Skagit Valley Genealogical Society Monthly Meeting Program:
How Healthy is Your Family Tree?  Physical and Mental Health Issues of Our Ancestors
 

Skagit Valley Genealogical Society (SVGS) presents: How Healthy is Your Family Tree: Physical and Mental Health Issues of Our Ancestors, presented by Janice C. Lovelace, PhD. This program offers an in-depth look at building a health genogram starting with a traditional genealogical pedigree chart. Also covered in the program is a basic overview of DNA, epigenetics and inheritance of health issues. Several health issues are discussed in detail.  This educational program will be held on Saturday, March 11, 1:00-3:00pm, Burlington Senior/Community Center, 1011 Greenleaf Ave., Burlington. Janice Lovelace, Ph.D. recently retired from 30 years of full-time college teaching in social sciences and American Cultural Studies. She has over 20 years of experience in genealogical research and academic work in the area (Genealogy and Family History certificate at University of Washington, Boston University Genealogical Research Certificate, ProGen 18). Her presentations include mental health and genealogy, genetics, ethnic minority research and courthouse research.

Salt Lake City, Utah (20 August 2017), Take advantage of 36 free family history classes and webinars in March 2017 through the world reknowned Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. Attend in person or online. Check out the Denmark, England, Scotland, Sweden, Wales historic record classes, sessions on how to read records in Dutch and Portuguese, as well as sessions in Spanish.
Classes offered online are noted as “Webinars”. Webinar attendees need to click on the link next to the class title to attend the online class on the scheduled date and time. Those attending the Library in-person need to simply go to the room noted. Invite family and friends. All times are in Mountain Standard Time (MST). Amy Mueller Coffman is a 4th-generation owner of Mueller’s Funeral Home in Kennewick and Pasco, Washington. Her B.A. degree from Brigham Young University is in Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations. She has completed her funeral director internship and is preparing to take the State funeral director’s exam to be a licensed funeral director. She will bring a display of local 100-year-old funeral home records and cemetery applications and provide information on many different past funeral customs as well as share what specific information you can find on a funeral home record to help in your own family history research.

Seattle Genealogical Society News

VERDA R. HANSBERRY
August 19, 1919 – February 5, 2017

A life member of the Seattle Genealogical Society, Verda Romayne Hansberry, died on February 5, 2017, in Seattle. Verda, a librarian by profession, worked at the  Seattle Public Library for much of her career.  She worked in the Mobile Outreach Department, headed the the Circulation Department, and ultimately was Deputy City Librarian in charge of the Central Branch, as well as acting City Librarian in 1975. She also was president of the Washington Library Association in the early 1980s and was active on committees of the American Library Association.

Verda was the driving force in publishing three genealogy books about her father’s family, her mother’s family, and her husband’s ancestors. She is survived by her two sons, Russ (Kitty) Hansberry of Keller, Texas, and Doug (Patti) Hansberry of Beaverton, Oregon, and by her daughter, Anne Hansberry of Seattle, Washington.

A celebration of her life took place on February 10th. The family requests any donations in her memory should be made to the Seattle Genealogical Society or the Seattle Public Library Foundation.

“Tracking Down Granddad” at SGS Library

Joyce Lindsey O’Keefe recently wrote a complimentary story about her experience at the SGS Library and the help she received from volunteers, Christine Shomaker and Jean Roth.
