Following the General Meeting, Barbee Buchanan is giving a presentation on the many books that cover the state and counties of Tennessee. Being the 16th state in the Union. Rich in history. More Civil War battles were fought in Tennessee than any other state except Virginia. If your ancestors settled or traveled thru Tennessee, this would be a beneficial presentation.

Set up is simple but is specific to the search engine you use – follow directions carefully. The ZOOM invite information and class materials will be sent to registered participants 1-2 days prior to the meeting.

Find-A-Grave can be an invaluable tool for providing you with information and clues on your ancestors and their extended family. Think you already know Find-A-Grave? Perhaps not as well as you might believe. This class will cover all you need to know about Find-A-Grave from basic to advanced functions as well as how you can use Find-A-Grave to help others in their research.
Covered in the class will be:
Getting Started: Community rules, FAQ, support, other links, tutorials, how it works Basics: Searching memorials, creating an account, editing and linking memorials, messaging vs email Intermediate: Creating memorials, adding photos, requesting photos Advanced: Transferring memorials, merging memorials, cenotaphs, formatting entries, saving to Ancestry or FamilySearch Other: Leaving flowers, sponsoring a memorial, setting up favorite and virtual cemeteries, paying it forward

Heritage Quest Research Library Using FamilySearch Wiki

Joleen Aitchison has been involved in genealogical endeavors since she was a child, and continues the search. She is a member of APG, the Bainbridge Island Genealogical Society, and the consulting genealogist for Traditions of the Ancestors (TOTA). Joleen has presented at various events throughout the US and is a returning speaker for us at HQRL. 

Using FamilySearch Wiki The FamilySearch Wiki is a marvelous resource for genealogists. It contains links to databases and online resources, as well as research training guidance.  There you will also find location specific pages, and more!  We will take an in-depth look at many of the features of the Wiki.  We’ll follow a path from one page to another, and into the World Wide Web to discover how this vast site can make a difference in our research.  Thursday, August 1, 2024

Where do you start if you are tracing ancestry to Mexico? Learn the most helpful record types for Mexican and Mexico Spanish colonial genealogy research and where to find them. This class will also address tips for dealing with the language barrier.

Presenter Moises Garza’s passion for genealogy started in the cotton fields of west Texas. As a migrant worker, he worked in the fields next to his father, Lauro Garza, who had a sharp memory and told countless stories about his own ancestors. Moises has pursued genealogy since 1998, first with his own family and then helping countless others in their own quest to find their ancestors. He has published 60 books on genealogy and he continues with this passion by publishing and creating resources to help clients in their own search.

Debbie Wilson Smyth has been researching her family since 1993 and holds a certificate in the Genealogical Research program from Boston University.  As the owner of Oak Trails Genealogy Services, LLC, she provides professional genealogical services in research, education, consultation, and speaking. Her research focuses on mid-western and southern states, methodology, lineage society applications and DNA. She is a member of APG and the Genealogy Speakers Guild, as well as a number of national, state and local societies.  Timelines: A Genealogical Tool for Organization and Analysis.  Timelines help organize the information that we collect on our ancestors and are beneficial in the analysis process. This presentation describes the use and elements of timelines for genealogical research, including examples created in various formats and for different types of research problems.  When: Thursday, July 11, 2024

Grays Harbor Gen Soc Open Discussion
