal of the African American Genealogical Society of Northern California (AAGSNC); The California Nugget, the semiannual journal of the California Genealogical Society; and the CSGA Newsletter, the newsletter of the California State Genealogical Alliance. She is also the vice president and publicity & programming director for San Francisco Bay Area Jewish Genealogical Society, board member and journal committee chairman for AAGSNC, board member for CSGA, and a staff member of the Oakland Regional Family History Center since 2000.

Janice has a B.A. in French with minors in Spanish and Russian and has completed graduate studies in library and information science, computer programming, and music. She has worked as an editor, indexer, and translator since 1983. Her genealogical areas of specialization are in family history research for the 18th-21st centuries, specializing in Jewish, black American, newspaper, and forensic genealogy.

Our speaker will be Emily H. Garber, Genealogical Lecturer, Blogger, and Author and her topic will be:  “When It Takes A Village: Applying Cluster Research Techniques.”

ABOUT OUR PROGRAM

Sometimes tracking one’s immigrant ancestors tests all one’s research acumen. Identifying a subject ancestor, his/her origins, and parentage; tracking that subject through time; and constructing biographies to place that person in his/her social context is best approached by broadening one’s research to include other family members, associates and neighbors. This presentation by Emily Garber will outline a program for solving genealogical research problems via cluster and collateral research techniques. Topics will include: appropriate application, research planning, commonly used resources and documents, and case studies successfully tracking individuals from Europe to the United States, overcoming name and residential changes and using DNA evidence.

The main case study to be used in this evening’s program tracks a previously unknown woman who arrived at Ellis Island with Emily’s great grandfather.  Emily uses her research skills to identify this unknown woman’s kinship relationship to their family and to find out if there ever was a relationship.

 

ABOUT OUR SPEAKER

An archaeologist by training (B.A. and M.A.), Emily H. Garber has been researching her Jewish ancestry since 2007 and holds a certificate from Boston University’s Genealogical Research program. She specializes in Jewish genealogical research and has worked with records for both German-Jewish and Eastern European Jewish immigrants. Her client work has included research into narrowly defined genealogical problems as well as development and writing of broadly based family history narratives. In June 2013, she toured family shtetlach in Ukraine and explored archives in Lviv, Khmelnitsky and Zhitomyr. She is chair of the Phoenix (Arizona) Jewish Genealogical Group, board member of the Arizona Jewish Historical Society, owner of Extra Yad Genealogical Services, and she blogs at http://www.extrayad.blogspot.com. Emily has served for several years as one of the moderators of the JewishGen Discussion Group and is communications director of the Ukraine Special Interest Group.

Natalie Stien Awarded 2017 Outstanding Volunteer Honor

Since 2003, the Washington State Genealogical Society has recognized over 500 outstanding volunteers and teams, nominated by their local society or genealogical organization for their service and dedication. These volunteers are the backbone of their local society, giving their time and expertise, to the organization and the field of genealogy. In the coming months, you will be introduced to each of the 2017 award recipients and learn why they received the 2017 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer and Team Award.

Natalie Stien

Today we’re introducing Natalie Stien of Redmond, Washington, who was nominated by the Jewish Genealogical Society of Washington State (JGSWS). She was recognized for her dedication to excellence during the 2016 International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies annual (IAJGS) conference in Seattle.

Ms. Stien joined JGSWS in 2004, volunteering right away for various positions. However, her commitment to getting the job done right was exemplified when JGSWS co-hosted the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies Annual (IAJGS) Conference in Seattle in August 2016. Ms. Stien served as a volunteer co-chair, a monumental job coordinating dozens of volunteers for the six-day conference. She was the first to arrive and the last to leave every day of the conference, often working 15-hour days. Her responsibilities included determining where volunteers would be needed, finding and adopting a software program that volunteers could use to sign themselves up for specific tasks and time slots, and dealing with last-minute schedule changes.

According to fellow JGSWS board members, Ms. Stien was often the first to volunteer for any extra tasks needed to support the organization. This display of dedication illustrates that Ms. Stien richly deserved being a recipient of a 2017 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award.

Mary Kathryn (Crews) Kozy

Today we’re introducing Mary Kathryn Kozy of Kent, Washington, who was nominated by the Jewish Genealogical Society of Washington State (JGSWS). She was recognized for her exceptional leadership and consistent support of the JGSWS.

Ms. Kozy has been an active member of the JGSWS for nine years. She has enthusiastically served on the society’s board for the past seven years, holding various board and volunteer positions, including president and secretary. She currently serves as the membership chair. Ms. Kozy is always quick to help society members with their research questions and has presented a number of programs to the society, particularly on DNA topics. She has been involved in many genealogical projects over the years including FamilySearch indexing, maintaining USGenWeb websites, records transcription projects, lecturing and teaching. She currently serves as an LDS Family History Missionary.

Ms. Kozy is a respected, dedicated member of the JGSWS, and richly deserved being a recipient of a 2017 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award.

ABOUT OUR PROGRAM:  As more and more people decide to DNA test, the bigger our match lists become! With somewhere close to eight million people in the test pool amongst the four major companies, we have many more matches to deal with. What does one DO with them all? How can we organize them? What are the best practices for sorting them out, especially when dealing with endogamous populations? This lecture will focus somewhat on the use of various tools at the DNA testing companies, but will also deal with several case studies in actually finding the relationships between various unknown individuals. What if the DNA match has no tree? Is it hopeless? Absolutely not! Come learn some tips and techniques for taking those matches and turning them into family.

“Reclaim The Records: Genealogy Fought the Law and Won” (How to Use State Freedom of Information Laws for Genealogy) , presented by Brooke Schreier Ganz

ABOUT OUR PROGRAM:  Tired of being told by state and local archives and government agencies that your family’s genealogical records are “unavailable” to the public or only available if you visit them onsite? We were too, so we figured out what to do about it. We’re Reclaim The Records, a new activist group that filed a first-of-its-kind Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) legal petition in the Supreme Court of New York against the NYC Municipal Archives in order to access to twentieth century genealogical records…and won! We also secured the first-ever public release of the indices to hundreds of thousands of vital records from the New Jersey State Archives. And we’re filing many more requests against city and state agencies, large and small. This presentation will tell the story behind these cases, walk through the legal basics of FOIL, and teach genealogists how to file their own FOIL requests for their own records.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKER:  Brooke Schreier Ganz is the founder of Reclaim The Records, a not-for-profit activist group that uses state Freedom of Information requests to return genealogical records to the public. As the former Vice President of Gesher Galicia, she designed and built their website, including its innovative “All Galicia Database”. The underlying search engine codebase, named “LeafSeek,” was released by Brooke as a free open source project, for which she won second place in the 2012 RootsTech Developer Challenge. She further refined it to build the bilingual “All Israel Database” for the Israel Genealogical Research Association (IGRA). She lives in California
