Whitman County Gen Society Newsflash…Save the Date!!
SAVE THE DATE We will have a spring program on Sat., April 30 in the morning at the Social Room of Bishop Place Independent Senior Living, SE 811 Klemgard, Pullman. Wanda Alderman Honored as 2015 Outstanding Volunteer
Since 2003, the Washington State Genealogical Society has recognized more than 450 outstanding volunteers, nominated by their local society or genealogical organization for their service and dedication. These volunteers are the backbone of their local society, giving their time and expertise, to the organization and the field of genealogy. In the coming months, you will be introduced to each of the 2015 award recipients and learn why they received a 2015 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award.
Today we’re introducing Wanda Burke Alderman of Steptoe, Washington, who was nominated by the Whitman County Genealogical Society (WCGS). She was recognized for her exceptional efforts to preserve important historic images and records in the Whitman County area.
Wanda Burke Alderman
Ms. Alderman has been instrumental in preserving the heritage of Whitman County for Washington State’s Rural Heritage Collection. Working with the Whitman County Library for more than six years, Ms. Alderman has located images, interviewed contributors, documented critical cataloging information, and provided community programs. Thanks in large part to her efforts, the collection now contains more than 3,000 images and is the most popular in Washington State averaging 4,500 site visits per month.
Ms. Alderman has also volunteered for Find a Grave for 14 years, inputting 1,240 grave entries for Bethel Cemetery at Steptoe, and has transcribed records for Washington State Digital Archives and donated time and resources to St. John Historical Society.
Ms. Alderman is a respected and diligent member of the WCGS, and richly deserves being a recipient of a WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award.

Janet Norby: Salem Witch Trials and Their Consequences for our Country. Janet utilizes information about personal ancestors who participated in the trials and searches for an understanding of the cultural influences that
prompted them to do so. With discussion to follow.
Jill Nock and Barb Crossler: DAR presentation includes historical background, info on their chapter, types of service that can be proven, documents needed and places to search. With discussion to follow.
Barbara Bradley Petura: Preserving Genealogical Research & Family History for Future Generations. Barbara will give us ideas and show us internet sites where we will be able to enter our research for others to find and expand on in years to come. With discussion to follow.

Whitman County Gen Society Newsflash
The dedicated-but-small membership of the Whitman County Genealogical Society in Pullman, WA, just went on their annual “picnic.” This is really an annual outing and since I am a member I joined them this time. The group rendezvoused in Pullman early on a Friday morning and drove the 90 minutes southeast to the town of Pomeroy and a great lunch at the being-restored Pataha Flour Mill. Here are Mary, Janet, Marge and Luke at the entrance…. old vintage “stuff” was everywhere! (Monica and Don not shown.)
Mary Simonsen Honored as Outstanding Volunteer in 2014

In the coming weeks, you will be introduced to each of the 2014 award recipients and learn why they received the 2014 WSGS Outstanding Volunteer Award.
Today we’re introducing Mary Bybee Simonsen of Pullman, Washington, who was nominated by the Whitman County Genealogical Society (WCGS). She was recognized for her outstanding efforts in the identification and preservation of historical documents of importance and value to researchers interested in the Whitman County Area.
Mary Simonsen
Since 1997, Ms. Simonsen has spent hundreds of hours volunteering for WCGS projects. She has worked on small projects such as transcribing vital records (birth, death, divorce, marriage), obituaries, and homestead patents as reported in the Pullman Herald and other newspapers. She has also worked on big projects, including transcribing the 1883, 1885, and 1887 Whitman County Territory censuses, and the 1890 Whitman County Veterans census. She also played a major role in the transcription of the 1910 Whitman County census.
Ms. Simonsen also assisted with the transcription of the Whitman County Death Register, and early marriage and probate records. She has indexed various publications not only for the WCGS, but also for the Whitman County Historical Society.
Ms. Simonsen’s dedication to enable the public to access these records demonstrated that she richly deserved this recognition in 2014.

Whitman County Genealogical Society (Pullman, Washington) is hosting a seminar featuring Janet Camarata and Winona Laird from Genealogy Training Center.
Winona will teach us how to access a variety of historical newspapers to see your ancestors as part of a larger community. Newspaper records include announcements, obituaries, anniversaries, legal notices, letters to the editor, social columns filled with personal news of the daily experiences and lives of your family and their neighbors. Winona has been doing genealogy for over 60 years. When she retired she became a Professional Genealogist. She is a member of Association of Professional Genealogists, National Genealogical Society, and Federation of Genealogy Societies. & “Timelines, Chronologies, and Collateral Lines”
Janet will show how to use a variety of methods to better understand the lives of our ancestors. One method is the use of timelines and/or chronologies to summarize a person’s life, demonstrate how lives interconnect, point out problems and areas for further research, and help in writing a memoir, family history or obituary. Janet is currently President of South King County Genealogical Society (SKCGS). She is a seminar presenter and trainer in genealogy societies across Washington and her specialties are Teaching and Lecturing on genealogy.
